Is Prince more interested in progressing himself...

...than he is with pushing the envelope on his music? Is this really one and the same thing? Has it ever been? Will it forever continue to be?

He said himself he has already pushed as far as need be and that his only ompetition is himself. Now he is interested in his own progfress perosnally which he has always been concerend with though. I think he just feels he doesn't have anything left to prove (which he doesn't) although I think he is lying to himself. because when there is a challenge (a slap in the face) there he is, gettin all inspired to wreck a house etc.

Are you saying that Prince's religious path is a fortunate one? Or are you referring to financial goals through music? Or both or something else? Please explain.

I'm just glad he's back to being an artist. biggrin

I think a lot of people worry far too much about pushing envelopes and not enough about what's stuffed inside. wink

Prince could write something on par with Shakespeare and some would complain that it's been done before rather than marveling at its virtues.

Duke Ellington had to put up with similar criticism after his astonishing, changing-all-the-rules first decade. All he did was continue to write jazz standards until well into his 60s. And now people are just enjoying the great depth and breadth of his music from all eras, not just the stuff that was deemed "cutting edge" for its time.

Quality is what makes music last and be heard by future generations.

In short, If Prince should start to push that envelope again with his sound that'll just be the big cherry on top of the sundae that I'm already enjoying. biggrin

spcadck

Purple Rain was princes most succesful/commercial work.
The ULTIMATE![for me atleast] would be for him 2 smash that with something totally AnotherWorldly/futuristic heavy guitar[not gospel/preachy] Taking the whole industry by storm and introducing a new generation to his genius.
The cherryOnTop would be the fact that MJackson has run his course. For those of U to yung 2 remember, even though PurpleRain was a commercial success MJ mania always loomed like a 1000lb Gorrilla.-
Silence the critics-show the world. PlzzzZZZ!!!

Somewhat. He still has things to do musically & he's still breaking ground IMO, quiet as it's kept. The music & it's progression was his driving force @ one time, but he's covered so much ground the viewpoint had to shift at some point - how many years has it been? smile It's still important to him but it's not the be all end all. I think he's more concerned w/ being happy than pushing the envelope, which he's already done a lot of.

Is this really one and the same thing? Has it ever been? Will it forever continue to be?

No, no & no... The two coincide (i.e. while growing musically, of course he grew as a person & vice versa, every experience we have lends wider perspective to who we are & what we do) but they aren't the same thing IMO...
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart
