Hi everyone. I've just picked up the ' Sept / Oct 2020' edition of 'Classic Pop' and it includes a 6 page article on SOTT:SD (5 pages of the article and 1 full size picture), a half page review (5 stars) and a full page advert.

The article includes input from Susan Rogers and Duane Tudahl (just quotes rather than full interviews).

The most interesting points I took away from the article was that although Susan has claimed she couldn't remember being involved with the re-recording of Wally, it turns out she must have been.

"It was a shocking moment. I've seen the track sheet in the tape box for the new, revised version of Wally and it's my handwriting, but I don't remember redoing it. But I can tell you right now with 100% certainty, that I would have been heartbroken at re-doing what I thought was a stunning and beautiful candid piece of work." She also adds "The revised version is the same melody and basic words but totally different emotional tone."

Also, according to Duane Tudahl the lyrics to 'Rebirth of the Flesh' were aimed at The Revolution....

"he was still upset with Wendy and Lisa - in the lyrics, he says, 'It ain't about the money, we just wanna play' which is kind of a dig"

"He also sings, 'We are here, where are you?' as if he's saying to The Revolution, 'You know what, you guys should've stuck with me - nobody bad like me!'"

This is neat and makes a great song all the more interesting and totally in character for Prince and his other diss songs like Dream Factory etc. Makes sense too since the new band is a 'rebirth' of The Flesh [band]?

Theorically if Duane says that he should have a source, i.e. someone who Prince told back then, who told Duane. I don't think Duane would go into pure spec like dat.

And it just incites the fanbase. Now, people will use ROTF in their endless arguments of Vanity vs Susannah. This interpretation is so far away from what I have ever considered the message behind ROTF to be and I am nobody's stan. It's very strange to hear people assign a far out left field motivation to a song ostensibly too focused on itself and the mission to be some sort of diss track.

Plus neither of those lines read as anything but what they are to me.

Where did that come from?

Prince disbanded the Revolution is what was told back in the day.

And if he took that initiative because of unease or whatever from W&L, then he is at fault for not creating an environment yhat they would want to stay in.

Then disbanding is an act of weakness.

And the song being a stab at W&L would be another weak step when the source of the thing is his failure.

I hope so. Prince wasn’t often the type to divulge the meaning of his songs. And if he has a source he should’ve cited it.

No but sometimes he'd brag. I mean I don't recall exactly how we know that Mutiny was for Morris and Jesse or that DF was for Paul, but he may have maliciously told someone "that one's for the Rev" or something in that vein.

I think there are some other things Susan is remembering slightly different as well. But with all the songs and different setups/locations she helped on... it would naturally happen.
