So Far So Pleased -- I agree. That solo kind of detracts from the song rather than add. There's something very generically 1970s or 80s rock about it.

This Could Be Us remix and The Word are both pretty cool, so I don't understand the complaint with those. They're not the greatest solos ever, but I like both of them. For The Word, I think of it as starting during the repeated choruses toward the end, instead of just the repeated one note. For TCBU remix, I only wish the solo was a little longer.

Btw, I love some of the solos we've been getting in the vault tracks recently.

Those solos are not baf but you can see Prince didn't invest a lot of effort in thoss

Interesting. What makes you say he didn't invest a lot of effort?

you have mistakes in all 3 solos a bum notes

I like when his solos have mistakes or soundkinda sloppy/spazzy/frantic... I thought he was sort of going for that? It's like an unchained carnalaggression vibe... similar to what others posters are saying about the "Eye Hate U" solo.

Yeah, Hendrix was the same. It was more about the emotion than the technical perfection for him and Prince's guitar style is heavily influenced by Hendrix.

If you talk about how Prince played during the 1982 1983 period during1999 era i agree

but those were not mistakes.he just experimented with disonant structures.

on The Word he was just careless its like let me stick this solo on

and master the track for release.

I think Prince was way more influenced by Santana than Hendrix.

Not a "solo" but my least favorite Prince "guitar" song is "I like it there". Its like "look a me! I'm so "grung" "indy" "alternative" and "lo-fi", meanwhile he'd been there done that much better in 1980.

Prince was a great guitarist obv He played many great solos However there are times when I wasn't totally sure the song needed one I'm all in favour of disrupting a style or genre of a song, but still not totally sure some axe murdering is what Lady cab driver needed Eye hate u is one of his best ballads and one of his great spiteful attacks but did it need that kind of guitar whiplash? I'm going to say no.

Omg yes those two songs in particular!! lol

Those two solos were a releasing of the angst and pain non vocally, the screams he could not do vocally

These remind me of the little ax scream in Sexuality "Momma, are you listening...(ax scream)"

and Planet Earth

Are you referring to his guitar solo on The Word from 3121?? If so, you must be joking. It's one of the most blistering and fitting peices of guitar work in the entire output.

I feel like the one at the end of Cosmic Day really doesn't fit the vibe of that song at all

Yeah, that song is rather all over the place but that's the only part I really like about it.

To answer the thread, the first one that jumped in my head is the outro from "IN This Bed I Scream". Not because I didn't like it (I ioved it) but it just kind of fades out as soon as it gets going. I'd bet anything it was added in (or more likely cut down) to make the CD exactly 1 hour long.

Similar "latin" feel, very similar tone (probably used the same axe) but quite different solos. I feel like the solo in The Word, in the context of the song/lyrics, just pushes it to a new height. It's economical yet powerful.

Dont get me wrong.it is a good solo.but i really think it was more of an afterthought than something Prince invested a certain amount of effort.

both songs have a minor dorian solo influenced by Santana.

But you can hear that Prince thought more about The Everlasting Now solo .

I also think that not a single guitar solo fit on Rave 2000 dvd. he was so emotionally

detached from guitar during this period and he didnt recover until Hitnrun tour next year.

I agree that the Everlasting Now solo is a beauty! Always loved it. Thanks for identifying the scale.

"The Word" specifically I don't get castigating. To me it sounds great, and one of his most successful Santana-inspired solos... actually probably in my Top 5 Prince solos ever.

.

To me the only solo he did truly worthy of your criticism is that blatantly out-of-tune solo in the Purple Rain Super Bowl performance. That's gotta be his worst solo of all time, bar none.

Shockadelica and Joy In Repetition guitar solos are the best.
