Purple Rain should be recertified!! When the PR Deluxe was released WB gave new plaques to The Revolution for 13x Platinum. Those were the same numbers that they certified Purple Rain 13x Platnium in 1996.

It should be at least 16x Platinum now. Why won't the estate or WB recertifity Purple Rain, they always do that for MJ albums, as a few years ago BAD was certified Diamond in USA.

Yes, PR is one the 10/15 best selling album of all time in the USA.
.
And without numerous reedition like Thriller in the golden era of the physical sales.
A true deluxe edition in 2004 or 2009 would have pushed the numbers at 18 millions.
.
Until 2007 Thriller and PR had sold the same amount in the soundscan era (about 2.5 millions)
Then came Thriller 25, MJ' death...

Why are you putting up the thriller album in "Prince charts"?

If you mentioned Thriller in previous versions there would be your mystery uncovered as to why the thread shut-downs.... you should know how this place rolls with that.

Thriller was obviously put in there as a reference. The 80's were all about Prince's and MJ's (friendly) rivalry. Why wouldn't one be able to post a MJ reference in a post about Prince album sales???

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

The mods are typically violently opposed to any cross pollinating discussion.

That doesn't surprise me at all unfortunately. I have seen more and more dodgy moderating in here in the last few years.

There's nothing sad about it. When will you learn that sales expectations are different for legacy artists?

What are the total USA sales for Purple Rain? Last time it was certified by RIAA was i 1996 for 13x Platinum.

It should be at 16x Platinum in USA now could even possibley be more than that, 17 or 18x Platinum in USA.

The estate or WB should push to get it recerified!

With SoundScan Numbers alone, from the last recertification in 1996 and today, Purple Rain sold 3.250.000 copies.
.
So it sold at least 16.250.000 copies in the US, for sure.
.
But who knows?
Maybe when it was certied at 13 millions it was in fact at 13.8 millions.
Who knows how many copies more it sold in music club that wasn t counted in SoundScan sales/Billboard.
.
For instance, in 2000 Thriller/BOTDF sold at least 800.000 copies in music club, making BOTDF a platinum album with only 200.000 copies sold in regular stores (!)
.
So it could be very close in fact to 17 millions.
.
With streaming added, He could very well be at 18 millions.
.
And if you take into account the sales of the movie, VHS, dvd blu ray ( well, it s the same music after all), then it reached the 20 millions marks for sure.

Maybe there was a package Purple Rain/ The vault in 1999 or something like that, that sold wellwell in music clubs, and was never counted in charts/sales.

The rainbow Children made Prince broke another charts record. Well, a tie-in record.
.
TRC is the 28th Prince' charting album in the history of the catalog album charts.
Nobody ever charted 29 albums in this charts!
A tie-in record with the Beatles and Frank Sinatra.
.
The rerelease of Crystal Ball will probably broke once and for all this record.

I'm estimating Prince re-release of SOTT will gross about 16 million. Not bad.

Sounds about right...
50K Units combined CD/Vinyl Sales (avg $200 per unit) = $10 Million
+ Digital Sales = $6 Million

*Just an uneducated guess 😂

Plus, add revenue and merchandise sales.
