38+ minute version of "Lisa"!

Just listening to this now - it's awesome to hear another version of one of my all-time favorite Prince songs (released or unreleased). I always knew that groove could go on for days! Would love to see the studio version on a Dirty Mind deluxe.

From what I'm reading, this is a rehearsal take from either 1982 or 1983.

I love this. It's like Stevie meets Sylvester doing a schmaltzy wedding band cover after he hit the punch bowl and someone glued some keys together before he tested a new synth. Didn't expect the pimp voice or it to get into Kraftwerk easing down the road terrain with a free jazz break down.

(Best case yet it's for Lisa Coleman).

Might be the earliest examples of some of his signature vocal ad libs too (even if it's 1982).

I could listen to this groove all day. "Oy!"

Yeah, it slays! It sounded like he incorporated a bit of "Chocolate" into it around the 9 minute mark as well, another one of my favorite outtakes.

Totally. And yeah it gets super krautrocky in the end. Love this.

It's a rehearsal! I listened to it 3 times in a row. That's almost 2 hours straight of "Lisa" and I could go for more.

VC, it was on the recent Purple Underground Vol. 2 set ('Second Coming'). I don't have the liner notes, but the tracks are included on a disc labeled as Chanhassen rehearsal, 1982. It's basically an extended rehearsal jam.

I'm a big fan of the Katrina's Paper Dolls from this rehearsal, too.

Is it equally as loose and goofy?

Huh? It sounds fine for a bootleg off a cassette being shared on Youtube. It wasn't that long ago when that would have been listed as soundboard quality, let's not lose perspective.

Funky as f**k! What a gem!

So nice to get a genuine leak again, I've missed them!

He kept this in the vault and released other songs like shitty Cloreen Bacon Skin instead? LOL!

This version of Lisa is probably the best outtake I've heard in a while, since BFTP series at least!

Probably should have released Lisa the completed song first.

Cloreen Bacon Skin is the jam though.

This "Lisa" reherasal is essential - Prince in total free form, on what sounds like a clavinet and drum machine, just funking it up for 40 minutes on a new wave tip.

As dustoff mentioned, this isn't a new leak. It's from a bootleg that was released a few years ago, shared far and wide and discussed here at length.

That said, if it's new to you that's cool. Glad you found it! wink

IIRC, you participated in the discussion of this boot, late 2017. If you're having trouble finding a "38+ minute" version of Lisa in your collection it might be because on that boot it was split in two parts at 21:03 & 20:05.

Hope that helps! cool
