Weird that the only people getting bent out of shape in this thread are those talking about people being easily offended.

.

I'm a queer Prince fan and I find nothing wrong with the OP's questions despite Udo's insistence that 'drag queen' is some kind of slur (it isn't).

It is not a slur.

Nowadays one should now (according to those advocating this) that there are various genders, gender roles and manifestations of one's gender-related things.

There is no box 'drag' any more.

A 'drag' person would more completely dress up like a female, which Prince did not.

Drag isn't a Trans lifestyle.
.
To simplifiy things, generally when someone does drag, they're dressing up, they're not Transexual. If you called someone Trans a "drag queen" that would be insulting.
.
Drag itself isn't a slur, you would have to go out of your way to use it as a pejorative. Drag is more accepted than ever, I'm lost how this is a conversation. There are drag acts working children's birthday parties in 2020.
.
What drag means, and has meant over the last 30+ years is a lot more than "female impersonator".
.
Drag isn't crossdressing, though it can be, and it has always been tied to performance art and cabaret.
Historically there are celebrated drag acts that adopted Tarzan personas, dressed as clowns, or celebrities. Some would keep their masculine facial hair and just wear some blush and earings and call it a day. There's a sense of humor and provocativeness to it, but it is whatever the drag wants the image to be. It's often a separate world from female impersonators although men who could pass for women, or women who could pass for men, were celebrated at the drag balls.

I think because it comes out of the LGBTQ community, the term is loaded, but there's even straight drag, which is to say, you can be straight and do drag at this point, nobody assumes sexuality anymore...and then in the Vogue ballroom traditions, "straight butch male" could be a category, posing as a straight male then became considered drag. Today, someone like Lady Miss Kier of Deee-Lite would be considered drag for her image.

.
I mean, I don't know that anyone here is saying Prince said "I'll do drag for this photos", but it takes some cognitive dissonance to think when Prince wears it, that it's different then when the neighborhood drag act wears it or not look at it today with a different lens and get a laugh at what he pulled off and what that meant culturally.
.
(There are feminists who find the overdone caricature to be offensive, but I don't think that's what you're bringing up, it's a bit above our pay grade for Prince talk)

What I find more interesting than dressing for stage or photo shoots is that prince choose to do it in his off-stage daily life as well. To a lesser degree it seems, but still in makeup, heels, perfume, clothes that mix gender norms. (I consider norms bullshit by the way. There's nothing inherently masculine or feminine about any of it, With the exception of some underwear, and barely even that.)

But really, why did he continue off-stage? There's nothing like the sheer relief of kicking off heels, washing off your makeup and jumping into sweats. And yet he seems to have denied himself that at least publicly and to some degree privately. Why? Could he never turn the music machine off? What did he think would happen if he did?
And the MUSIC continues...forever...

It was genuine.

He did switch to costume made sort of neutral clothes, and the Versace eventually. He also had modified sneaker later on in life.

There's context.

But I doubt you read every single reply,
just what is in the interest of your own agenda.

One orger rightfully said there was nothing insulting on the OP's side.
Another explained exactly what a "drag" is.

Don't mix and match threads at will simply because I get on your nerves,
for reasons I can't fathom. Get off my balls, dude, seriously.
Go play a video game, release the tension, I don't know.
I have no business with you, please have none with me.

You're just one of these persons who need antagonism to exist.
Lots of orgers already know about it. It's your thing.

But since you ask for education, here:
On the other thread, there is blatant insulting.
Damn right I get aggressive.

So grow some finesse, for a change.
It's just around the corner.

And when it comes to beauty, I could also school you,
but we'd be here 'til next September.

Dat clear enough for ya?

The OP was referring to the caricature Prince could sometimes project,
comparing it to the caricature Drag Queens project,
because yes, they put up a show, that's what they do,
it's a night life role, they impersonate an enhanced, exaggerated persona
and it's assumed as such by themselves in the first place.

You don't see them going to their day job dressed in fuchsia glitters.

And fair enough, Prince sometimes projected an image close to caricature.
It's called entertainment.
Rarely a man in show-business
has put so much gloop on their eyes.
It made him sexy as hell, but still, that's some serious make-up.

And the OP isn't that far gone. A Drag Queen claims
his masculinity behind the extravaganza, otherwise we're talking transsexual.
It's assumed that you'll find balls under the skirt.

It's a manifesto, with fun (night-life) as its core.
Prince did wear make-up and lace props, he was extravagant
yet he was still presenting a very masculine stance.
Just as Little Richard homosexuality left little doubt.

Embodying a caricature, wearing a mask,
that's what showmen and women,
whatever their physical sex, do (except for the boring bland ones).

It's theater, not necessarily their identity.
Sure, it can be, but then it ceases to be entertainment.

Having said that, the OP has clearly very little knowledge
of what sort of persona a Drag Queen is.

Damn Mr Bonatoc,

I didn't mean to imply that the OP was a rude person; only that some questions are a bit rude in their implication. I am hardly an "orger" but I do not like to see any deceased person picked apart.

And so what if Prince occasionally dressed a bit over the line ? it's only a little expression of his uncontained artistic genius IMHO of course.

The original post was certainly not picking anyone apart. It was a compliment. Drag and the vibe of it is a legit creative mode.

Thank You,

I do not mean to disparge any Prince fan especially by means of their personal choices in this crazy life. Neo-drag queen sounds perjorative but I am old and maybe it is a positive term now: I hope so; I hope that all people feel accepted regardless of their gender or sexual preferance.

I'm not sure. I lived in SF in the Castro in the early 1980's; I was introduced to P by one of my gay roomates. I think his gear and makeup was okay for that era, and I have to give him credit for experimentation. He certainly made a name for himself!

The term you're looking for is gender fluid and i would say he was.

No it's not, drag is performance not lifestyle. Some ppl here with their 'That's homophobic', talk about tetchy. Drag queens have been known to be hetero too, especially in the UK, so cut the BS, I'm offended act. He quite obviously played with (and overplayed) the feminine, bordering on drag imagery, so it's not an unnecessary question to ask, especially if they're new to Prince for instance.
