I’m just gonna say it: REARRANGE > LADY CAB DRIVER

I don’t hear Rearrange being on the album 1999, Prince sounds like he still comin’ out of the Controversy/‘Rude Boy’ shit. And i love it. Love the theme more, love the music more. It’s punk, it’s rock, it’s dance, it’s funky as shit — everything that made me fall in love with Prince (first song I loved was Controversy)

Lady Cab Driver is a genius track and I’m glad he put it on 1999, also not trying to speak downly of that track. It’s like a 8.5/10 track. But Rearrange is like a 11/10 and no one besides probably like 5 people including Prince knew of its existence for over 30 years. I just can’t wait for super deluxes of Dirty Mind and Controversy. That way, I’ll make a complete ‘Rude Boy’ playlist

Oh and P.S: No Call U (which is a completely different type of vibe) is not getting the love it deserves. I love it more than Delirious. Hopefully the estate releases the other vocal take (in the bootleg its 90% different lead vocal)

i'm not convinced hmph! to me, it doesn't get much better than 'lady cab driver'.

'rearrange' is cool and all and it's a great song i'd never even heard of before,
which i'm enjoying the heck out of.

but although it's a prototype for it, it is no lady cab driver smile

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

i dont know whats wrong with me.. but i can't get into Rearrange... at least not yet..

i can't figure out why b/c i know a lot of people really love it...

but i feel the same way about New Power Generation vs. Bold Generation...

Man.. Bold Generation is remarkable!

It has a sinister feel to it and while I love NPG, it seems a lot more precise & polished rather than raw & cool.

anyway, just another 2 cents in the fountain

Nah I feel you. I think it's alright and I'm certainly glad I have it. But I don't hear whatever it is that other people are hearing to make them go bonkers. I don't even find the solo that memorable - nothing like the solo on, say, 7779311 from the same era and carrying the same intensity.

I can’t believe it, but I agree. “Rearrange” is an inferno from start to finish, and I can’t get enough of it. 1999 is perfect as is, but I have to agree that “Rearrange” does more for me than “Lady Cab Driver”, somehow!

I'm kinda looking at Vault Tracks 1 & 2 as seperate, individual albums. Rearrange is a bloody great tune but I can't compare it to LCD.

Bold Generation however..
In my opinion Bold Generation sounds much better than New Power Generation. It's stripped back production wise and the piano is just.. oh lawd. Funky as heck!
NPG doesnt lack the funk, I think it is just the production/engineering/mixing that I'm not liking. But, would have I even known it without hearing this version? Probably not..

I also really love the first version of Irresistable Bitch. Both versions & the live version are so distinct that I can enjoy each one for what they're worth. I don't think I favor one version over the other in this case unlike Posessed. This version is killer. Don't really like the version on PR Deluxe but, my opinion might change over time. Again, I think I really dig the stripped down, rocking vibe over the 80's pop sound which is funny considering I love those flavors. I guess some songs benifet from it and others don't.

I love Rearrange but Lady Cab Driver is an absolutely brilliant top shelf track, Prince was firing on all cylinders on it.

For the past few weeks I have been playing rearrange nonstop. I LOVE IT. I dance to it. I yell at it because it is sooooo unbelievably. I'm not comparing it to LCD because it was clearly part of the process. To me it has a different energy and it still feels unfinished from the perspective of I detect a bit "too much" of Dirty Mind and Controversy on it.

Listen to the latest Peach And Black Podcast, 1999 Super Deluxe Part 2.

They mash-up Rearrange and Dance 4 Me, and it works amazingly well!

To me, it's just out of this world that he sat on Bold Generation for so long. I haven't listened to a Prince song this obsessively in years (probably since the PR Deluxe with Electric Intercourse and We Can Fuck). It's so far ahead of its time, but also so referential that I can't even. I just can't. Even.

.

To think he was doing stuff like this at the time is just crazy. It's like when I first learned The Question of U was from 1985. Like, wtf. How did he just sit on this shit forever. Why wasn't Question of U on Sign o the Times? Why wasn't Bold Generation on..... who knows what. Purple Rain? Parade? IDK. Wow.

Someone on a YouTube comment pointed out the irony that on Graffiti Bridge, Prince sings about "your old fashioned thoughts, your old ideas" when Can't Stop This Feeling I Got, New Power Generation, We Can Funk and Tick Tick Bang (the last two not on this release) are all his own OLD ideas!

I love both but if I had to choose one...arg its tough but yea I'd go with Rearrange. After listening to the 1999 podcasts I thought I heard this was one of the earlier recordings for 1999. I wonder if he recorded this as a response to the Rolling Stones tour fiasco. Seems to make sense when you listen to the lyrics.

LCD is perfection. As great as Rearrange is, it doesn't vibe with the feel of the album, imo. Almost too rockin' with the peristent guitar. Would have made a great b-side, though.

I agree that "Lady Cab Driver" is more suited to 1999. "Rearrange" still carries some of that punkish Controversy vibe. That said, I've gone head over heels for "Rearrange" moreso than I have for LCD.

Not sure it's better, but I can say Rearrange and Vagina are the strongest tracks on the set.

To me they sound very similar like rearrange musically he used a lot of ideas from that on lady cab driver. If you listen it’s obvious, the groove is similar and also a lot of the guitar bits.

To me, Rearrange is the missing middle between Sexuality and Lady Cab Driver.

Much as I love all 3 tracks, I think Rearrange is overall stronger than Lady Cab Driver, but Lady Cab Driver better suited the sequencing on 1999.

This thread... lol. I love "Rearrange" and have played it over and over. It's amazing. But "Lady Cab Driver" is one of the best ever Prince songs, certainly of the pre-Purple Rain era. Good lord.

On the other hand, it is mind boggling how much better, more inventive, and just more fun "Bold Generation" is than "NPG".
