Prince - "Come" album(1994), appreciation.

Many great tracks in that album! One of my favorite tracks is "Letitgo".

I can talk all day about this album for sure
Great article "ultimate come" on this forum by sci-fi
I often read it again...

It would be hard for me to choose between this era and SOTT era..
So I don't, both my faves

"Come" is one of my fav Prince albums from the ninties. It has a very chill late-night vibe to it and unlike many of his albums from the mid-to-late ninities, it doesn't overstay its welcome

Space for example, is the absolute perfect song to be jamming out to on a chilly night while crusing down an empty freeway

I have some of my dearest Prince memories from this album... it came out just before I headed out to study in a foreign country (AKA just before adulthood and the best years of my life) and it just happened to come out while I was in Athens for a month, I just saw it in a record store (no idea what it was, I was actually surprised TMBGITW wasn't on it but no problem because I also got the "Beautiful Experience" tape), bought the tape and I vividly remember myself being amazed by its versatility while walking on the streets listening to it over and over with my cassette headphones (remember those? lol).

Personal memories aside, this has to be the most underrated Prince album ever. To me, it is just as good as his 80s albums and better than anything he did in the '90s (albeit a bit short). Why people do not adore it is beyond me.

I would hope for a deluxe version of this but I know it ain't happening

Since I am also a lyric fanstic, I will review some lyrics/verses from the "Come" album. Maybe that can entice the Non-Prince-Fans and the Loyal-Prince-Fans to purchase this album(if they did not in 1994).

"Space":

"T-minus 60 sec and counting arm light on.....

I painted your face upon my ceiling, I stare
at it all the time, I imagine myself inside
your bedroom, oh, I imagine myself in your sky
(You)you are the reason there's bass in my boom,
(oh, you)are the reason I'm high...

....If you and I were just 10ft closer then I'd
make you understand that everything I wanna
do to your body, baby, I would do to your
hand"...

Continued....."Space".....

Then you'd be hip to the deep rush, deeper than the boom of the bass,

With every other flick of the Pink Plush, the closer we get to the space....

Where the souls go, where the love grows.....

I had dreams of us cuddling/fucking on the planet/Mars, then when I wake up I'm
all covered in sex,

Don't look at me, baby or I'll flex....

(The Space)Go
(The Space)Flow
(The Space)Grow".....

I think it´s a great album even though it does feel a bit weird because there are so many great songs on it but I don´t see any potential big hits.

Many fans prefer the other versions of the title song Come but I prefer the album version even though the sucking sounds are really annoying and ridiculous, especially if you play the song in front of other people, especially non-fans, but that´s just my opinion.

Space is definitely my favorite song on this album and it´s cool that he released the maxi single with all those different version, of which the Universal Love Mix is my favorite. I wish he had included the rock version, too. The rock version was mentioned here by none other than Michael Bland and I´d love to hear it one day, maybe if they decide to release a deluxe edition one day but I doubt that this album will ever see a deluxe release.

Papa is a great song, it sounds very personal and I like the ending which is a bit reminiscent of the Beatles and Lenny Kravitz.

I could´ve done without the moans and whispers in between songs and the sucking sounds that I mentioned but all in all it is a good album even though Prince seemed to dislike it at the time.

One more thing...I´ve said this before and I´ll say it again...the song Strays of the World should´ve stayed on this album, it would´ve been the perfect closer, especially with that "Come" slogan at the end of the song. It feels as if there´s something missing without Strays of the World closing the album. It would have made the concept of Come a bit more cohesive and would´ve fit in perfectly due to its lyrics and would´ve been a nice addition to all those other rather unusual sounding songs on the album such as Solo and Papa, especially with the lyrics about loneliness and hope and that "Come!" at the end of the song.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

He was making those sounds because he was relaying a messege to one or more teenage girls(obviously!). It sounded like he never had sex with a "Virgin". eek

One of my favourite Prince albums and though underrated by the general public, is beloved by many fans.

The original 1993 configuration with different production and tracklist does intrigue me though. I suspect that would've been truly excellent if released in '93 as intended. It's definitely a project I'd like to see released to hardcore fans.

I love this album, especially the first four tracks. I also like the Letitgo maxi-single. The QDIII remix samples TBODP.

I've always liked this classy album, could do without "solo" and "orgasm" though...by the way "Space" maxi single is brilliant too.
We're here, might as well get into it.

Favorite Prince album of the 90s. It's focused and had a definitive theme.

Those are cool! I like Romantic songs(more). I will Eventually comment about those songs(Capricorn and Taurus tend to move slower than the other Zodiac signs).

this album is a better ep than album.

the real keepers are:

pheremone, space, papa, dark, solo, orgasm

come, its fine, but its too long and padded out, and i wonder if the shorter version would have been better.

let it go, i like it but its a bit plodding, and sounds like something he just recorded as he needed a single.

race - corny AF

loose - terrible

Great description, altohough I should have added What's My Name, Interactive and Endrophinemachine.

Why do you regard Race as corny?

a lot of princes songs where hes deliberately trying to say something 'deep' are corny.

doesnt mean i dont like the sentiment and message.

but the way it is conveyed is corny.

i.e. it is not a good song.

also interesting that here he sings "She'd be a much-better-off-left fool (Face the music)
If we never heard about the evils that those before us committed" considering what he would later write.

The better question is why is Loose a terrible song?? Most likely it's that they don't like Prince's rock side
