Parade / SOTT

Just finished listening to all the vault tracks and so many of them have nothing to do with SOTT album. Quite a few of them were even recorded in ‘85.

It’s great that we’re getting to hear this stuff, although I can’t help but feel disappointed that a large number of these tracks sound like they could have been on Parade Deluxe.

I’ve read Michael Howe’s explanation, but to me it isn’t good enough. The Dream Factory was a Prince and The Revolution album and should have been kept separate from this project.

I think he either lacks knowledge, is not doing his homework properly or just doesn’t really care that much and let’s his personal preference take precedence.

Ultimately, I don’t think it’s good letting one person have such authority and control over an archive like this. Thus far, compilations for vault material on both 1999 SDE and this one have been messy to say the least.

Sounds like they could have been? Or were part of Parade sessions?

One is your opinion, the other is known.

Spoiler alert: Many Dream Factory/CB/SOTT songs were first recorded in 1985. Hold onto your wigs!

Okay, so you’re telling me that they were all part of sessions for SOTT? Are you telling me tracks with Lisa and Wendy on backing vocals would have been earmarked for SOTT?

Disrespectful? You just got 3 CDs of unreleased material in stellar quality, yet you have the nerve to complain that some of these songs do not belong here.

Guess for some people it's really hard to understand that Sign O' The Times evolved from 3 different projects: Dream Factory, Camille, Crystal Ball. And look at that, to give you the full experience, the aborted tracks from all these projects were included here and given to you.

All My Dreams was recorded during the Parade sessions? So what? It makes more sense here as it was part of the Dream Factory tracklist.

What's so bloody difficult to understand??

I refer to this in my post and mention that some of Dream Factory stuff doesn’t sound right on this deluxe.

Well just for the fact that Strange Relationship was reworked by W&L and then Prince reworked it into solo Prince, justifies a lot of these choices

Think about it, he probably split the track into 2 piles:
1) 85/86 tracks that could fit into SOTT SDE
2) 85/86 tracks that would more appropriately fit into a Parade SDE

You know Wendy and Lisa are on SOTT, right? As in their backing vocals are heard on two songs with Susannah on just as many others?

That the Revolution appeared on all 3 albums mentioned? That SOTT is the progeny of Dream Factory that way?? That Parade was largely completed in early 1985 but not before the song Dream Factory was recorded??? What in the world.

You'll never get a set you'd be happy with if you think in terms of sessions. Prince didn't record that way.

The fact is, between the release of Parade and release of SOTT, Prince toyed 3 major projects. This set tries to reflect that. The Revolution were still in place for the majority of that time period.

Thank you. I get people having their own configurations...but to start saying Parade is being disrespected...smh

Not knocking the release which I'm loving but in fairness as All My Dreams was on the first config of Parade it should have been held over for the reissue of that.

Here's the deal: A lot of us think of Prince's eras/albums as the year they were released. This is a mistake. Without a doubt the Sign O' The Times showcases a brilliant, yet transitional, period for Prince. Yes, a lot of W&L collab material was always going to be on, what eventually became, Sign O' The Times.

-

Correct me if I am wrong, but none of the material on this Super Deluxe was going to be on Parade as the movie/album had already been saved/earmarked for Dream Factory, etc.

Anything included on a DF config was ok I guess, even if from earlier. Anyway what are we talking about? 3 Parade Era songs? The only real oddity here is ICNTTPOYM, particularly since they didn't keep BG and CSTFIG off 1999SDE and saved them for a GBSDE. But honestly, are we now going to blame them for including material? This is OK with me.

All true.
On a side note, I don't think DF would have been to different from SOTT even if the Revolution had not been disbanded. The July 86 configuration wasn't meant to be final and with another 8 months or so before release, we'd probably have lost the same songs along the way give or take.

Yup, plus the tracks are all on the path that led eventually to SoTT so it’s right (even important) to include them.

Yeah but then you have the people who argue for the original intentions around a song even if those intentions had subsequently changed.

However, I'm under the impression that the Parade version had Clare's strings so that could warrant a reappearance on Parade sde.

Edit: forgot, of course it would warrant a reappearance because it segues from Old Friends 4 Sale etc.

to me the only track that really maybe should have been kept off of SOTT SD was "All My Dreams"

There are not a whole lot of songs that are (to me) iconic and were leaked left over for a Parade SD ("come electra tuesday" "others here with us" and "Old Friends 4 Sale") But I susspect there are more than enought I do not know of to fill 2 or 3 cds as well as concerts and soundboards...

other songs either that I have heard and are less a priority or that I have not heard...

A Coule of Miles, Little Girl Wendy's Parade, most strongest whisky,

and some of his vocals of song for Jill and Shelia and others...
