1. "Crazy You"
There's some good logic in her covering one of his early songs from one of the first two albums. "With You," "Crazy," something like that I can totally hear her singing. In a Joni way, I can hear her doing "America." Not like she's not been political in her career.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

So you're telling me none of you could hear Joni singing "Vagina"? You have dishonest hearts. |

Did Joni accept songs from anyone? She was a master songwriter; very few were in her league.

Wally. Joni is great with that kind of spoken-sung rambling style song. |

as a longtime Joni Mitchell fan, with her vocal range and singing style, i think these songs wouldve been a pefect album of songs to cover
That's a fantastic, impressive list of cover picks. Much admiration!

The Ballad of Dorothy Parker. That would have been a great mind fuck.
Love it! Do you have a vote for Prince song(s) for Joni to consider embedding?
I do realize that even if that worked out as a good idea, would depend on the nature of the Joni song.

There's a lot of Joni music I haven't heard. From my limited sense am wondering about parts of Deliverance, e.g.

Power Fantastic? Since he wasn't releasing it himself.
.
I'll never understand what he was going for offering her Emotional Pump - was this one of his cocky, "let's see if you can hang in my world" kind of gestures? Can't figure it any other way. But then again, Can I Play With U is also very lacklustre, so maybe his radar was just off during that period with offering songs to his musical heroes. |

Good question. How about some songs/recordings?
Would you count Chaka Khan's cover of I Feel for You? That cover situation might not qualify as "working with" in the way you mean it. Of course, Chaka Khan worked with Prince, loved Prince, and loved I Feel for You. As I understand it, there was a plan (before scheduling problems interfered) for Prince to play guitar on that cover.
Then there's the time Prince popped in to do synthesizers for Stevie Nicks on "Stand Back."
What do you think?

Reflection
After first heard Reflection, I pictured Prince playing it for Joni Mitchell.
Just my little daydream, but there's the tiniest chance it happened. Who knows?

Contrary to all others, I think it was a cool idea to offer Joni Mitchell Emotional Pump.
It would have been funny, and that's what Prince's music was very often about (remember the Chris Rock interview, where he complained about the lack of humour in current pop music?)
He gave a song like Jaguar to Mavis Staples, a gospel singer.
I got to know Mavis as a Paisley Park artist.
If I had known her before, I might have thought;
"What?! He makes her sing on that track?! Oh, it fits! Ha, ha!"
And I'm just glad he did it! [Edited 10/2/20 10:49am]

What you say brings up a question. Didn't Joni express that she felt a little boxed in and limited by industry music categories and image-making?
As said before, I don't know very much about Joni Mitchell, but lots of people here do. Maybe someone has thoughts on that.
Anyway, especially if there is some truth to this idea, then going somewhere outside the box sounds like a fine thing to suggest to her. Given the way she reacted, she might go for a different way out of that box. But I agree that it wasn't necessarily a bad idea to float.
BTW, also thought of Mavis Staples sharing her reaction to some of P's out of the box song ideas.

Since she apparently didn't recognize the song when P played it for her, that would be ultimate.

Of course he was.

What kinda question is that. Most of his heroes were dead or infirm or retired by the time he came up. [Edited 10/2/20 15:14pm] |

The two of them could bring in a few other musical greats and form a circle (game) to continue passing songs around. Like a game of musical telephone. |
