'slave': how influenced was prince by nine inch nails?

Listening to their broken ep/album which prince supposedly liked a lot and wondering if prince liked the song happiness in slavery, written about trent Reznors issues with his then label.at the time, tvt. Maybe it influenced his writing slave on his cheek and his attitude towards labels....

https://genius.com/Nine-i...ery-lyrics

[Verse 1]
(Slave screams) He thinks he knows what he wants
(Slave screams) Thinks he has something to say
(Slave screams) He hears but doesn't want to listen
(Slave screams) He's being beat into submission

[Chorus 1]
Don't open your eyes you won't like what you see
The devils of truth steal the souls of the free
Don't open your eyes, take it from me
I have found
You can find
Happiness in slavery
Happiness in slavery

[Verse 2]
(Slave screams) He spends his life learning conformity
(Slave screams) He claims he has his own identity
(Slave screams) He's going to cause the system to fall
(Slave screams) But he's glad to be chained to that wall

[Chorus 2]
Don't open your eyes you won't like what you see
The blind have been blessed with security
Don't open your eyes, take it from me
I have found
You can find
Happiness in slavery
Happiness in slavery
Happiness in slavery
Happiness in slavery
Happiness

For sure.

I pointed out in my Twitter megathread about "Pheromone" that I felt a strong NIN influence, and "Happiness In Slavery" was the song I pointed to.

As for lyrics that can be interpreted in at least 2 different ways, one of them being a BDSM-related interpretation: I don't think Prince needed NIN's influence, he's been writing them way before Reznor.
.
Regarding the music though, I always felt 'Loose' has been influenced by NIN.

Personally I don't think Happiness In Slavery inspired Prince's slave talk but there are alot of influences between the two.

The Loose video seems inspired by the Broken Movie (more specifically the Wish video)

Had U from Chaos And Disorder was very much like Eraser from The Downward Spiral.

Even Beginning Endlessly seems like it has a part inspired by Zero Sum from Year Zero.

I read P used to drive around with "Pretty Hate Machine" cranked in his car.

ForceofNature

Early NIN, Pretty Hate Machine era does have some very groove oriented sounds I bet Prince would dig. Head Like A Hole, Terrible Lie, etc. A bit darker in tone than even Prince's most angry ninties era tunes but it wouldn't suprise me like someone in this thread said, if NIN informed at least some songs off of Come for example

The Hesistation Marks album has a lot of Prince style grooves in it - it's easily the most RnB/dance driven album in the NiN discography.

I sorta get the hollow reverby groove under "Happiness is Slavery" being compared to "Pheromone," but the synths are way closer to "Loose!".

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I thought the sound you hear in Loose! was due to his engineer Bryan Black's involvement.

By Black's own account he worked at Paisley from 1995, a year after Come came out.

It might have been....The "P.H.M" disc was the rumor I heard back in the early "pre internet" 90's.

"Loose" is way more Prodigy than NIN. Something off of "Experience". I'd say it bites off "Jilted", but that came out a year after "Loose" was started, so maybe not.

now i know what this is all about. now i know exactly what i am.
