7" singles box set question

Is the 45 for "The Cross" a replica of the original South African 45? Will it have the edited version of "Adore" on the b-side and why isn't that edit on the main box set "Single mixes and edits" disc? It is an official edit and was on "The hits/The B-sides".

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Obviously we don't know yet (maybe some insiders do, but the bulk of us don't). We'll have to wait until people get their copy.

However, my guess would be:

- With these occasional odd foreign 7'' edit (there have been a few others), it's likely the edits were made by the local WB branch, without Prince or WB USA being involved (or probably even aware). If so, this means the masters for such edits are lost somewhere in this foreign WB archives (in this case South Africa), and might be hard if not impossible to locate so long after the fact. This means the only option would be to either needledrop them (an option chosen by the Bowie estate on several edits on the recent box-sets) or recreate them faithfully from the US master (this shouldn't be too hard).

- The edit on the 7'' is labeled with a different length from the 1993 Hits edit, so unless it's a typo, this is all the more an indication of the fact that it probably is a different edit. The reason why a new edit was made in 1993 is probably, as said above, because WB USA wasn't even aware of this edit existing and/or wouldn't bother asking a foreign branch for the master.

- End of the line, this is also probably why the 7'' edit isn't on the main SOTT Deluxe release, I honestly wonder whether Michael Howe was aware of the South African promo (it's not listed on Princevault and I wasn't aware of its existence either until yesterday) and whether the current 7'' is a coincidence or a genuine attempt at recreating the old promo.

- If it's a coincidence you can expect the 1993 edit to be there, or maybe even a whole new edit. If it's an attempt to recreate the promo you can hope for either the original, a needledrop of the original or a recreation of the original.

Just thinking, if the South African edit is different, I need to find somebody who has it so I can get a copy! biggrin I just assumed "The hits" version was the same edit. Sometimes with times, they just kinda round the time up. I've seen it on many records I've digitized in the past. The time ends up being very different from the time on the label. I know my "Hits" file is like 4:41 and the South Africa edit says 4:46 on the label, which is obviously only 5 seconds. Could just be 5 seconds of dead air on the record. Sometimes it is a pain being a completist. lol

EDITED to get the times right biggrin

Yeah same here, and I'll need to know if it's the same edit or different for sure for my website. Even if I don't get a copy I really hope someone here has the 7" and can tell us whether it's the same edit or not. But I'm pretty sure it's not.

lol yeahthat

Some complain about the inclusion of edits on the super deluxe sets, some of us complain about omissions that don't fit on the single disc. wink

I know it sounds crazy but I like having the edits but I want them all! biggrin I hope it didn't sound like a big complaint. I love the track list of Sign O' The Times SDE! I like the edit disc! I'm also happy they included "The cross" in the singles box set. Makes me believe they know it exsists!

I made a 9 disc set of single edits (as djThunderfunk knows). I put the "Hits" version of "Adore" on the set and labeled it (South African 45 edit). If that isn't correct, I'd like to fix the mistake.

I wonder will it be the clean intro of the song? The one on the hits wasn't a clean intro. I want the isolated track not one sequed from Beautiful Night. mad

I noticed that about the Hits version too. It woudn't surprise me if the foreign edit were made directly from the album and not the master. Another reason to think it may be the same version. A few of those foreign edits are odd like that. Songs just fade out of nowhere lol I'm trying to track down someone who may have the actual record.

I'm not in the market for that 7" box set, but I live only a few miles from where they're made. I wonder if the Third Man Records store has any set aside for in-store sale?

See the above photo.

This is being pressed by Third Man Records and was only available on their site and on the estate's site.
