why didn't prince experiment more with Latin music?

He did a tiny bit on damned I do I guess, and he let sheila play timbales but it seems odd that he worked with sheila, a great percussionist, and a musician who knows Latin American music, for all those years but rarely put it to much use.

Not saying he should have done a whole album, but seeing as he supposedly liked salsa clubs, its surprising that he didn't explore this more.

Theres also mayte. Shes Puerto Rican IIRC, but he decides to make her an Egyptian princess and wants to change her name to suit the identity hes decided for her lol (fwiw I've no idea if mayte has any love for Latin American music so maybe she had nothing to bring in this regard)

Then also Santana, one of his key guitar heroes. I know prince covered some of his songs at live shows but youd think that might have made him incorporate some latin music over the years.

but hey, maybe he just wasnt that interested, felt it wasnt his ballpark or one he could or should contribute to much.

He didn't change her name? She was born Mayte Garcia, she's listed as such in all releases.

Let's not forget 'Sleep Around' or the first half of 'Digital Garden'.

On the other hand, let's completely forget '1999 - The New Master'...

Forgot Te Amo..
Actually Get On The Boat is on 3121 as well & that's got a Latin vibe.

Prince didn't experiment with Latin music more because, like jazz, he wasn't any good at it.

The answer is simple Latin music is very complex and it needs a lot of practice to be able to play styles like bachata cumbria cuban jazz ...

Probably because apart from Sheila E, he just didn't know a lot of Latin musicians.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

How can you listen to the first two Madhouse albums and say that Prince wasn't good at jazz?

He did. While he never made a purely Latin album, he blended elements in with his 2000s work. 3121 is full of Latin touches in particular. The 2000s were all about Latin music.

Maybe it's simpler than what you have in mind, but how about Noon Rendezvous?

Madhouse is a great funky album with jazz overtones but that is not jazz. You ask a question and if you dont mind i will say :If you listen to Headhunters or Mahavishnu Orchestra or Return To Forever than how can you even think that Prince played jazz?

Didn't he though? Other than Gloria Estefan, I can't think of many big artists who experimented with Latin music more than he did. Part of it is, he's not Latin. Putting the timbales front and center and giving solos was pretty experimental

It's reported he jammed several times with Grupo Fantasma around 2006-2007 - Can't get any more latin than that.

Agreed. Madhouse isn't jazz. It certainly had elements of that in it, but it was still a jam band pop-ish album.

Also interesting considering he stated Santana was more of a influence than Jimi that was everyone automatically grouped him with

Santana was a guitar influence and what Santana played was classic rock riffs while the backing band was providing latin groove.
