yeah, there is a WB executive who saw the movie with the alternate ending. He liked it very much.....says that,in this version, you find yourself rooting for Christopher. He became a more likable person.

.

Wouldn't that just make a great dvd to add to Parade Super Deluxe? In colour if possible!

nod

Two DVD's?

One the original with remastered video/audio.

Two the colour version with remastered video/audio.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

without a doubt, NOT bringing the SOTT tour to the US that summer of 87. BIG mistake.

1987 MTV Music Awards, should of played U Got the Look (HUGE in the US at that time) and ICNTTPOYM.

He checked out WAY too early on that project, just to give us the fluffy Lovesexy. gag.

That thread about the SOTT tour not coming to US got me thinking. What some of Prince's biggest missteps? These come to mind:

Name Change

SOTT Era has a bunch:

If I was your Girlfriend as 2nd single off SOTT

Not touring in US

No video for SOTT single

Moving on too soon with Black Album and LoveSexy

Not a mistake but Death of Baby Amir

LoveSexy cover photo

Directing UTCM himself

Disbanding the Revolution

Incorporating the Game Boyz and Tony M into band

The name "New Power Generation" still corny as AF

Rave

TRC

Not performing at Live Aid (i think not doing We are the World was the right move)

Some thoughts:

Name change: totally okay

SOTT: def needed more US interaction (there is a video for SOTT single, probably the first lyric video ever); "Strange Relationship" should've been a single.

Lovesexy cover: not a mistake, go look at Amorica by The Black Crowes (pubic hair), Dirty Mind (pubic hair), Two Virgins by John Lennon (nudity), almost any Rude Ray Moore album cover (nudity). One has to remember that 1988 was Reagan/Bush era conservative america. Every one was upset about every damn thing. Had that cover come out 10 years later, no one would've thought twice about it. Or even 10 years before. The cover wasn't a mistake, electing Reagan and Bush were. haha

UTCM: probably - I'm not sure how great of a director Mary Lambert would've been for a movie, but someone could've gotten the job done

Revolution: probably had at least another album or two in them, a good 5-year campaign would've been great, but then we wouldn't have had SOTT or Lovesexy as we know it.

Tony M: TOTAL MISTAKE

NPG: great name, it's more of an idea (although The Revolution was too); has anyone ever thought about how silly Paisley Park sounded? It's relative, but NPG is far from a mistake. It's not damanged him. In fact, once he officially adopted the name in the band, he had a #1 hit, his first in a couple of years (not that the name had to do with it, but clearly people didn't find it off-putting when listening to "Cream").

Rave: named anything else would've been fine, but to pull out an old song and tack it on a bunch of new tracks felt like a cheat to fans

TRC: don't even get me started, but in general good music, dogma - no thanks.

Live Aid: It was so scatter brained and nutty, I'm not sure it would've been a great idea anyway. Plus, wasn't he in France at the time or at least gearing up for that? I'm sorta glad he didn't do it. MJ didn't either and no one saw that as a mistake. You know who shouldn't have done Live Aid? Led Zeppelin.

These points are better.

Not sure if this is true or not,but I recall reading in People magazine why there was no video for the song "Sign O' The Times".Supposedly,Prince was pissed at MTV because they refused to show Jill Jones' "Mia Bocca" video. As retaliation,Prince refused to give them a video for SOTT.Which makes me wonder.....is there a "real" video for the song? hmmm the video with just the lyrics is probably a replacement video that Warners quickly threw together.

Sign the single was dropped in February 87 with the album released in March 87. I remember seeing the video in March 87 about a week before the album dropped.
Now Mia Bocca dropped in April with the album dropping in May.

I always felt the 'Welcome 2' tours period was a missed opportunity to have a flow of all the musicians/singers etc he's worked with to perform as a band... It was a time when it felt like Prince had already done everything an artist could have done. And felt like a full circle period.
.
The missed opportunity to reconnect with the Time(07) the Family and the Revolution at this period, could have added a different spike of excitement and interest I feel.

Didn't he do that with the Musicology tour?

By the way, everything Prince did changed his career if we're being technical. Purple Rain changed his career. The Triple Threat Tour changed his career. Under The Cherry Moon changed his career. Disbanding The Revolution changed his career. Doing Batman soundtrack changed his career. Getting married, losing Amiir, getting married again, getting divorced again, creating 3rd Eye Girl, appearing in illusion-ass pants on MTV, changing his name to prince, releasing Diamonds and Pearls - you name it.

Being an artist is about pushing yourself, doing better or different the next time to further your abilities and gain interest (or not). He did that with every project, every friend lover sister mother wife, concert, after show, private gig, interview, or pair of Cuban heel boots.

Better or worse is relative and subjective.

Except Tony M. People make choices. And that was a choice.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I don't think the Time was opening(the original band) for Prince for the Musicology tour. Morris Day and the Time, opened on some scattered shows.

I'm talking about the Time(with a new album) opening

The only shows that suffered during the welcome 2 tour were the ones that had that bullshit symbol stage. Said it b4...looks cool as hell, but it does a disservice to the music and the vibe usually given from a cohesive band jamming together Instead, it's a cohesive band practicing social distancing. Hey, P was ahead of his time, what can ya say?

Playing in the round is certainly a strange concept. At The O2 shows, I always felt sorry for anyone behind the drummer - especially those on the floor in the front rows.

it was the same for some of the Lovesexy shows. Although I felt that it kinda worked there. Stage was too big certainly, but not overly annoyingly so.

The single biggest misstep of his career was releasing AWTIAD after Purple Rain, and so soon after to boot.

I love the album, but it changed the entire course of his career.

Imagine being an executive at WB and hearing this for the first time.

I would've released something huge in around 1987, then after waiting for that to die down release a sequel (The Dawn?) to Purple Rain (around 1989-90).

Songs from AWTIAD and Parade could've been killer B-sides.

But this is me thinking big. Word is Prince was already fed up with megastardom post PR but me personally; I wouldn't have pissed it away.

AWTIAD and Parade all came out very quickly after PR. I think it kept him in the public eye and kept traction on his career.

I think his mistake was, Prince released a record every since year from 84 to 92. That's an insane amout of records to release so fast one after another. Maybe the misake was he should/could have taken more breaks in between.

This ALMOST changed his career but since "U Got The Look" followed no damage was done.

Oh noooooooo LOL at least in the 80s No breaks lol

Dirty Mind
Controversy / The Time
1999 / What Time Is It? / Vanity 6
Purple Rain / Ice Cream Castles / Glamorous Life / Apollonia 6 -Manic Monday, I Feel 4 U, Sugar Walls
ATWIAD / Romance 1600 / the Family / the Dance Electric
Parade / Mazarati / Sheila E
SOTT / Jill Jones / Madhouse 8
Black album
Lovesexy / Madhouse 16
Batman

Now what was needed for ATWIAD was smaller shows(non concerts) and more videos
Parade (UTCM)time to get a better script, band inclusion, real film director

It 100% played on MTV.

I'm almost certain the lyrics video is new created by the estate.

I thought the SOTT music video was an instant classic and kinda revolutionary for it's time with all the graphics on display?

Yeah, it's different but it's definitely a music video. lol Not sure what some here are on about. As someone who works in the audio-visual field I found it pretty inspiring as a kid. It's not strictly audio-responsive, but that kind of minimalist aesthestic synched to the music (albeit in a very basic way) was very fresh and forward looking.
