I'm sort of in the middle. I'm not gonna buy a Celine Dion album just because it has one Prince song on it. The more Prince on an album, the better. The Voice by Mavis Staples is a good example: the first half is Prince songs with the NPG playing and I really love that and the second half is other songs with other producers or songs by Prince remixed and I don't like that at all. [Edited 9/1/20 9:41am] [Edited 9/1/20 9:42am] Basically. My point is that some side projects ARE Prince albums minus the voice (Jill Jones, The Time, Madhouse, The Family). To ignore these projects because he doesn’t sing feels a little churlish. And don’t get me wrong, I’m in love with his voice but still... [Edited 9/1/20 10:24am]

Yep. And that's both the good and the bad thing about those protegé albums: they're just Prince albums in disguise. You need to hear them to get to know Prince's music, but how many of those acts ever did anything noteworthy after they left Prince? Sheila E is the only one I can think of. (Mavis Staples had a carreer before she met Prince, so that's different.) And as for Sheena, apart from the Morning Train and the James Bond song, I haven't heard much from her either. I'm with you. It almost feels like at that point why do you even need written, arranged, performed and produced by Prince? It's almost like if one only cares about Prince the singer he could have just phoned it in, never wrote a track, just sang vocals by other producers/writers like your garden variety R&B singer.... it's a blatant disregard for Prince the songwriter, Prince the producer, Prince the arranger and Prince the instrumental performer.... like how do all these other qualities amount to nothing if he doesn't sing on top of it? What does that say about the songs themselves? [Edited 9/1/20 15:44pm]

. Sounds like 'I am not gona stand in a field' for a live show. Why do you have such aversion to Prince songs? . . .

[Edited 9/1/20 20:15pm] I don't. I just don't want to spend money on an album if I know in advance that there's only one song on it that I might like. And I've stood in the field for concerts plenty of times! If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Sheena’s version fell flat to me, I prefer P’s by a landslide, so haunting and he instantly created a mood the minute he opened his mouth to sing. Dare I say, one of his underrated & soulful vocal performances on record. I could easily hear Sylvester take it church too if he was given the chance to sing it.

Since we are talking Sheena. I rather listen to "Cool Love" rather than "101" Cool Love sounds like it could be a Camille track. I know its nit I will take my place, In the great below

I much, much prefer Prince's version. It would have fit well on Batman.

I don't think it feel flat but I do think Prince's is better. Oddly, his version sounds less dated, hypnotic and like you said "haunting". I liked Sheena's voice though.
