Only at the org could a thread about an awful statue degenerate into an argument about religion. Just waiting for the race fight and some stuff about Bart and then I think that’ll be us done.

bad location...Henderson is a dusty, racist, little town full of nothing...i live about 20 minutes away and thats the very last place anyone (especially someone of color) would want to go, just to see a statue of Prince.

I know that's right. Put the statue in front of the Rio hotel or something. He was the best live act to ever have a residency there. Henerson? lol ( I say we all sneak over there in the middle of the night, while wearing shirts that say "Prince Matters", and move the statue over in front of the Rio hotel....anyone with me?)

And is it supposed to be his height?

The statue is 5'7", which is pretty close to his height (confirmed 5'3" by someone close to him), PLUS his heels AND his hair.

The only thing "off" about the design is....he has no neck. Prince had that long neck which he tried to disguise with standing collars for much of his career..

Cool. I'm going to wear flats standing next to it then he'll be taller. I have zero plans of worshipping it, but it'll be nice to put my arms around it since that's as close as I'll ever get.

This is NOT idolatry. If you consider this idolatry, then having a poster of Prince on your wall or collecting all his music and admiring him is also idolatry. Having a statue of someone is honoring them and their legacy and a way of remembering them and teaching future generations about them. It’s the same as having a photo of a relative who has passed away on your wall.
I never owned a poster of Prince. Prince was a musician-I collected his bodies of work for the music. The worship of idols is something Prince detested. He would definetly be behind a statue of him justas he didn't want a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

Detested idol worship, huh? I guess you wouldn't be able to tell...with all his photo shoots and the resulting visuals used for the posters you said you "never owned". lol lol lol Stop. Of course he played into the whole "idol worship" piece to his stardom. It was half of the Prince revenue generating machine actually. To think otherwise is akin to living in a world that doesn't actually exist...

its intriguing. one of my favorite statues is Donatello's David, and something about this reminds me of that. I like the color, it reminds me of the gingerbread man song, catch him if you can.

Just a thought: if we're all made in (of) God's image, then isn't God idolizing himself? biggrin

Still trying to discern what's so negative about a "graven" image, given this defninition.

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image" is an abbreviated form of one of the Ten Commandments which, according to the Book of Deuteronomy, were spoken by God to the Israelites and then written on stone tablets by the Finger of God. https://en.m.wikipedia.or...0of%20God.

Oh....

I see.

It was written in a book 2000 years ago.

Thanks for clarifying though, seriously, because I couldn't see the problem.

NOW I do.

Boy do I ever. Some of you folks honestly scare me sometimes.

Do Leviticus next because that chapter is apparently just chock full of things I'm supposed to be upset about that make no fucking sense whatsoever.

Is it OK for me to eat a crab or no?

My ex wife once sat on a couch that I still own while she had her period. My 9 year old son sits on it and watches TV sometimes so....Is it safe for us to sit on it now or are we both doomed to eternal fire?

(We've been divorced for 4.5 years)

So hard to keep up with this stuff.

Thanks in advance for the advice and for the answer in the present.

Overreact much?
I just pointed you to a reason why a graven image would be seen as negative. It's one of the 10 commandments. You would have to have rocks in your head if you think Prince did not take that seriously. Take from it whatever you will.

I apologize if I overreacted. I just have a low threshold for religious dogma plus my nerves are worn down pretty hard right now in this day and age with everything going to shit.

I just didn't see anything in the dictionary definition that would be an issue. Didn't mean to attack you presonally if that;s how I came off. I am quite frazzled right now.

I should have qualified why I posted it. I didn't intend for it to come across as some kind of directive.
I'm starting to realise this is only the beginning of an unravelling of what we have taken for granted. I'm 'relatively' ok for now - apart from being terrified of other people - but things could get desperate for alot of people very soon. I wish for Peace too.

A statue of Prince and how it looks right about now is the among the least of my concerns.

