I don't know, but tell me, should have Al Sharpton called him whitey like he did Whitney Houston? What's your point?

I was just curious. I don't seem to remember Prince ever taking crap for not being black enough.

Prince had that look because it was the fashion on the catwalks at the time or it could be Prince representing he is dead with a ghost like face.
Toratora at the time as a disguise and Prince is dead. At the same time Slave written across his cheeks. Prince was crazy at the time and I loved him 4 that. The typhoon suited him but I didn't like the short hair at the time.

As someone in this thread mentioned; the real pale dead like gaunt face was the "Prince is dead" phase. Which stopped at the AMA when "Prince" was reborn prince. It's the performance which prince rises from the floor dancing and mouthing along to Billy Jack Bitch. The real dead pale look was for a short period. It's just Prince doing performance art.

This. Mayte was fair-complexioned and I think their styles were complimentary starting in the Love Symbol era through the Emancipation promotion. Unfortunately, during the era in question, this also extended to the makeup and nobody cared to tell him "Dude... this color isn't working for you."

Prince always had issues with reconcilling the white side of his family with the black side of his family.

Yet he did manipulate this to his advantage.

He created white pop/rock music that would be played on white radio stations to attrack the white dollar to sell out stadiums. Prince was never ashamed about making money, whether it be black or white!

However, he kept black people in his band and portrayed a black persona in order to prevent people criticising him as selling out. The aftershow gigs were usually funk based to reinforce the facade.

The reality is that Prince was mixed race yet he would identify himself as being black yet visually and musically portraying himself as white.

Sadly Prince did abuse the white side of his heritage to make money and in doing do he sacrificed the black side.

Certainly in the very early days he was represented as being black as the record label would have had issues with him being mixed race! They would never had been able to sell him to radio as being mixed race as people would have been confused. People like neat and tidy boxes and labels!

Yet, in Prince's final years he took to wearing his big afro, again to remind people he was black, while taking the white dollar.

In conclusion Prince was either very clever, a master manipulator, or he had identity issues or he was clinically bipolar!

Bob George was a direct response to the crap Prince was taking for not being black enough. The "George" is Nelson George, who disgracefully wrote in multiple articles that Prince was a sell-out to white audiences.

Speaking of the 90's (thread title), weren't fellow NPG members quoted about how Tony M. expressed this and said he was going to do something about it?

I think he was dabbling in coke during this period but I can't prove it, of course.

Suffice it to say, as a recovering addict who's been in contact with a lot of users, I have a bit of an eye for it, can notice the look and such as that is for whatever that's worth. Overdoing the make up makes sense and fits in perfectly with it. He was also very thin and gaunt during that period which was odd and was a body type he never really exhibited otherwise until the last year or two of his life. Which, regarding the latter, I don't think had anything to do with cocaine FWIW. He was always tiny but watching, say, the KISS or WDC videos, usually had a musculature about his frame.

Obvioulsy, this all speculation on my end so whatever.

In the investigative reports, there is employee description (from later years) of weight loss accompanying phases of increased opiate use.

Also, can you explain why overdoing the makeup would make sense and fit in with what you describe? I’m a little slow.

I thought Prince was always uber skinny. I think he looked skinnier in 2009 than the early 90s. But then looked really healthy and decent weight from 2010-2012.

"white side of his family"???.. Prince didnt have a "white side of his family"...he was a black man with 2 black parents...you say white side, as if Prince were half white like in the movie Purple Rain...

In all fairness, it wasn't just the movie, there's interviews where he pervades the myth in his own words verbatim.

I recall some earlier interviews either in Right On! or Black Beat magazine where Prince claimed to be mulatto. Years later I heard that his Mother stated "Prince lied a lot in some of his earlier interviews, Me and my ex-husband are both Black.

Not sure where you got your information from, but both of Prince's parents were light-skinned black people. He was not "mixed race".

If you have ever seem pictures of Prince's parents you will see they are clearly black - they are not light skinned.

However, you forget someone's heritage doesn't end at their parents. People will have grand parents, great grant parents and so on. It's known as parental lineage.

When Prince died details of his parental lineage where revealed and it showed white ancestry hence why Prince Looked white.

Why do you have a problem with Prince having white ancestry? There is nothing wrong with being white!

You will find the details on earlier org threads and Google.

I don't know what you consider "light skinned" but Prince's parent were light skinned black people. Black people skintone comes in a variety of shades, from the lightest light to the darkest dark, and Prince's skintone fell on the side of the lighter spectrum, and so did his parents. Prince did not "look white". Anyone could see that Prince was a black man, just a lighter skinned black man.

^^Paleness can be due to a variety of reason, some health wise. I am a light skinned black person, just like Prince was, and at one time in my life, I was very pale, only to find out that I was anemic, and my iron level was low. Doc put me on iron tablets, and the paleness left when my level was normalized.

He didn't really, until the 90's era we're talking about.

...More suits, more big dudes on stage with him, more rap, but the women got white with straighter hair, and his funk was more refined than raw shirtless sweaty ...so somehow it lead to more criticism...but he was really spared a lot of what MJ went through...and some people thought he was mixed race to begin with.

Spike Lee is definitely a good example of someone who took shots (until Girl 6), but he also claimed Prince stole his Umpa Loompa reference when it was the other way around, so he must have been half joking to get his attention. I think Prince rejected licensing a song and that's how it started. Spike has descriptions of trying to get Prince on the phone in his diaries. Also pretty sure Prince gave cash so Malcolm X could be completed without the bond company firing Spike.

Early 90s was my least favorite Prince era. To me the great thing about Prince is he wasn't trying to be like everybody else, he didn't follow trends. But bringing in a guy just to rap on records was just plain embarrassing.

Prince would look pale ONLY from the use of makeup--really. He was a brown-skinned man who might look ashen if ill, but certainly never light-bright.

>

Prince's early-career comments about "family Whiteness" was myth-making crafted to propel a sensational exposure to the media to hype his act. I should say toward some earlier comments, that if European lineage in a Black person's life allows one to be construed as a European/White person, then the world has turned inside-out, or else somebody has a twisted perspective of our global history and sociology.

I think that Prince's employ of white female dancers was his equivalent response to the White rock band's employ of black female backup singers--stylists plus "exotic" props. Or perhaps he just enjoyed having a little physical contrast on his stage at the time.

I thought Prince's addition of rap to his act was a cool phase--nothing for me to criticize--but I'm also not a hip-hop purist nor of conservative taste!
