what should be on the last prince and the revolution album?

tbh i love a lot of songs from dream factory, but the main issue i have with it as an album is that it doesnt quite hang together, esp once prince adds a lot of the songs that would become crystal ball or SOTT. i wonder if this is partly the reason he was never quite done with it, and it ended up getting changed a lot and then becoming crystal ball (which i think would have been a cool big blowout of an album if he released it). IMO, for it to be a true revolution album, a real successor to parade, it needs to do away with a lot of the one man band-type songs. so mine would go something like this -

Visions

Dream Factory

Wonderful Day

Eggplant (duet version)

In a Large Room With No Light

Splash

Empty Room (1985 version)

Witness for the Prosecution

Wonderful Ass

Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden

Teacher, Teacher

Strange Relationship (dream factory version)

Colors

Power Fantastic

A Place In Heaven (lisa vocal)

All My Dreams

I mean, with SOTT Super Deluxe Huge Dick Energy Edition releasing so soon, our Dream Factory fantasies don't really matter anymore. It'll essentially be officially released.

This is true. We'll have CB, DF, and Camille. Make a playlist, live the fantasy.

From the material we know about, it's not a very strong album. It could be what Prince considered "esoteric". I'm hoping there's more but I guess that's not really an option for a "last" Revolution related album.

Has anyone here heard of other material that's unknown?

I wouldnt say strongest but def great, different to what came before and his most collaborative. It's a diff side of him. More whimsical, playful, more art pop, kind of airier.

Wait, how? I think it's more likely we're both just expressing extreme views on this one, but Witness for the Prosecution is the only song that could stand up alongside his strongest songs.

To be clear we're talking about OP's list as a standalone album, not an extended SOTT/Crystal Ball, etc.

That doesn't really look right to me. The three Prince and the Revolution albums were roughly half Prince solo tracks and half band efforts, so I don't see why a fourth album would focus so much on collaborative material and songs with others out front. The Dream Factory tracklist on Princevault would be much stronger than the list posted above and more similar to the other Prince and the Revolution albums.

Because that's the direction the band was going before he sent it down the tubes. I mean, he's letting band members sing lead vocals on his record.

That's just, like, your opinion man.

I don't know what the tracklisting is to this proposed final album is but even taking what the OP listed, i'd put half of those songs amongst his best work.

I'll say this, Parade is my favourite Prince album but it's not necessarily his best album, it's not the album that defines him nor is it the one that i'd give to someone to get them into Prince. I love it because you can hear him really stretching himself and what he's capable of; it's way outside his comfort zone and although it might not always work, the final product isn't only what i'm interested in. The 1985/86 outtakes continue this imho; the final, completed SOTT less so.

So yeah, I guess what i'm saying is I reject the idea that he has "strongest" songs in any measurable way. You can point to his hits and go "this was a hit so people liked it" but everything else, it's all up in the air.

On another day I might point to the outtakes from Purple Rain and say they're amongst his strongest since they are just an overflow of him doing the stuff he was really good at.

guys, this is just my tracklisting based on the songs available ofc, its not definitive, and it couldnt be, as i am just a fan trying to construct a 'lost album', a bit like the hendrix estate did with the album he was working on when he died (as prince never seemed happy with the DF tracklisting, i think it doesnt matter to play around with it, thought ive tried to stick to some of his sequencing). i think it would be an album that makes sense most if you think of it as a double album with two records. i changed it a bit as i thought visions going into DF is a bit jarring, and its more exciting just to start right off with DF. visions segues better into large room with no light (ive obv given this far too much thought lol).

I would like to see certain albums released as Prince planned like the Camille Project, the Dawn, (Purple Rain soundtrack with all the songs in the movie as they were featured) and those that were to be ie Wednesday. I would like a Dream Factory set with the 3 configurations, and what was to be Roadhouse Garden.

That would likely be so expensive I dont see it happening. But camille might be easier and cheaper to produce as it's just one disc.

Obviously we're just sharing opinions, I'm just having trouble figuring which group of songs would match something like Mountains, or Girls and Boys, or Sometimes it Snows on Parade let alone anything on PR?

Witness is the only track I think is in the discussion, but it doesn't really fit with the rest of that track list either.

youre 100% right, it has no 'hits'. or big stand out songs.

but i dont think that was going to happen on this album. not sure wendy and lisa are those kinds of writers. doesnt mean these songs arent good though.

witness fits as it features w/l/s along with prince.

It's crazy, but I could see that tracklist I posted being released in '89 if "Batman" didn't happen. What a way to end the 80s...right?

If released like this in '89, maybe "Crystal Ball" would be more looked at as the true masterpiece it is..as well as "All My Dreams". I could see "Train" & "When The Dawn Of The Morning Comes" being the singles as well as "Power Fantastic" becoming a classic on R&B radio.
