Interview about SOTT SDE with Duane Tudahl

Just started, but I hope it proves interesting regarding more technical and recording details and the compiling of the set, but I'm ready to be heartbroken

More talk of how SOTT should have been a Prince and the Revolution album, or at least a Prince, Wendy & Lisa album. confused

i don't trust anyone who officially works for the prince estate, but i would like my faith in duane to remain rock solid because i respect his work. don't let me down.

it was fine. i'm not the audience for this so of course it was kind of fluff to me. i got all excited cause i want so desperately for the parade/sott book to come out with all those recording dates and detailed info.

people will be upset with the w+l talk though

i truly can't understand it and even i think all the bitching here is tiresome and caustic. if we're being generous, there are 3 songs on the entire double album that have involvement from them. this is more of a Prince and Eric Leeds album than it is a Prince and Wendy and Lisa album

I like Strive's posts but he thinks I'm racist against white people. You knew that already though.

Anyway, you say the talk is caustic but then say it should be a Prince and Eric album. It's not detractors bringing up W&L out of nowhere, lol. It's W&L being thrust into the spotlight as a placeholder for Prince. I know. He's gone and they were there so who else do you talk to? The thing is, there's plenty people. And 5 episodes of How Prince Shot Himself In the Foot By Firing Mediocre Composers is not my idea of a tribute to one of his best works.

i don't know. i just feel like being totally on the "this is bullshit" side lacks nuance and understanding about the creative process, but on the other hand is so abundantly clear the wendy and lisa aspect is getting played up majorly by the estate and i just can't really figure out why, what do they have to gain from it? or is it them just taking all these prince associates at their word and not thinking about it further. i guess they can't tell the people promoting these releases for them to shut up.

the thing that bothers me the most is that there are a really decent handful of song examples where you can point towards a meaningful collaboration and creative output between wendy, lisa, and prince but for some reason they keep harping on SOTT as if the finished album has anything to do with them at all. i guess just because it's the hot product being promoted right now? there's a way to be objective about it and celebrate the art, both w&l's + prince's, but they're leaning so hard into the other end of things that it's almost to the point of parody

Where is this happening? What are people even reacting to?

A lot of the Deluxe unreleased material features them, and it features songs from an unreleased Revolution record, so even if SOTT isn't a Revolution record, what's the problem with talking about what's in the boxset? I mean, it's the final Revolution material, why wouldn't they try to talk it up? If anything they've obscured that and it could have got it's own release to really make head's explode.

The Revolution are still alive, they're hear to talk about it and the Estate didn't really consult with them on past releases until they approached them. So now the Estate are trying to take advantage and find things to talk about about each box set.

I mean, what's the argument? If someone doesn't care for W&L specifically they're apparently easy to avoid...I haven't seen them doing any press for the box set, and they don't mention it on their Twitter unless it's buried. People are upset their names are coming up? Same people get upset when a laundry list of names come up, and their reasoning is typically suspect no matter how they try and invent a reason.

This. Exactly all of this. They are wonderful musicians and composers and put a lot of their own spins on a lot of stuff during them few years but when discussing and talking about the finished product they’re simply not on it. That’s the problem. Like bringing up dream factory constantly all the while ignoring Camille and crystal ball is ridiculous

The dream factory material ain’t even all that. The 2nd and 3rd alleged configurations are all over the place. It’s messy and the songs are mostly just ok if you’re into whimsical pop music

I am into whimsical pop music and the songs are way more than "just ok,"

Agree it's messy and all over the place though, none of the configurations make complete sense to me, and neither does Crystal Ball. Camille works though imho.