The homages since 2016 have been ugly for the most,
and this one is a Top Ten contender, no doubt.
Not only does he have no neck, SKipper has the gout.

If some aliens from outer space land in Henderson,
they'll think this depicts the kind of über-corny singers
your grandma listens to while knitting.
She'll surely enjoy the bouquets and the bench.

Lack of taste knows no bounds, and certainly no shame.
The wall behind it is atrocious as well. A 50's corvette?
As usual, the work of a wannabe artist who knows squat
about Prince and makes an easy buck on a dead personality.

It all started to smell with Steve Parke
and his nightmarish portraits, and it's been downhill since.
Only in 2004 did we witness a sane return to elegance.
But I'd rather endure the painful Crayola splatter that was
the 20Ten pajamas and sleeve than this.

This shit's gonna put Jeff Katz and Laura Lipuma on Valium.

To be clear, I wish small towns and communities nothing but the best.

I totally understand the need for the town council to bring a few souls down to Henderson to bring the local store some more business. To be honest, I've never seen a wikipedia page so filled for a town inhabited by under a 1,000 souls.

But allow some of us to be a little pungent when so much time and efforts result in something that kitsch.

The Google result page states "Home of the musician Prince statue", which reveals that this (initially bad) idea originated from tourism objectives, not cultural ones.

This thread has had me in stitches.

Apologies to those that backed this (and wanted a name plaque to say 'look at me, I'm Prince's biggest fan evaaar!"), but this must have been put togther by someone with either a shallow knowledge of Prince, or an even shallower knowledge of taste.

Obvious statement No1 - Henderson's only Prince connection is Purple Rain. Why the hell wouldn't you commission a piece with obvious genre significance?

Obvious statement No2 - What has an unusable bench and mailbox got to do with Prince? The fact that you splattered 'Prince' slogans and images on them???

But its the 'contributor' list that tells the real story. This isn't about Prince. He would have hated something like this, just from a taste point of view. This is about contributors wanting to 'vent their loss' in a typical USA fashion. It's Elvis level of tacky.

It reminds me of the classic Christian Ronaldo statue....but with less class due to it's surroundings.

funny-cristiano-ronaldo-statue-fail-33-58dcc00c785ef__700.jpg

A simple statue of Prince, from the Purple Rain finale, pointing to the sky with the cloud guitar, and a plaque commemorating that Prince chose Henderson to film Purple Rain would have said a million times more, and probably attact far more fans.

Concur with this statement.👍

I like most here do not think it is the best representation of Prince and of course it could have been done better. But at least P is being represented and honored here. Yes location of it is not the best either, but it is in his hometown state, and it is a start.

Truth is we all will never be fully satisfied with a Prince statue and will see some flaws. We are all old skool Prince fans and have studied this man' face, attributes and mannerisms for years whether intentionally or unintentionally.

Shoot, there is a bust statue of James Dean at Griffith Observatory in the Hollywood Hills area of Cali that makes him look drunk and confused, but I never thought shit they really funked that bust up. No - looking at it made me remember James Dean and pay him some respect for his talent. And I am sure people looking at this Prince statue will do the same. I am also confident that more statues will be erected and will be improved upon.

That is a bummer about Henderson, MN. Hope a statue is erected in Minneapolis or close to Paisley Park.

Odd, because I see the exact opposite.

If anything, after Prince's death, his legend grew and now, over the last 4 years, I hear more and more people gushing (or at least speaking very positive things) about him. His death is brought up more often than Tom Petty's or David Bowie's in the circles I run in.

Exactly (in response to herb4's post)! Prince was given a tribute (Madonna) immediatly after his death, then we had the wonderful BET tribute shortly thereafter and then there was the tribute this year which was 4 years after he passed. I don't recall any musician/actor having a tribute years after they have died. I have a few Prince t-shirts that I wear around and almost every time someone will comment on them so I don't think he has been forgotten. His legacy will continue (if we keep it alive!).
