CAL3

The Hits version. That sax solo is boss.
I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

if we're adding covers (like the awfully tonedeaf version from Sinead about her mother), FDeluxe did a pretty good version

Great!
Didn't know that one!
Thank you!

Sinead's is my favorite, blasphemous as that may sound! Then the version on Originals.

The Family version is decent, but falls well behind both of the above.

The live version on The Hits/The B-Sides is by far my least favorite - it doesn't do much for me at all.

Why would you say it's balphemous?

Its the version people know.

Its the reason Prince put his version on the hits album.

I never realized how much that song's been covered.

I like Prince's inflections the best so Rosie & Prince for number 1

The Family for number 2 because it's the first time I've ever heard the song and it still holds special to me.

Sinead did catapult it so number 3

Honorable mentions Nikka Costa, All Angels and Aretha.

Leaving with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra version

Chris Cornell also did a version, which was even worse than his cover of Billie Jean.

I suppose it could be considered blasphemous on a Prince fan site, particularly given the animosity between Prince and Sinead that becomes a story every so often.

Sinead. I like the other versions too but it's the best. I'm not sure if the video influenced my opinion- i can't unsee it but I think her version best captures the wistful emotion of the lyrics.

It's really the reason we even have threads like this with 3+ pages...

Sinead never releases her version and suddenly these threads take-off like if someone made a "Ooo She She Wa Wa" thread... Even "101" got mostly crickets around here until the Prince vocal surfaced.

.

Liking Sinead's version is, to me, not blasphemous, however, her version is. She changes the lyrics and meaning of it entirely. First, she changes the number of days since the love is taken away. Worse, to me, is that she sings the song to her mother. It changes the song from a song about a lover that means a lot to you, it becomes about family. The rest of the lyrics just don't work anymore. It becomes a very uncomfortable incestuous song.

.

if someone made a "Ooo She She Wa Wa" thread...

.

I'd love an Oo She She Wa Wa thread... the entire side 2 of the Apollonia 6 album is one of the best Prince has ever released. (and very underrated) And OSSWW is the Make Up of the A6 album. Make Up was a marvel on the Originals album (the mix not withstanding). Having a Prince vocal of OSSWW would be great. Imagine him singing "I got a shape like a bottle of Coca, Coca-Cola"!
