honestly Little Red Corvette. Prince has lots of great ballads, great sexy ballads and in my opinion this is not one of them.
The whole premise of the song is deeply depressing; the narrator talking themselves into reluctantly having sex with someone who makes them feel "a little ill" and inadequate. The final justification is that it is "Saturday night, I guess that makes it alright. What have I got to lose."
I will acknowlege that Prince sells it better than anyone else could, the delivery of the vocals, the whole build up to orgasm thing.
It is a document of the cheapest, crappiest sexual experience of someone with no self respect with someone who kind of disgusts them. In that sense it is a brave narrative to explore and is (unfortunately) relatable to a lot of people, but there is nothing joyful about that at all at any level. |

LOL well said, it's always been such an odd song lyrically.
I just think of it as another rock and roll car song with a beautiful keyboard sound and chord sequence and a great guitar solo. |

I've tried many times to love them but they just don't click for me. Housequake gets another chance on Friday though!

YES, it is. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Now that you put it under that light you're right, what a depressing song. |

Especially the 12 inch version. Without that 1st top ten hit, 1999 album would've been in trouble sales wise. It also lead to him doing the PR movie. It's a true classic. You're joking, right? The Black Album and Batman. Both are uninspired pro-forma albums that lack both cohesion and direction. Both albums have a totally unearned reputation for being dark and funky, which seems to be solely based on the album art. |

Wally, Most of Batman, Electric Intercourse, Gold. Days of wild.
I rarely can get through 17 Days even if my life depended on it, but other times I love it.
And....brace yourselves.....America. Ballad of Dorothy Parker.

you are completely right Rusty1 on so many levels and so am I It was Prince's first top 10 hit and introduced him to millions, the 12" version with the different drum pattern is better, and it still makes me throw up a little in my mouth every time I hear it
I think it must be a "1982 thing" Every Breath you take also came out that year; biggest earning song ever according to Wikipedia, was a massive hit, and the lyrics are all about a stalker and are as creepy as f$&k . |

Gett Off - Although I could of picked any song from this era. It was Prince going commercial. Diamonds & Pearls (the song) was even worse, but Gett Off was the bigger hit, and probably deemed a classic by more people.
It was the opposite in the states. "Gett Off" stalled early on the U.S. chart missing the top 20 while "Cream" and "Diamonds and Pearls" were huge hits.

Side note: I knew of many people who thought that Erotic City was on Purple Rain. Not as a B-side, but as an actual album song and single. It got that much airplay in our area back then (Detroit).
For the most part though, I can't think of anything considered a classic that isn't. Maybe NC2U until the recent Prince-studio-version came out. The live duet on Hits wasn't really all that great. |

I did not read the topic. I thought it was songs that should be classics that are not. The above list would be absolute blasphemy so I retract it. Here are the songs that I think are overrated by fans:
Delirious
Baby I'm a Star
Kiss
Mountains
Christopher Tracy's Parade
Lovesexy
Scandalous
Cream
319
Rave

I can see why “Sometimes it snows in April“ is loved, but I don’t like it. I don’t like the way he’s singing in the song especially around the chorus, and I don’t like the feel of it in general. I don’t mind bleak songs in general, but not that one. [Edited 9/23/20 15:30pm]
