Yep. He tore down walls. Heavily ahead of his time.

Agreed.

Besides, Bart hates Prince. You can't take anything he says seriously.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

REM and Metallica...hmmm. It took Prince 5 albums before he was marketed like they were from Day 1.

Name a Black artist who gained control of their Masters. Study the history of Black artists and the apartheid nature of the music biz...racist record labels, radio segregation and ownership. Of course Prince had missteps and strategic errors in battling a huge multinational corporation and anti-artist industry norms. U have been carrying the water for music biz practices for years, but the current state of the industry has proven Prince to be ahead of his time.

What? Circa Murmur and Kill 'Em All?? lol

Metallica had those Megaforce Records bucks bringing in the big PR guns.

Day 1 from their Major Label releases. Research White segregated radio, promotion, tour support, Rolling Stone + Music Press. Prince had to break the color barrier at MTV.

Something to be proud of now?

Who was ashamed of it, before?

It was nothing that Prince was or should have been ashamed.

He should however be embarrassed by the hideous clothing he wore. And all the white makeup that made him look like Liza Minnelli. lol

Tastes can vary.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I always got a huge kick out of all the crazy shit he wore and i think that photo is cool as shit. I dug his sheer audacity and how much balls it took to pull it off.

I'm well aware of America's racist radio segregation, but there's more than one factor at play, such as signing an unknown teenager vs an already proven, established act. You're moving goalposts.

I've already named black artists in charge of their masters.

Some ppl just like to repeat the same thing without listening / reading to what else has been said.

Excellent debating skills.
all I keep seeing is Metallica this, REM that.
REM didnt have a multi platinum album until 1991! They weren't even on warners until 1988. They built up.a profile into 80s on another label.
Better to compare prince with devo or someone who signed around the same time at least.

In short this era was good in raising awareness of artists rights and ownership issues, less good for prince, who had no stable management or PR, so ended up wasting a lot of time and drifting from one deal to the next in later years, robbing his later decades of a consistent thread. I'm sure it was frustrating and painful to not get his masters but most deals when artists get them come after a certain period, not instantly. It's a long game, not a short fight.

Especially now. There is so much awareness now about this kind of thing....this dude gave up a lot to battle.

.

Prince didn't "battle" anything. He whined like a sulky teen and stomped his foot, that's all.

Pure nonsense. As seems so often to be the case with your posts.

Prince could never be as cool or accomplish as much as Bart. I mean let's be real here.

Once guy changed the landscape of music forever and the other posts critical observations on the internet in a rude fashion.

Who's the hero we need...? and the one we deserve?

;

I wonder sometimes what other boards BVH frequents, the things he writes and the tone he takes since he seems to take the internet very seriously. I wonder what he's like in the workplace and what his coworkers think about him. Or his neighbors who may have had the audacity to mow their lawn 3 inches over the property line or have a plant dangling slightly over his fence. How he conducts himself at parties or around a Thanksgiving dinner table. Must be a hoot...real awesome always having someone around to point out your mistakes, correct you on minor errors and bascially just act like they're above everyone else.

I mean, who doesn't love that? BVH seems like he was hatched out of an egg to be a nosey member of an HOA board.

Prince "enslaved" Jill Jones and Margie Cox. And Cox's happened during the same period Prince was whining about Warners. And Cox was actually prevented from releasign anything for YEARS while got let out of his WBR contract without fulfilling its requirements: https://musicfans.stackex...a/2171/129 .

.

Interesting. I didn't know that. Still I had always thought that he was contradicting himself, when he spoke about "the respect for creative ownership". Because he obviously didn't respect the creative ownership of some of the people who contributed to his music. We all know some examples like: The production credits of "Kiss", that should have been "David Z. & Prince". And the writing credits for "Rockhard In A Funky Place" that should have been"Prince & Eric Leeds". [Edited 10/23/20 9:17am]

Prince's 'lapse' was recently mentioned in the Mark Brown thread.
