A genius is a person possessing the qualities of great intellectual ability, creativity and originality as well as high achievement in a specific domain of knowledge or activity. They are described as having a strong intuition about their domains, and trust in that intuition. This leads to great works of art that largely differ from contemporary works. Genius may also refer directly to these qualities. Time keeps on slipping into the future...

What he was doing at the age of 21 was really impressive, he didn't work with other songwriters or musicians, so yes, he did pretty much all by himself, and he was a genius you can't deny that.
Not talkingg about any specific song. But the overall catalog.

the alleged "genius" of David Bowie, is what's appalling...the only thing i ever saw/heard with any genius to it, was his very last LP (and videos)"Blackstar" [Edited 7/18/20 9:24am]

Most artist have fans who are so enamored with the artist they declare he/she the greatest ever. Prince is one of the greatest ever but there's no best ever. How do you quantify that? Record sales. Prince loses. Chart successes. Prince loses. Most awards, etc...you get the picture. Prince is one of the greats. Personally, I am certain he was NOT a genius, however. He didn't create anything new. He didn't create anything novel. He didn't invent a new genre. He was just ridiculously good at all styles and he mixed them together in a special way.

Quite. I regularly extol the virtues of a brilliant Neil Young country song or the unashamed pop brilliance of Bowie's Never Let Me Down LP to anyone who will listen. Which is nobody. Time Will Crawl is pretty cool.

Condescending much? Listening to Prince is more exciting than listening to Neil Young and Bowie. I have tried but they do nothing for me. I don't listen exclusively to Prince either, i could never live in a world where i only listen to Prince and close my ears to a million other artists and bands.

Dude made BAD in 1987 (during his peak years mind you) and some had the nerve to still say that he was a genius and a beyond-human incarnation beyond that. Ha! Prince made Pink Cashmere around the same time +- one year. Case fucking closed.

And furthermore, just read this depressing list of his Grammy history and you understand why some of us fans need to enlightening the broader masses and in some cases overdo the term Genius to push forward a important message to people who just heard Purple Rain over and over and over again. Without knowing Just My Imagination, The Undertaker, Joy In Repetition (ONA version) etc etc. https://ultimateprince.co...5-grammys/

https://ultimateprince.co...5-grammys/ who cares what the racist ass Grammy Awards do?...people still honor them shits? Racist ass Grammy Awards? Michael, black as he was, got his 8, in 1983. Prince, black as he was, got his puny 3, two years later. And there you have it. In The public eye, a genius would never walk away from his peak years 1980-1989 with only 4 (let's state that number again, yes FOUR!!!!!) Grammy's. He got slaughtered in that so called battle with his peers. Absolutely slaughtered. [Edited 7/18/20 13:47pm]

Honestly if anything, Prince’s genius is generally understated by most fans. Prince was quite literally the best musician EVER. 1979-1987, you couldn’t fuck with Prince; especially ‘85-‘86! Move out the way, Mozart, Prince is the best musician in human history!

Michael Jackson was a genius as well. He just saw music differently; he had a different language for music. Kanye West is a genius too! He’s an artist and music is one of his many ways of expressing his art. Again, just because they can’t play 30 instruments, and have a different style, doesn’t disqualify them from being a genius.

That is a bit of a stretch.
Do I think Prince was a genius? Yeah. Do I think he was the best musician in music history? GTFO with that.
The artist that comes to mind is Frank Zappa. Although his music wasn't generally "accessible" to the mainstream, Frank was a genius. Plus, he was a helluva guitar player.
Another artist that comes to mind is Brian Wilson. The dude was 24 when "Pet Sounds" (arguably one of the greatest albums ever made) was released. The legendary musicians that worked on that album said they had never seen anyone work the way that Brian did.
Saying that Prince was the "best musician in human history" is ridiculous.

When you have stars, in their own right, gushing over him? No, I don't think his genius is overstated.

[Edited 7/18/20 13:47pm] only 10 black artists have won lp of the year in the grammy's history...and i could give glaring examples of racist nominations and awards given, but that would surely derail the thread...these transgressions are well documented, if you care to do the knowlegde.
