This is so much associated to "Cookie Jar" to me , A pity that it won't be on SOTT SDE... Both tracks go so nicely together [Edited 8/13/20 9:56am]

I like version 1 better. If this song was on Sign O the Times and was released as a single in 1987, this would be the b side on the 12 inch, a remix of the original version. [Edited 8/13/20 10:36am]

I know its a minority view, but I've always much preferred this version. .

I mean its a little funky.... Its nice to hear more context of the story or whatever behind the song, but this version doesn’t do it for me

Y come it's so slow? I'm torn, I like it though. I will go 2 the electric chair! For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Sounds more like a cousin to « Feel U Up » to me.
But the vocal delivery is great, as anything from this era. Still, that raw demo... There was nothing to add. I think Version 1 is Wendy & Lisa having a go at it, like « Wonderful Ass ». [Edited 8/13/20 11:26am] The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

ElGorillos said: ^ and the pitch too? Yeah, the bootleg version plays faster, I thought it was a Camille style track, I remember the boot of "Can I play with U" was at a fast pitch. Years later some bootleg compilation has 3 different versions of the song and it wasnt the same speed/pitch. I was so use to the old boots I will take my place, In the great below

Ugh. Definitely not a fan of this version. I'm seeing more and more that Prince was a far better curator for what he released than previously thought! "He's a musician's musician..."

Thanks for all the links. A treat to have this version in this quality. Formerly TheDigitalGardener etc.

I meantioned this on another thread. Apparently the boot's tape speed was wrong. I always thought it was a discarded Camille track when I heard it years ago. Either way I like Version 1 better.

I much prefer this version. It's highly intense and claustrophobic and is reminiscent in atmosphere of 'Big Tall Wall'. Love the vocals in this version also - very raw and impassioned.

The instruments feel so much more natural at this correct speed, as does Prince's voice. I like V1 the best but this is much better than the off-speed bootleg versions, the groove really shines here

But finally the correct speed and at such brilliant quality breathes entirely new life into a so-so kinda song.

I love it, always did!!
Apart from his great singing and guitar playing it has a special sound (to me) because he doesn't use a Hi-Hat there. Just like on It, Forever In My Life and Bob George. [Edited 8/13/20 13:37pm] NPG Radio:

This is fascinating having the two versions immediately juxtaposed, like this. It's fun listening to Prince messing, experimenting - I get that same feeling listeninig to Coco(a) Boys - all these ideas washing around inside his brain, funnelling out in these various versions of songs. * Very enjoyable.

Wow! I love version 1 but this has more fonk to it. The steel drums threw me for a second but they work really well on the track.

100% into version 1. Version 2 is very silly and sounds half-baked to me.

After listening to the song again, I've tried to get into it. I've now convfirmed everyone here smokes crack because Version 1 is a lot better. The song sounds so quickly thrown together, and that isn't the best, it sounds like an early idea that became Hot Thing. Which is another song I don't understand the love for, same with It, I get the stripped back sound. I think they don't work as well, Hot Thing obviously borrows elements from Cocoa Boys which works better and sounds stripped back but fuller at the same time. A lot better than Hot Thing and It for me. [Edited 8/13/20 15:00pm]

Yes, it's strange hearing it at this speed after all these years. I prefer this version by far. . Agree it's cool hearing little elements of Elecric Chair, Bob George, Housequake and Camille

Nice to finally hear a clear copy of this. I'm still more of a fan of the "heavy guitar" version.
