Prince was a songwriter really. Note how he actually recorded very few, or relatively few solos on his released material. So obv he was highly competent, but he was no virtuoso. He was best on guitar, but not as proficient on other instruments.so while he was def better than average, prince knew he wasnt going to give Herbie Hancock any trouble on piano, or elvin Jones trouble on drums, and so forth. No shame in that. Those guys mastered just one instrument. Prince played more, and he wrote pop songs in a way they couldnt. But if you have ever listened to actual jazz then listened to madhouse or NEWS youd know prince was no virtuoso.i guess you could say he was def up there as a pop/rock/soul/funk musician. But jazz musicians are always going to be more skilled. And that's Quincys training.

Lol......go listen 2 the albums Q did for Mj & his R&b album then compare the writing and musicianship 2 Prince.

How? Like, for real, how did he make an ass of himself? He just didn't want to join the session, so what? He didn't do out of malice. He just didn't swing that way. He offered a guitar part and his own song. So I guess he kinda participated.

He made an ass out of himself on stage. Everyone is singing a good-natured song and Prince sucks on a lollypop. He looked like a bitch.

Quincy Jones is a rather senile octogenarian. I wouldn't take anything he's said in the past 10 years all that seriously.
A certain kind of mellow.

I think that video is pretty sad. Chopped up Quincy Jones interview intercut with Prince performance and it's really hard to get context of what the interview was actually about. I think with a person like Quincy Jones, he comes from a totally different generation of musicians and a totally different background. Not fair to Quincy or the Prince legacy. Obviously Prince was an amazing musican and piano player, but you can't compare him to Horowitz and there is no point comparing him to that. There were many great piano players in jazz and blues but no one them could make records like Prince or carry a show or performance like Prince.

Totally my thinking. It is why you will hear some describe Prince carefully as the greatest 'pop' musician and not greatest musician. I really do believe Prince could join any jazz/jazz fusion band of the 60s and 70s on guitar but not on anything else, not even bass where I think he's fantastic. Now, I think he could have played in any funk band of the 70s on guitar, bass or keys....but again, that's not his greatest gift. His greatest gift was the imagination AND great abilities on so many instruments. He had all the colours of the rainbow so could paint anything he wanted.

Once again, you can't say that about Miles or many other greats They just could not do it on their own. What they dreamed up had to be translated by others. Not with Prince.

I read somewhere that Q feels underappreciated and is not happy about his status in the world. He called MJ Machiavellian and greedy as fuck. He accused him of copping elements of Billie Jean from Donna Summer's State of Independence. He said George Harrison or Ringo Starr, I don't remember which one now, that it took him like two hours to figure out like two chords or something. I mean he's like fuck the world.

As far as Prince hater, I don't know but according to Q when Prince went to meet with MJ for the Bad duet, he says Prince called Mike Camille. Go figure. Maybe the booze discombobulating his brain?

Since no one has pulled it up yet and I've been looking for it in without success.

Who has a copy of the Billboard advertisement for prince's debut single, "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World?"

I remember looking at it when it came out but I can't seem to find any images of it.

Quincy Jones was quoted on it.

I think it was Billboard....

Quincy(whom I attended his ULTRA private STAR-STUDDED premiere of his documentary). That his ex wife Manuella also attended that sat behind me.We both were in grieving mode since it was just a few months after Prince(r.i.p.) transitioned during the part when he was mentioned.

Quincy called Prince(r.i.p.) a close friend.

Are you in the industry or something ChocolateBox3121? You say that you attended Quincy's "ULTRA private STAR-STUDDED premiere" and many of your posts seem to imply that you know quite a few celebrities and are a part of their celebrity circle, so who are you, seriously? Are you a celebrity yourself, a media person, work in the industry.....what?

Once again, you can't say that about Miles or many other greats They just could not do it on their own. What they dreamed up had to be translated by others. Not with Prince.

P could play lead or rhythm guitar in any funk or rock band, as well as bass and keys. Just as he could play all 3 in any iteration of his own band. He was very proficient on all 3. He's obviously not the best in the world at any nor all 3... why would he be? The best in the world at anything usually only do that one thing, and learn from great teachers at that one thing, and learn all the techniques and intricacies of that one thing. Like imagine Prince writing and playing Entre de Agua and then standing up and going "Kiss!" Makes no fucking sense lol.

But like I think Quincy says in this soundbite is that Prince knows some chords... which actually means a lot. It's a slight of course, but no major disrespect. Still, fuck Quincy Jones though.

Your reaction here seems... a tad excessive.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with Prince's response to the "USA for Africa" project. He didn't want to do the ego-stroking all-star jamboree night, and that is entirely his right to decide. (If I were him, I certainly wouldn't have done it either!) Instead, he recorded and delivered an entirely new song -- a good one, at that -- to the album, which, as he was one of the two or three biggest stars in the world at the time, probably helped the LP sell copies and raise money.

The only mistake Prince made was to go nightclubbing that evening... that was stupid.

Not this shit again. Am I seeing people taking shots at Quincy’s musical body of work? I understand this is a place that’s one step away from being a Prince worship hall, but some of you are loud & wrong. Your feelings about what he said aside, the man’s discography starting from his early days with Lionel Hampton all the way to our present day cannot touched, and furthermore the “Prince Vs Quincy” comparison is useless, both are very important to the culture & music, to hell with your biased feelings. When all this jibber jabber ends & forgotten, both of their music will endure.

Yeah, but Prince just made Exodus, so what do I care about that Disney Teenie Weenie Quincy anyway? He made, what I might call one of the worst songs I've ever heard. That song stunk in 1985 and still sucked major in 1995. I will never give a horrible song respect.

Bow down muthafucka, surrender your rod.
