How many different versions of The Hits/The B-Sides are there? Are there both dirty and clean versions?

I personally have owned it on CD & Cassette, and never saw different versions. However, 1 and 2 are different in that one has more x-rated shit on it, and the other is a bit more listener friendly. That's about the only division. I think one of those had a sticker on it as a single disk, and the other didn't. But as a set of 3 disks, it always had a warning sticker on it. I've never heard anything edited on it. Same goes for the Peach EP afterward. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I guess there isn't though...

I'm not aware of a clean version and anyway, except for "fucker" on Sexy MF, which was cleaned for the single and MV, I don't really see what else could have been cleaned. My understanding is that The Hits 1 was supposed to be the "clean" best of, while The Hits 2, with DM, Head and Sexy MF, was to be the "parental advisory" best of. If there is a clean version, however, I'm as curious as you to see what it means in terms of content. There are "clean" versions of and Emancipation, though. But I'm not aware of other albums/comps having been "cleaned". A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

. https://www.discogs.com/T...ase/738213 . The clean version of Emancipation was for years available for next to no money because nobody wanted that turkey. © Bart Van Hemelen

Incidentally, just before Sexy MF wa released as a single in the UK, Prince/WB sent a promo to the BBC. Evidently it was NOT censored, so the BBC quickly put together their own edit, where the offending half of MF was replace by ones of Levi's licks from the guitar solo. I though t it sounded good, and better than the official edit. No heard for years though.

It's funny because in France there's no such thing as censoring cursing on TV, even on public service. Violence has sometimes been edited out horror movies on some mainstream TV channels, but no one ever cared about cursing at all, it's just not much of a topic in our culture and children are just expected to be taught by their parents what is appropriate to say or not in real life situations. I grew up watching movies and MV's with cursing all the time, and Sexy MF was of course unedited (pretty much everyone understood what it meant even if it was a foreign language). We never had issues with nudity on TV either, or this whole parental advsory stickers nonsense on records. . On the other hand, up until the late 80's the French (governmental) advisory board that was in charge of approving children magazines was way much stricter than the US comics code authority when it came to violence. In the late 60's/early 70's, magazines translating early issues of fantastic Four, Iron Man and other Stan Lee era Marvel comics were put off the shelves, then forced to be published in B&W so they'd be less "shocking", and guns had to be erased from the panels. Yet anyone who's read early 60's Marvel comics know how innocent they are, it was a pretty wild idea of what "violence" was that these old fools had at the advisory board!! This regulation soon became less strict after publishers talked some sense into the board, but one publisher chose to publish Marvel and DC comics with a "for mature readers only" label for most of the 70's to be left alone, and as late as 1986 the publisher that was translating Daredevil had to give up on the series for a couple years, because the Born Again era was deemed too violent for publication. On the other hand, it would never happen today that nudity would be erased off 70's Marvel Dracula bookshelves reprints, but it happened in the US some years ago. And this whole nonsense from 2007 about Spider-Man's marriage being "erased" by Mephisto because a children-friendly Spider-Man could not possibly divorce also seemed quite awkward from a French perspective . I always find it quite fascinating to observe what is deemed acceptable in a country/culture and not in another, particularly in this USA/UK/France case because the reasons are obviously quite arbitrary (we're talking about Western countries, not Saudi Arabia or something). Yeah, I bought a backup copy of Emancipation for super cheap and when I finally played it, there were some edits for language on it that I was not happy about.
