Why did they start branding Paisley Park as Prince's house? For example, this is makling fun of it as if it was built and designed as his domestic residence: https://twitter.com/Rubbe...8263572491
At some point after his death, media and publicity kept acting like the building was made as his house, like a mansion. He lived in many houses, some nearby, but Paisley Park was opened as rentable studios, even for Hollywood movie productions.
Its a mistake to act like this was his "house".

Yeah I think 'his house' is more like his space
but didn't he live there at times?

He lived there for years in his final years but lied to the public about it. If you look at the police photos, look for the green room. It was just a bed, tv stand, nightstand and a stereo. Very basic set up. That's where he slept in Paisley.

I'd consider it one of his houses considering he lived there for long stretches of time and it was fully decked out in home amenities. |

He had to live somewhere once the Galpin (yellow) house was torn down post Manuela-divorce.
Those bed photos above weren't his bedroom, though. At least not longterm or on a permanent basis. Not sure where that horrid bed came from, and it could've been used for any reason. To note, that space is the former office area you see in "Gangsta Glam" video.
Oddly, for a man as flamboyant as Prince, his bedroom that he used was rather drab and nondescript. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

It didn't really have "home" amenities. More like office complex amenities like a little kitchen. It was also available for rent when it was opened to commercial projects like Hollywood movies, musicians, other bands mixed there (Fine Young Cannibals, REM. It's a office/studio complex. Some act rehearsed tours there. All without Prince involvement. It had property managers. Prince had a little in apt in a section of it (he did marathon recording sessions for days in a row), and yes he did eventually close it and kept it to himself, but it's a studio building. He had actual houses he lived in nearby.
Here are stories about other bands renting out Paisley Park for work: https://www.rhino.com/art...park-opens
1. R.E.M., “Shiny Happy People” – When R.E.M. initially arrived at Paisley Park, their intent was simply to mix the OUT OF TIME album, but they ended up doing a fair amount more, including recording Kate Pierson’s vocals on “Shiny Happy People,” adding melodica to “Endgame,” and having a snowball fight. They also had a couple of encounters with Prince, but they didn’t walk away as besties with His Royal Badness. “I passed Prince in the hallway one time, and I said, ‘Hello,’ and he looked at me and smiled at me,” recalled Mike Mills in a Rolling Stone piece on OUT OF TIME’s 25th anniversary. “Apparently that freaked everyone out because employees were not supposed to look at him or speak to him in any way.” |

The media started calling it his house after Prince's death. I believe he had lived there since 2009. He must have considered it his home, but we all know it was built as an entertainment complex. Hard to say why he didn't just evict some of the tenants (Kirk, Hanna/Josh, i.e.) that were living in his other actual houses or just buy/build another one. I don't know that people realized he was living there until after his death. There was an interview somewhere during the 3RDEYEGIRL era when the interviewer asked Trevor Guy if Prince lived there and he replied no. TRUE BLUE |

See the tweet I linked. They are ridiculing it's aesthetic.
People are thinking this was literally his house built to his specs as his domestic shelter for he and his family.
That is simply false. The building was not intended to be a house. It's an office building with a large atrium, caged storage areas, multi-stall restrooms, a soundstage, roll up warehouse style doors, reception desk...
This buliding is Paisley Park Studios. I have the brochure from back in the day! I've been there before the museum/tour conversion.
Sure he camped out there in a portion converted to be like an apt. But pop history needs to remember this as Paisley Park Studios, his studios.
This was not one of his mansions.

Don't get hung up on the word 'house'. It was one of many properties he owned, the most important but who cares how some random person on twitter chooses to mischaracterise it. |

The problem is that's not some random one off thing. Many people actually now believe the building was his house, and marvel at how awful that seems.
The cool thing about this building, the definitive characterization is not that Prince secretly slept there late in his life. It's that it was a huge entertainment studio center which he intended to be a commercial business and his personal studios... built in the middle of farmland far away from LA or NY... while he lived in multiple actual houses and apartments elsewhere. |

That's how it was described to fans. I remember thinking it was more like a compund, or a house attached, which is kinda what it is only it looks like an 80's industrial warehouse sort of building. Not what people really pictured when singing along with him about it.
People still talk about it in a way that....doesn't really match what we see in photos.
It makes sense because he'd always had home studios. I think later on rock journalists and fans would describe living quarters or an apartment upstairs which is more accurate, but people already were thinking of it as his house by then. I was more surprised to find out he had all the other houses.
Anyway, he did actually live there off and on.

Misinformation/ignorance, not helped by the fact he did sleep there. I don't know the ins and outs but people seem certain it was a regular thing in the later years.
.
I think it's lazy shorthand to call it his home, as if it was built for this purpose, like Neverland or Graceland. It feeds in to the Willy Wonka mythos of rich ego-fueled popstars. |

What I am complainig about is that pop culture is making it seem like Prince had this built as his house, as some sort of mansion. That is false. It would also warrant the ridicule if it was true.
Look at this fucked up headline. https://www.theguardian.c...eapolis-us
It is a standard studio/office building. He actually had a seperate house when Paisley Park was built. He has lived in several actual mansions. Paisley Park is was a cookie cutter office building with a creative paint job inside. When you go in there, the celings in the halls look this:

The Guardian is already wrong calling it a mansion and you think the complex needs a rebranding? More like The Guardian needs eyes. |

Take it easy.
All of his houses looked kind of awful. They were either kitsch, tacky, or a combination of both.
I wish he had acquired some European taste through the years, but nah, always this pompous grandiloquence, or modest-gone-riches.

Ha, yes, but there is a huge leap in thinking that Prince was like "I have made a ton of mooney and want to now make my own custom mansion"... and then by coincidence, Prince's idea for his ultimate dream home coincided with a generic office building aesthetic from 1987. That is the current public perception, which, if it were true, would be "Spinal Tap" level comedy.
Here's a room from his Toronto home:
Here's one from his Spanish home:
Paisley Park was more like a video set, composed of props and temp items. Because it wasn't built or intended as his house.

(See the title of the post) The arguement is with the anyone who brands this as literally Prince's house that he had built as his "mansion". It's the sort of rumor that demeans his reputation as an artist.
To contradict you, Prince didn't put too much stock into Paisley outside of its functionality, when I was there for the last celebration, ceiling panels were water stained from leaks (even out of place), the AC busted and dripped water onto the stage during his performance, and we know the tape/video storage was not functional. And that bedroom seems to be put together from video props. I have a feeling it's in better shape now as a tourist attraction than it was for quite a few years when he was alive.
Prince put a lot more authentic effort, intention, and personality into his temporary "3121" residence, for example. |

There are two logical flaws with your argument:
1.) You keep framing it as a choice between two mutually exclusive purposes: either it was a recording studio or it was a home. As though it couldn't be both. But it could be both, and at times it was. To put it another way, you've created a false dichotomy.
2.) You also keep pointing out its original intent was stricktly as a studio (i.e. it was designed solely to be a studi). Perhaps. But again, regardless of its original intent and designer's plans, at points it became Prince's home.
