Would a redone Purple Rain Super Deluxe Ed be warmly received by fans or seen as double dipping?

Personslly, I was more than happy with the Purple Rain special edition but now that we’ve been spoiled by what they’ve done with 1999, I feel retrospectively disappointed with Purple Rain and want a reissue in a few years.

So who here would welcome a pocket killer like that in a few years?
What should be added to it?

I'd be happy to buy it but not before we see SDE's of Parade, SOTT, and ATWIAD...

Double dipping. It would have to be an Extra Deluxe exclusive on Tidal or a youtube upload, and I'm not sure that justifies the cost for them.

This is really the first remastering they did without Prince having involvement, so sadly that might be why it's more of a success. They also heard the feedback.

Purple Rain, a lot's been said about the compression/mix, but it also sounds like he was just in love with finding new sounds that were hidden/married in the mixes before, probably because he was tired of hearing the songs the same way all this time, and he knew the secrets baked in. They sound like alternate versions or even demos now. It's also the second time he did something intrussive with the compression, so I think we have to face it that it's meant to be an element of that record, and making it too dynamic with a better mix would border on unethical.

I don't think the birthday show or Syracuse show is enough either, and the materials on Originals that people wanted bundled already got released.

So it would depend what's in the vault. I think they're more likely to do an extensive unreleased Revolution release, which is again, what people want.

It’s a tough one because the additional content would be a tough sell as added value if having to fork out $100 again for mostly what we already have but if they do similar 1999 treatments to ATWIAD, Parade and SOTT as I really hope they do, the combination of my OCD and Purple Rain’s importance will make me unhappy at my CD shelf.

Maybe they should wait until the 50th anniversary. Then, if I’m still taking up oxygen, the double dipping factor will be more palatable.

Yes definitely.

I'm sure they could fill another disc of vault tracks.

If the packaging and booklet are as good as 1999...

If there is a whole 2nd disc of vault tracks...

If the 1st Ave show is included on DVD...

If they throw another unheard live show on CD...
If they do a better remaster...

If they include tracks from the movie from associated artists...
And include all the material available in the previous release.

6CD/2DVD

Then hell yes I'll buy it again. Bring it on!!!

after ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT & Lovesexy. wink

All that, as well as the solo piano version of Father’s song (which I truly missed from the Deluxe edition)

Isn't it inevitable? Don't they have to revisit it? It's imcomplete, we didn't get any of the unreleased original(extended) versions except Computer Blue.

1. Purple Rain and b-sides

2. Purple Rain uncut - extended tracks version

3. Vault tracks

4. Vault tracks

5. Live at 1st Avenue 8/83

6. Live at 1st Avenue 6/84

7. Live at 1st Avenue 8/84

8. DVD - Live at 1st Avenue Compilation

retail $499 vinyl

So tired of, over and done with Purple Rain. Hard pass.

Get busy compiling a live box set with aftershows, videos and maybe a bonus vault disc.

I'd be happy, but at this point it would draw too much flack. I reckon wait for another anniversary to come around, or better still as a limited time "underground" download from the estate right now of all the purple rain sessions and THEN take another bight of the Purple Pie on an anniversary with a physical release razz

Aftershows would be a tough sell beyond the hardcore fans so I wonder how they'll handle that. Better copies of circulating shows isn't going to do it when the improved quality still isn't mind blowing.

Purple deluxe was like 20 bucks ... not a great loss to buy it again .. plus they will have access to better quality versions of the same songs plus more vault material ... bring it on

yeahthat I'd be highly pissed, though, if they added the disc of edits again.

.

Indeed.

.

1999 Super Deluxe has proved that there is room for improvement when it comes to the Purple Rain package. I would love to add a further expanded Purple Rain set with improved mastering to my collection in the future. Right now however, it isn't really a priority for me.
.
Like many fans, what I'm aching for most is a vastly expansive release of Prince's 1986 recordings. Call it what you will, Dream Factory / Camille / Crystal Ball / Sign O' The Times. All that great stuff. Any sets that are released after that I'll still happily buy, but I've been waiting for decades to get my hands of clear quality version of some of those songs. I'm really getting restless over here.

I would say YES! if it included:

1) A full new Purple Rain Remaster

2) All the newer 'Vault' tracks and B-Sides from the first Deluxe vesion

3) Purple Rain: Live at 1st Avenue '83

4) More Purple Rain Era 'Vault' Tracks like:

- Backwards Woman

- I'm So Confused

- Money

- Most Likely 2

- Electrocution

- Wednesday (Jill Jones Vocal)

- I Am Five

5) A Remaster of Appolonia 6

6) A Remaster of The Time's Ice Cream Castles

7) A remaster of Modernaire

8) Purple Rain Live: Feb 18th, '85 The Forum, LA, CA

9) A DVD of another full Purple Rain concert

Unless they allowed those of use dummies who bought Purple Rain Deluxe to return it, and have the full retail value go towards the purchase of the "New Super Deluxe Purple Rain (And We Mean It This Time)", it's double dipping.

Why is it so difficult to upload an avatar?

I think time is their friend on this one. Yeah, they can go back to Purple Rain - but it needs to wait awhile. Give it five years (2024) and release a 40th Anniversary Edition with more and better unreleased tracks, the 1983 First Avenue benefit and the 1984 birthday show.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
