What Prince song do real fans consider a classic that you just don't see?

Empty Room comes to mind - I like it but I never understood the status that itseems to have among real Prince fans.

Electric Intercourse may be in there as well

eek Wally is amazing and can't wait to hear it clean.

Dirty Mind is....well...Dirty Mind......30 mins of Prince becoming PRINCE. This is the origin issue.

Madhouse 8 is great. Didnt care for 16

and the Black Album is overrated true.

Yeah I love “Adore” it was my wedding song, but have always preferred the guitar version of “Crucial” to it hands down.

Here are some songs that seem to be much more highly regarded by the fanbase than by me. I'm not going to claim those fans are wrong, but merely that I don't share the same sense of enjoyment and awe.

"Around the World in a Day": this one is slightly jarring to me - never been a fan.

"Good Love": I should enjoy this, but for some reason it grates me.

"Adore": I like this, but there are dozens of RnB slow jams he has done which I prefer.

"If I Was Your Girlfriend": I like this a fair bit, actually, but it's not the end-all, be-all of Prince for me. It probably wouldn't make my top 300 Prince songs.

"All My Dreams": This has a nice groove to it, and I like the concept of Prince doing an old 30s/40s style Hollywood showstopper, but there are some parts that I find offputting, such as the "all my dreams, all my dreams" harmonies. headache

"In a Large Room With No Light": It seems we had this at the wrong speed, so maybe at the correct speed, it will resonate with me more. But it doesn't make my heart sing like it seems to others.

"Diamonds and Pearls": I've never been big on Rosie Gaines, and this just sounds too much like a Disney ballad for me to get fully behind.

"Money Don't Matter 2 Night": There's a nasal tone to the vocals that prevents me from enjoying this.

"Letitgo" and "Space": my two least favorites from Come outside of "Orgasm".

"Call My Name": See "Adore", but even moreso.

"Guitar": Actually fairly tame for a song about guitars knowing what Prince can do, and the vocals adopt a tone in which Prince lets his pitch drop at the end of each phrase in a way that drives me nuts. lol

Didn't the org vote this as the best Prince song ever in your last poll?

My choice would be the entire The Truth album if that's considered a classic by now. I've listened to it many times and it still won't resonate with me. I find every single Prince project more pleasing--all the instrumental albums, internet-only releases, and even Kamasutra I'd rank higher than The Truth.

^^^^ THIS
It doesn't even sound musical to me (much like that old A Christmas Song about chestnuts on an open fire). Just kinda wanders.

BUT, whoever said "Empty Room" isn't a classic hasn't absorbed all the live performances of it. Each very different and emotional, particularly Montreux 2009.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Indeed, "If I Was Your Girlfriend" was crowned the most beloved Prince song in that poll! I'm thinking of doing a new one once SOTT Deluxe has been released - we'll see how things may have changed since then.

As for The Truth, I'm kind of with you. Acoustic guitar has never been my thing, and while I enjoy some of the songs, it's certainly not an album I return to very often. I don't think it's highly regarded enough to be deemed a classic, though. It came in 29th in the album poll I ran among Prince studio albums.

Well, that's the point of this thread, isn't it? To share our "wrong" opinions? I could say the same about you not getting The Gold Experience or not liking "Days of Wild". We all have our own tastes.

I'll triple-down on the Gold Experience/"Days of Wild". That whole overblown/overproduced 90s sound he was into for a bit... Exodus as well, that albums got a following I just don't understand...

Purple Rain. Can't stand the song and unfortunately is seen as his greatest achievements. It was always the time to get a drink or go to the toilet during concerts. It's similar to hearing Mike Hampton murdering Maggot Brain om P-Funk shows.

Dirty Mind and The Black Albums are classics, and definitely not overrated, although maybe you had to be there, at the time.

.

I totally agree about Empty Room though.

TGE album. It's a good album, but it's not Purple Rain or as good as 1999,Dirty Mind, Parade, or SOTT (all are better IMO.).

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Gett Off - Although I could of picked any song from this era. It was Prince going commercial. Diamonds & Pearls (the song) was even worse, but Gett Off was the bigger hit, and probably deemed a classic by more people.

Dirty Mind - I do like the album but I find the title song the most ordinary song on the record.
