I thought it was actually pimps on the street and/or Andre's cousin who was a pimp

im well aware of Andre's brother being a pimp...but thats a different story, altogether...we were talking about the voice Prince uses on Cloreen Baconskin, and other songs...still not sure why its being called a 'pimp voice"...

Yeah, I'll find it. but i posted it in one of the era threads i did on the Time. When i scan thru I'll post it.

Bob George?

No

Bob George is the Jamie Starr voice pitched down.
You can tell because of the rasp and the deliberate hoarseness in his voice.
When the voice is pitched up, it's the Jamie Starr/pimp voice.

For some reason I don't think Prince would say that about his father. And I've heard his father talk, he doesn't talk like that. Not to mention they way Prince described his fathers conservative and educated demeaner, he didn't curse etc I don't think he talked like that.

Er, that's not Prince.... I believe it's Johnny Blackshire?

He's talking about The Artist formerly known as Prince.

EDIT: Sorry, I mean Kip Blackshire!

It's Dujuan. Kip and Johnny's brother. Kip confirmed to me years ago.
You see Dujuan doing it during the Rave concert.

does it say "Prince said" or does it say "Andre or Susan said"? and how does imitating someones voice implicate anyone said anything about anyone?...you do know Andre and Morris have been around Prince's father dont you?...so yeah, apparently you misread something, somewhere..

Dude, Andre & Susan would only be quoting something that came from Prince. Don't take this personal. It's not directed at you.
So no I'm not misreading anything. I'm not questioning you.

From everything I read from Prince, (just went through a bunch of 1985 interviews) Prince's perspective of his father is the opposite of 'his father talked like a pimp', unless it was John Nelson who imitated the talk.

LOL...Andre and Morris have spent time with and around Prince's father...Mr. Nelson was at the talent shows taking pictures and socializing with them...Andre has been to the house...Andre has visited with Mr. Nelson without Prince...its like youve never listened to an Andre Cymone interview or a Michael Dean podcast before, where the bandmembers and family members who were actually THERE tell what happened..and other people know and have heard this too... its quite possible you dont know EVERYTHING about Prince...and because you dont, dont be so quick to try and discredit something you dont know...⚘

In Case youre from another country or havent spent much time around black men between the age of 55 and 100, who grew up in the South, a good majority of them sound like that and use the same catchphrases..."oh lawd"..."chicken grease"..."grace"..etc..and even have that same raspy delivery due to years of kool cigarettes, dippin snuff, and drankin cheap liquor...has nothing to do with pimpin..pimps are smooth convincing manipulators...not raspy shit talkin caricatures..

the Time were fashioned after Gigolos(Get Lonely Too) Players Hipsters and Gangsters.
Including Monte Moore, St Paul, etc
That is the image on the time shows(the opening collection plate piece), Morris and Jerome in the movie Purple Rain(not to mention Christopher & Tricky were fashioned after Morris & Jerome, two Gigolos)

.

It might not be a pimp thing. But maybe 'that voice' is something Prince heard and like to imitate. But Prince's father didn't talk like that.
.
"That stuff about my dad was part of [director-cowriter] Al Magnoli's story," Prince explains. "We used parts of my past and present to make the story pop more, but it was a story. My dad wouldn't have nothing to do with guns. He never swore, still doesn't, and never drinks." Prince looks in his rearview mirror at the car tailing him. -1985

want to love you, you made me wait
Then you told me I look like a pimp
But honey, I noticed you waited till after dinner

Dapper brand of 'cool' still suits Time

In the '80s, when backdated attire turned a handful of street-wise musicians into sartorial hipsters, fans nationwide struggled to keep up with The Time.

Inspired by zoot suits, bygone Hollywood glamour and underworld cool, the band scoured hand-me-down shops for designer castoffs to enhance their image as swaggering funk kingpins. Porkpie hats, pleated trousers, wide-shouldered long coats, Morris Day's gold jacket with the tiger-print lapels. OK, not every outfit screamed panache. Some just screamed.

Little has changed, except now they can afford new threads.

"Our first clothing budget was $100," Jesse Johnson remembers. "For all of us."

Sporting flashy suits, shades and fedoras, The Time continues to pride itself on fashion sense. And in typical Time fashion, the band is still behind the times, opting for a Godfather vibe over today's sloppy chic.

It all started with sprees at Minneapolis vintage shops Ragstock and Tatters Clothing.

"We were interested in being cool," Jimmy Jam says. "It was about attitude and feeling good about ourselves, even though we didn't have the money."

Morris had to overcome his retail snobbery. "I ain't going to lie: I was a little apprehensive about going into a used-clothing store," he says. "But that original Presley (suit) came out of Tatters, and I wore it till it fell off."

No designers or stylists played a role in The Time's flamboyant early press photos or videos.

At concerts during the first tour, "every kid was dressed like us, because they could do it cheap," Jesse says. "The prices at Ragstock went way up."

The Time's dapper-duds scheme soon backfired.

Says Jerome Benton, "By the end of the tour, used suits at Aardvark's (in L.A.) were $300."

I never said they were trying to sound like pimps. We are trying to locate where that came from

grow up a bit

I guess you prefer this to Prince's sissification back then

.

It was in your own post #18 that it was YOU who posted about Andre & Susan Rogers attributing the voice to Prince's father. But you don't have any information to back that up yet. So going on your little rant about who knows what is empty noise.

.
I never said it was directly from a pimp or pimp(s) i specifically said, I remember reading something about the old pimps Prince used to hear talking. And I never said it was Prince's father.
