Too early to ask about the sales for 1999 super deluxe?

Do we know any preliminary numbers as of yet?

Yes of course it's too early. I bought it and that's all that matters to me. It's hard to get hold of apparently though now. So yeah..whatever.

It's not in the top 20 of Hits Daily Doubles' early projections, so it's selling fewer than 17k.

Is there still a rule that every disc seperately counts? So a double album woukd count for 2?

That applies to certification (gold, platinum, etc) but doesn't apply to the weekly sales total.

When it is that time, I want the head-to-head with Originals sales. It's pretty clear the Estate was trying out two different approaches--one a simple straightforward comp geared at general consumers, the other an intensive box geared at the more dedicated superfans who want all the excess.

I mean they didn't even try to reach the general audience with their in-store stock or lack thereof... anyway I'd imagine the inflated price point would factor in... and I also really don't even know if they still count it like the old days, we count this as a Quintuple-Record or what? Does the DVD get counted too?

In the UK midweek charts 1999 was no26 in the Album chart. Final chart will be issued today but suspect it will drop from this midweek position as sales are likely to be front loaded.

That's because most stores only got a few in stock.

When I called around to brick-and-mortar stores trying to find a copy (after Amazon told me I'd need to wait two weeks) I l found that most of the major retailers recieved zero copies, and the few that did get copies only got two or three tops...

...which actually tells you something. The record company and/or the retailers must not be projecting it to sell well, otherwise they would have shipped/stocked more.

Its possible it would compete with Originals since Originals sold (a very respectable) ~65k or so. But it might take a while longer than Originals did sheerly due to availability.

The Rolling Stone chart (which uses different methodolgy and sources, but is typically pretty close to Billboard) has it at #20 this week: https://www.rollingstone....ts/albums/

Just curious...why is WB not promoting with a song or video?

The whole set is available on streaming services - what would be the point of a single now?

A video could well be coming (Holly Rock was released well after Originals), but archival releases aren't generally promoted in the same way as new albums (and sales expectations are very different).

I understand, but most archival releases do not have the wealth of new material.

But again, it's all available on streaming. It's not like commercial radio is going to jump on any of these tracks, so why bother with a single?

HDD reports just over 16,000 (14,570 pure album sales). If the majority of those are for the Super Deluxe it isn't a flop but I can't imagine these numbers are thrilling anyone. My only concern is any impact on future projects. What happened to all the Prince fans??

I think the first-week sales would have been higher if this set had been more widely available. Many fans had problems trying to find a copy.

.

There really haven't been that many hardcore fans in a long time. He didn't sell many records for the last 10-15 years or so. His concerts always sold out, but obviously only a small of those were hardcore fans who would want something like 1999 Deluxe. Most people just care about the hits and the live performances, perhaps.

Almost 15k of $55/$100 sets?

That's amazing. It's over $1 MILLION in sales from only one week only US.

SDEs must be both a dream and a nightmare for Prince fans. On the one hand, it comes with oodles of new music. On the other hand, Prince hasn't sold well in 15 years, SDE packages that are a couple hundred dollars aren't platinum sellers in the first week, and the music industry hardly sells physical copies not tied to a concert ticket at all.

The release is doing pretty well and we are in no danger of them slowing down.

That's IF all 15k were the Super Deluxe. There were two other configurations. The price of the SD is a steal for what you get! A FANTASTIC RELEASE.

If we want more of these we need to buy the damn thing.

Right. The estate is pretty happy I am sure. People need to chillax.

Pretty easy to sell out when you only have three in stock.

Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Before Holly Rock, there was a music video for Manic Monday.
So there is clearly a lack of promotion for 1999 deluxe.

Lol I don't know why, but the two previous topics about Originals sales were successively locked for me, so I gave up posting sales.
