Bronze Prince Statue Unveiled In Henderson, MN

I think it’s cool they used the Rave look. Not the most obvious choice.

Don't like. Not a fan of statues. Looks like clothing from the 3121 era but hair from Rave era.

Not sure why they made a stature with his head forward like that. He's got a kind of demonic Charles Manson posture there. They got other details right though. The bench on the other hand has no redeeming qualities.

I'm calling it "Angry Prince" because in some views, it's almost scary.

..i guess

it's a statue

.

It looks like it would fit nicely in the back of a pickup, so i expect it to soon reside on someone's front yard next to gnomes and a flamingo

It seems like they were going for the look from his 1999 appearance on The View.

1 post out of the first 10 is positive. It never ceases to amaze me how negative Prince fans are. Why can't you just be happy that he hasn't been forgotten? confused

Well, the hands look like his, as far as I can tell. The shoes look about right. I wonder if it is about mine and his height, or if they him larger than life. May need to take another road trip up a couple of states to find out!!

Yea I was kinda surprised by the hate. I think it’s pretty cool for the city of Henderson to do, commemorating him and the fact some iconic Purple Rain scenes were shot there. It seems like a lot of work went into it. And bravo, I say.

And yes Prince would’ve hated a lot of things that are happening now, when he was alive, including all of his music being on YouTube and Spotify. But I think now that he’s gone, he would be happy people are still showing love.

I think it's a poor sculpture.

.

And I'd much rather see P-memorials such as schools named after him, for example, than statues.

Hello? Yes, is that 'Rough-Likeness-Statues'?

.

I'd like to comission a rough-likeness-statue of my hero, Princey. In bronze.

.

You can? Great!

.

First up, can you make sure that he looks a little like Frodo? I love me some Lord of The Rings!

.

Okay, and let's stretch out that Cloud guitar to mess with the perspective a little. That'll really get people thinking. Prince wanted people to use their brains and trust their own perception. Who needs scale?

.

And could you make him look a little angrier? perfect.

.

Right, it's time to put the statue in position. In downtown Minneapolis, you say? Hah! Oh lordy, no! I'm thinking the main drag on Henderson. Expect the unexpected, as my Princey used to say.

.

The statue looks great, but I don't think an edifice of Prince wearing heels and a symbol necklace, and playing a Cloud guitar really screams 'Prince'. You know? Can we put up a sign or something?

.

Nah, that's still not doing it. Let's surround him with purple flowers. After all, nothing says 'Prince' like some purple flowers. You know what, let's run with that idea and put him in a garden. Kinda like a gnome, but so much funkier. Yeah yeah yeah.

.

But now I'm worried that people might be confused by the garden thing - could we put up another sign that says 'Prince Garden' just to clarify?

.

Over-extending our budget? Don't worry about that, let's keep piling it on. Crowd-funding, baby.

.

Hmmm, we're just not nailing this message. You know what might work? A bench. For people to sit and contemplate while little Prince looms over their shoulder like Gollum [there it is again, Lord of the Rings! This is great!]

.

The bench is gonna need some signage just to make sure people are clear that this bench is for Prince. Just because the bench is right next to the statue, it isn't clear that this is a Prince Memorial Bench. This isn't just any bench. It's a purple rain, ripoppgodazippa, let's go crazy kind of bench. So let's get some doves, some symbols, some Princey slogans on there. Slather that shit on there.

.

Ooh, and could you make it look kinda like a coffin? Amazing!

.

Do you think it might be crass to write 'May U Live 2 See The Dawn' on the coffin bench? Nah, let's do it!

.

Okay I think we're nearly done. But I just feel like it's missing something. Think think think.... Prince Prince Prince... Hot damn, I've got it! A mailbox! Purple colour of course. This is Prince, after all. Let's write 1999 on there JUST TO BE CLEAR THAT THIS IS A PRINCE MEMORIAL.

.

Perfect. I mean, it's a little more minimal than I wanted, but it will do for now. We can add more stuff later.

.

(let's just get one more symbol onto that lamp post)

.

(and maybe that famous sillhouete of him spreading his arms. He'd like that.)

PIPS! Eurgh...

Gotta say, though in all seriousness. The statue itself is nice. The setting with all the cartoony purple and that cringeworthy silly bench is mighty tacky. In aggregate it's "a bit much"

Even without seeing the statue, I knew Prince would not want any landmark made in his name because of his religious views regarding idolatry. But who cares about honoring the wishes of someone who has passed on?

This is NOT idolatry. If you consider this idolatry, then having a poster of Prince on your wall or collecting all his music and admiring him is also idolatry. Having a statue of someone is honoring them and their legacy and a way of remembering them and teaching future generations about them. It’s the same as having a photo of a relative who has passed away on your wall.

I never owned a poster of Prince. Prince was a musician-I collected his bodies of work for the music. The worship of idols is something Prince detested. He would definetly be behind a statue of him justas he didn't want a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

One other thing I noticed, they slapped the silly bench next to the statue, then put up a chain so that people can't sit on it! A little more crazy please? After seeing the latest round of everything that is around it...just wow. Just his statue on an elevated pedestal with all sorts of purple flowers around it in a circle would have been so nice.

My mom used to say something about yards when we drove by admiring all their yardwork. "Just a little too much goo-ga on that one", she would say. This meant, too many concrete angels, windmills, tire planters painted white, solar lights, wind chimes, wishing wells, gnomes, birdbaths, flag poles, hummingbird feeders, welcome signs, trees with fences around them, squirrel feeders, flowerpots...you get the idea! Hmmmmmmmmm

Actually the bench was there first. It is beautiful.

It's amazing how he is being remembered, honoured, and his legacy continues
