2020 (the song), left me a bit sad🙁

I was searching through an old hard drive and came across the song '2020'.
It's a great little trinket of a tune full of optimism and light.
I felt profoundly sad when I thought about the way the world is in the actual 2020.
It probably seemed like science fiction to Prince when he wrote it but now that we're here it's ironic that we seem to be further from the described utopia than ever! Plus, the fact that we will never know what he was thinking because he has gone.
Let me know how you feel about it 😎✌❤

Love this surreal little song, remember first listening to it before Prince.org! Back in the alt.music.prince days.

Yeah, it is (to me) a pretty sad song. Mayte's voice sounds so small and waif-like in the beginning. Kinda crazy how he wrote this about this particular year in the future, and now we have the pandemic going on. I know he was always ahead of the curve, but it is a little spooky...

for this being one of my favorite outtakes, it still took me the best part of 20 years to finally
realise the lyrics was "synesthetics, everyone - taste the color, smell the fun" and not
"same aesthetics everyone - taste the color, smell the fun" (which never made sense, lol).

should have been the intro to the whole emancipation set. followed by New World or such.
well, and followed by more adventurous, weird music on the whole.

say, how about we have another 1DiscEmancipation thread?

oh well.

I was thinking about this yesterday and how the reality couldn’t be more opposite to this song. Definitely no dance floors with 3000 people and plenty of fear and Then I went on a day dream to late 2020 where this is all over and a side effect has been discovered where some who’ve recovered have developed synesthesia and then the whole damn song would be the an incredible premonition.

[Spoken Intro: Mayte]
The year is 2020
And in the club - Love4OneAnother
Students dance to the heartbeat of the drum

[Verse: Prince]
Three thousand or more
Dance on the dance floor
Synesthetics every one
Taste the color, smell the fun

[Chorus]
The force of nature is what brought us here
The walls between us soon all disappear
The year is 2020 and there's no more fear
If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

Yeah, 2020 was pretty much sci-fi when we first heard that song over 20 years ago (I think it leaked in 97 or 98). I remember wondering how it'd be like in 2020 back then, and here we are!! I listened to it with my friends right after midnight on new year's eve, felt I owed Prince that much.

.

I think it was a terrible missed opportunity for the Estate to not release it on streaming platforms on January 1st. It would have been a nice gift to the fans, and it would certainly have attracted the media's attention (I can already see the headlines "How Prince saw 2020 in 1996! Prince Estate releases intriguing outtake to celebrate the new year"). But I guess Mr. Howe probably isn't even aware it exists sad

wow, thanks 4 the lyrics. the level of opposition to reality is eerie. i guess theres still time, the year is young wink interesting that symptoms include loss of taste and smell. i wonder if mayte has shared any memories about this song recently.

I wonder if a future dominated by narcissism was Prince’s dream of Utopia!

I remember working out how old I was going to be in 1999. It seemed like very, back then.

I first heard this song around the same time that I heard digital garden, before The Rainbow Children was released and I thought it sounded like it could have been on that project. Assumed it would be as I didn’t know that it was already a few years old and an outtake from Emancipation.
