Kids really want to discover music on their own, especially as they get older. If they like what they hear they will actively listen to it, identify with it, and make it their own. It has to have personal relevance apart from parents, family, and friends... That way it belongs to them... Us... And not our friggin' parents!

I discovered David Bowie when going through the loft and finding my Mum's old LPs - together with a polaroid she took at the front of a Ziggy Stardust show.

Similarly, a friend's dad had a 50 LP collection charting the history of popular music (several songs per artist). Over time, we copied the LPs to cassette, played them in the car, and discovered all sorts of music.

I guess it depends how open the kids are to different types of music.

It depends on how old (young) you are when you have kids and what you're into. My daughter was born 1 week before my 20th birthday, so I was still young and listening to what was "cool". And her entire childhood I was a mobile and club dj and always kept up with the new. The only way she could have rebelled musically was to go full classical, or pop country or some other "uncool" genre. LOL!!

To this day our tastes line up almost perfectly.

Not suggesting teenagers rush to have kids so they like the same music or anything though...
