What is your take on the Cream maxi single? I admit I liked it when I first bought it. However, now I find the remixes kinda outdated unlike the timeless original. The Do Your Dance remix reminds me of early 1990s Madonna outtakes (not in a bad way - it just has that raw demo feel).

I like it. I hadn't heard a lot of Maxi singles like this. Took things in a different way, felt ecletic yet cohesive at the same time. Had a sense of adventure and fun. I like this and what he did with get off.

I still love it. Bit experimental with the instrumental parts. It still sounds funky fresh for the 90's to me . A highlight is the way Q In Doubt segues into Ethereal Mix

"Do Your Dance" is my favorite on there. I love how that particular remix along with "Get Some Solo" led to "My Name Is Prince".

I actually think that those Cream remixes were recorded after "My Name Is Prince" (but still during the same time period, shortly after.) On the Vault pictures that appeared in 2018, I've seen a 2" tape dating "Get Some Solo" to 29 September 1991. So it's very likely that the other remixes were either done on the same date or on the same week. But either way, they happened after "My Name Is Prince" was recorded. "Don't need no Reefer. Don't need Cocaine. Purple Music does the same to my brain."

I never played that fully, just as i never played fully the Get Off maxi. Not my cup of tea; it was the definitive end of the era of wonderful/interesting B-sides. Still was a die-hard fan at that time but this was another crack in the armor.

I recall it getting a lot of radio play in the UK and the video constantly being on MTV. .

Don't be silly, neither songs are overrated. Overplayed perhaps but that's not the fault of the songs. Both have genius production and performances, elevating them more than any amount of clever songwriting would. The Cream Maxi-CD is a good listen, lesser than his other maxi-cd song experiments but still worth getting. [Edited 2/28/20 10:31am]

[Edited 2/28/20 10:31am] opinion...opinions... i dont like either song...id honestly rather hear "Jughead" and "Daddy Pop", than "Cream" or "Kiss", which were definitely overplayed as well...."Cream" always reminded me of "Something To Talk About" by Bonnie Raitt, and i HATE that song

A lot of people hear T. Rex Get it On in Cream but to my ears he he was going for Addicted To Love with it in that it's a total "written-to-be-a-hit" basic rock'n'roll song with modern production to get it over the line - i'd forgive anyone who sees it as a bit cynical but it works imho

[Edited 2/28/20 11:57am] Yes, I've always heard T Rex's Get It On. Especially with the line 'you're filthy cute' he used in Cream and Get It On has 'you're dirty sweet'

IMHO most of the remixes are just filler. Not too much substance to them. Now the Gett Off remixes are another story....

Ethereal is where it's at. I still play that track to this day. A very atmospheric and memorable instrumental.

Like someone else said, to me this is just another step down the path away from interesting b-side material. I've never really been into remixes like this anyway except in some rare instances and these tracks (like Gett Off before it) don't really go anywhere to me. At least the NPG sessions produced a bunch of standalone songs that were cool. This is way to o mainstream marketing ploy to me.

Always been curious if the rumour was true about one of the prank calls at the end being Prince calling up his step-father
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Boring as hell. I don't even have it anymore. There used te be a time when his maxi singles were fantastic, a longer version of the track itself and the b side, which was often a great song in its own right. Not half an hour of variations of a song that wasn't that great to begin with. If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Gett Off EP is a Masterpiece! No other artist can do that. As for the Cream Ep couldnt really get into it. I will have a spin and see whether I like it or not.

I have never liked the song Cream, so I haven't heard the maxi single.
However, I loved the maxi singles that came out in the 80s!
