It was a bit too damn 'lemony" in certain spots but otherwise, I thought it was really good and enjoyed it. Totally loved Maya Rudolph, H.E.R., The Foo Fighters, Gary Clark, Jr., EWF, The Time, and of course, The Revolution. heart heart heart

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I thought it was pretty darn good!

.

.

I'm not familiar with HER but she did well and her voice was well suited to the songs.

.

i don't know St vincent...she looked great but she had no stage presence up there.

.

.

The music/band was great on all the songs...and guess who was responsible for that? Sheila! her band is always top notch which is why Prince always pulled her peeps into his bands. And it was smart to have Lynn Mabry and the other female BG vocalists there so all the vocals sounded full and complete.

.

.

Manic Monday was great. i'm not a huge fan of either of them but they did a great interpreation.

.

.

EWF clearly killed Adore which is hard to do!!

.

.

I thought SOTT fell flat---- given how they did the drumline in the movie, i thought there'd be more drama with that than what we saw, though Common's rap was pretty good.

.

.

The Time was amazing---so great to see the full original 7! Morris and Jerome still got it!

.

.

1999 was kinda crazy; never heard of that guy and he didn't sing very loudly but the arrangement was pretty good.

.

.

Purple Rain was nice. i'd like to see the rest of the Revolution songs; what else did the Revolution play?

.

.

i was really pissed they cut off baby I'm A star at the best part: all teh stops and starts. ;(

.

Otherwise I thought it was great. Despite all the hate for sheila lately, no on can pull off prince songs LIVE the way she can. I saw the Revolution twice since his passing and whiel they are great, they don't quite re-create the same sound/feel we're used to from a Prince performance. Sheila does. she even includes little musical cues that Prince used to do back in the 80s tours that only someone who was there would even remember.

yeah forgot to add that Wendy really nailed the solo on Purple Rain.

I've seen her do it a few times and she has even said she normally just tries to give the "flavor" of Prince's solos rather than try to 'copy' them etc. but she really did a great version here that sounded very close to what your brain wanted ot hear without copying.

.

.

Also loved the Revolution's outfits. was the magenta supposed to "raspberry" as in "beret" or do you think it was purple in person and just read more hot pink on TV?

The revolution owned and I think the decision not to do the NPG was made exclusively by you know who. That was a huge part of prince and to totally omit it was a shame. Liked it all overall some stuff was flat like Juanes and also Common two iconic songs seemed thrown together last minute. Gary Clark killed it as did the foo fighters to inject some rock into the show, would have liked the revoltionn to

actually play a song and not be the backing band cause they kick ass, computer blue into darling Nikki would have killed but it seems a foo fighter and revolution combo was also cut. But that is a musicial directors mistake. I like shelias playing though she needed a kit on the cross because it almost ruined what Gary did and Shelia was the drummer on that so no excuse for missing it. Hate they cut off baby I'm a star but they could have done without a commercial break at six minutes to go, wtf? I knew right there credits would be rolling and it would be cut. Susanna and Chris did great, but I would have killed to see Paul Peterson doing his song and the real version of nothin compares I mean John did OK but Paul to this day kills that song. The time showed the kids what time it is, Miguel was forgettable as was Ushers old performance which once was enough that could have been on the cutting room floor.

to me it seemed like the Foo Fighters were playing the chorus to Darling Nikki "wrong". It didn't sound like the original but they did the verses exactly like the original so that seemed odd. It also seemed out of time but maybe cuz I was expecting the syncopated guitar power chords that they chose not to do which again was odd.

Just started here but the show started out well with the first two numbers. No pretentions or trying to copy Prince; HER, Gary Clark Jr. and Miguel did fine.

I need to get this off my chest. St Vincent is a mediocre guitarist and performer. If there was a time to show up and show out, this was it. Her rhythm guitar solo was stilted and repetitive. And her guitar solo at the end consisted of one squealing note. And she could barely dance in rhythm with the rest of the band and her soft, whispery vocals were all wrong for the song. H.E.R. is a better guitarist.

Foo Fighters killed it on Darling Nikki. Also great were Gary Clark Jr. on The Cross and Mavis & The Rev on Purple Rain.

So far, Beck is the best performance. I almost felt like I was listening to Prince himself. Not in vocals, but in the energy he was giving. He picked the perfect song for him.

Gary Clark Jr gave a good performance, but his blues vocal and guitar over Prince's arrangement didn't work. The Cross requires a soaring gospel vocal and deafening rock guitar solo. Prince's muscial versality will trip up a lot of musicians.

I might be one of the biggest STV fans here but I have to agree that her lead work has been sloppy in the last few years. The press has hyped her up as some kind of virtuoso "guitar hero" when her strengths really lie in inventive rhythm parts and hook-y lead lines. She's a fantastic songwriter and has a unique visual aesthetic, without a doubt, but she really could afford to practice soloing if she wants to lean into that image.

Like I said earlier, it would have helped immensely if she had played a looser arrangement with her own touring band, and made it her own. Listen to "Digital Witness", she can pull off weird funk. She just didn't fit in with the backing band's faithful rendition of the song.

I hear you, but she is Prince level genius compared to Chris Martin.

I realized Sheila, the Time, and the Revolution aren't much without Prince. The Time use the same arrangements and routines from '81 to '84. Sheila just copies everything Prince did. And the Revolution lacked energy and seemed lost without him. As bland as some of the younger artists were, at least, they tried to make his songs their own, they just lacked the musical ability to do it justice.

Beck, Foo Fighters, and EWF were the best of the night.

To be clear, I wasn't criticizing her songwriting abilities just her musicianship and performance. When she first came on the scene, I though her minimalist approach was her style. But now I realize she is just limited. in that moment, any accomplished guitarist wouldn't miss a chance to show off a little and she didn't. Check out MonoNeon's fantastic rhythm guitar on Let's Work. That's a talented guitarist showing off without losing the essense of the song.

Mononeon is a very talented player who has never written a song anyone outside of the guitar nerd community cares about. St Vincent's guitarring has its limits alright but they're way higher than most singer-songwriters, which is what she primarily is.

As for her performances, you are correct about the "stilted" thing, her last tour worked very well because she leaned into that.

I thought it was pretty good overall. I especially enjoyed Gary Clark Jr., H.E.R (her dull singing and lack of energy not so much but she's a talented guitarist), The Foo Fighters, Miguel, Usher and FKA Twigs, Morris and The Time(They're always fun to watch), Earth, Wind and Fire (Philip Bailey killed it. Beautiful falsetto) and Wendy was another highlight for me as well. Sooo talented. She has skills. Loved her. A little bit too much Sheila E. last night but she did pretty well overall. I never tire of seeing her perform "The Glamorous Life".

The "Purple Rain" performance made me tear up and miss Prince again terribly (well more than usual).

Nothing and no one will ever compare to Prince himself but I enjoyed the tribute.

Very entertaining show. I thought everyone did a great job! H.E.R. was fantastic and it was great seeing all the old timers, Morris, Sheila, etc.....Loved it! Many people at my work that are not even Prince fans watched it and they all said how much they enjoyed it. Lots of love out there for Prince.
