Just heard it, this is an excellent version! music 8 years...Prince sure had the discipline to hold onto a song for the right album.

This is apparently the same version that was being passed around with traders and it was assumed to be from 82... which I guess is what started the whole "1982 version" thinking in the first place.

To be fair, if I heard this I would not think 79' at all, but I believe the estate if they really did find the tape labeled May 79'.

funkytriton25 said: Honestly it sounds like an early Prince realizing his ‘normal’ or chest voice. He sounds good too, but not quite there yet. When he screams during the “thats when I first saw— AH,” it sounds like his early screams. Like he hasn’t got the balls in his scream quite yet; now ik he probably could have just did that for the rough cut, but still. Idk how people are saying it sounds like Prince from ‘82. Got the new wave vibe with his early chest vocals so its gonna sound weird to us. But it’s interesting

It sounds so different from what he was doing vocally at the time, especially in his lower register. It almost sounds like he took the original mix and recorded a test vocal track on top of it a few years later.

That's what I think. To me it seems like he re-recorded the main vocals and just didn't change the date on the master. this just doesn't sound anything like 1979 Prince at all but I'm still glad we're getting it.

I think his chest voice in this seems a little ‘off’ in that until this point he had only used a falsetto. He is literally figuring out how to sing non-falsetto in this moment.

The outro is everything!

“But I’ll try…I’ll sure as hell try…” changes the tone of the song!

The SOTT version is my favorite, but I love this one too.

Excellent version. So pleased it's not just some acoustic demo like the Feel For You release. I does have a similar sound to I Can't Stop, Do yourself a favour and Teacher,Teacher from 1982. They would all work well in a new wave pop rock playlist.

"Just some acoustic demo"? eek

This is great! I was expecting something a lot more stripped down for some reason - very glad to get a new wave rave up instead! I agree with other comments that it sounds like it could fit on The Rebels or Dirty Mind.

I’ve been digging that vibe recently. Dirty Mind / Controversy. BRING IT!

Hell yeah! If the early albums aren't buttressed by enough vault material for full super deluxe editions, I would LOVE a combined Dirty Mind/Controversy super deluxe.

Makes sense.

Who would have thought Prince had this sharp blade of a vocal delivery
in his Swiss Army Knife so early on?

I still can't wrap my head around how "older Prince" the lead vocal take sounds like.
It's that damn confidence in the delivery.
Thank God for Mick Jones and Joe Strummer.

What an arranger, Ladies and Gents.
Give the man no more than an eight track recorder already, damn.

Seven layers?
A mono reduction would be interesting.

It's one of the rare cases where two versions of the same song work equally. It works as a Country New Wavish Punk manifesto, and as a Country Sixties Hippie Blues.

Everybody keeps saying that it sounds like "When you were mine" but are surprised that it is from 1979. Well, "Dirty mind", the album "When you were mine" is on, was released in 1980 so why would it be a surprise that a song that sounds like it would have been recorded in 1979?

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Ok, 1 year is not that long in the grand scheme of things. Not enough that it should shock people that it sounds the same as stuff a year later. The sound had to start somewhere.

Its surprising that it started this early is all, certainly the Rebels sessions, recorded two months later, don't sound too much like this. 1979 is actually short on outtakes amongst the general public, one wonders if there's a lot unheard stuff. Maybe it'll emerge that like Around the World in a Day, the Dirty Mind sound was already finalised before the previous albums release. Anyone know when the Sister demo/writing tape is from?

nod There's a "circulating among traders only" track from 1977 that'd be too wild even for Dirty Mind. Prince sometimes toyed with ideas, sounds and concepts that he'd revisit later.

That being the case why have they released ICNTTPOYM on this set? Save it for a Dirty Mind remaster.

From superdeluxeedition.com interview with Michael Howe:

SDE: Where did you decide the start and end points were for this Sign O’ The Times era? Because with Prince, he’d be recording the next album before the current one is even out, so it’s a tricky business…

MH: It’s tricky, but the ballpark was basically late March of 1986 – basically after Parade had been delivered and gone into production, meaning there were going to be no further changes on it – through to the middle of 1987, from a studio standpoint. There are exceptions, because there’s obviously a very, very early version of ‘I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man’ from 1979, that really doesn’t belong anywhere else. That’s so compelling and so essential, that it had to be included. And there were a couple of things that were not Parade items, and that were originally contemplated for Dream Factory or just had the spirit of Sign O’ The Times from a creative standpoint like ‘Power Fantastic’ and the 1985 version of ‘Teacher Teacher’ and ‘All My Dreams’ and a couple of things that pre-dated the end of March ’86, but for the most part, the vast majority of the material is late March 86… well April 86 to mid-87, basically.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

I really don't think All My Dreams should be on there, it's a nail in the coffin for the chances of a Parade Super Deluxe anyway.

-

Do not agree.

When you are THAT young, a year is like three years.

You can get influenced several times differently in one year, and drastically 'try the change' until it fits and might stay.

-

Think about yourself and the new waves of influences, info and images that arrived in your very own young life, just like in Prince's.

We all'defined/moulded' in a few years time and our 'sponge' minds were filled with a lot of different influences. We kept some that formed us, and lost most.

Once you're older, one year, or 5 years, even 10 years don't make that difference anymore.

You are what you is when and not much new influences will ever change your personality or expressions, like when you were in your teens and early twenties.

-

Prince's sound was very different on his first three albums :

- the 'FOR YOU' LP, the sound of proving himself,

- recorded between october-december 1977, 18 years old!!! Released in April 1979!

Now this :

- a completely different sound on 'PRINCE,' the longings to become a pop and radio star

- recorded between april & june 1979 ! Remeased October 1979, And right after that...

- the 'Dirty Mind' (the 180° on every level, it even could even be from someone else sound wise,

- recorded in ay and June 1980, and released in october 1980,

-

You see, there's not even more than 6 months between albums being released and new recordings for the next one. Let alone the recordings in between, like for others, unused songs etc.

-

Just to prove this is PRINCE we're talking about.

In less than 2 and a half years he recorded HIS FRIST 3 released albums, and god knwos how many other unreleased tracks.

A year in his life back then is to compoare with 10 years in our lives (back then...)

wink Peace though.
