Day 1 from their Major Label releases. Research White segregated radio, promotion, tour support, Rolling Stone + Music Press. Prince had to break the color barrier at MTV.

He should however be embarrassed by the hideous clothing he wore. And all the white makeup that made him look like Liza Minnelli. [Edited 10/26/20 8:23am] Paisley Park is in your heart

I always got a huge kick out of all the crazy shit he wore and i think that photo is cool as shit. I dug his sheer audacity and how much balls it took to pull it off.

love that outfit. better than the boring parkas and one colour crap he wore during the JOTY/LFOA tours a few years later.

I'm well aware of America's racist radio segregation, but there's more than one factor at play, such as signing an unknown teenager vs an already proven, established act. You're moving goalposts.

I've already named black artists in charge of their masters. Some ppl just like to repeat the same thing without listening / reading to what else has been said.

Excellent debating skills.
all I keep seeing is Metallica this, REM that. REM didnt have a multi platinum album until 1991! They weren't even on warners until 1988. They built up.a profile into 80s on another label. Better to compare prince with devo or someone who signed around the same time at least. In short this era was good in raising awareness of artists rights and ownership issues, less good for prince, who had no stable management or PR, so ended up wasting a lot of time and drifting from one deal to the next in later years, robbing his later decades of a consistent thread. I'm sure it was frustrating and painful to not get his masters but most deals when artists get them come after a certain period, not instantly. It's a long game, not a short fight. Pure nonsense. As seems so often to be the case with your posts.

Prince's 'lapse' was recently mentioned in the Mark Brown thread.
