Did You Guys See Questlove’s Post About The “1999” Re-Release? LordT I’ll be so glad to see more Prince news without this guy piping in anymore. The more he speaks, the harder I find it to like him.

I avoid anything and everything about him, he's too damn snobby and "privileged" and his opinions and reviews about Prince and his music don't impress me at all. Thoroughly unlikeable person for the most part. [Edited 11/30/19 9:30am] Welcome to "the org", Mumio…they can have you, but I'll have your love in the end

I don't see this as a reason to hate a dude, it's actually a common attitude among certain groups of collectors (of any artist). What cracks me up, is that he thinks his privilege allowed him to hear this stuff. Yea, maybe for a track or two, but most of this stuff had been available on the trading circuit for years and, subsequently, for anyone who ever stumbled upon file-sharing.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Nothing reprehensible about his comment. When you pay extra for bootlegs that aren't widely circulating you're of course taking the risk that one day those tracks will get leaked by someone, or as in this case, get released officially. So, you're really just paying for getting to hear them before most others.

i see where he is coming from. But he is kind of a jerk about it. I liked having most of these to listen to... and people have asked "what is this?" and I could tell them it is unreleased... and they would go oh wow... but with each release I have fewer unreleased songs... but that is the deal I made. It’s not so much hating on him. He’s extremely snobby about it. Not to mention he keeps reiterating about things he has that we don’t. Also this annoying ass notion that prince didn’t do anything worthwhile post 1988. It’s sickening. It’s the holier than thou attitude TrivialPursuit said:

Sorry but he lost me when he started outright saying his status should've entitled him to hearing music the rest of us didn't have access to. That kind of arrogance is an ugly part of the human condition that is a quick turn off. Let's not pretend Quest has done a single thing for the benefit of the prince fan community. Well, except for inspiring the Moneyapolis mix of Undisputed I guess.

I don’t know, man. I admire the reverence he dedicates to other living legends ala Questlove Supreme podcast, but he has always rubbed me the wrong way whenever he talked about Prince in general or how he teased fans non stop about music they’ll never get to hear in the past in specific. No worries, we finally get a glimpse of hope via this new release,,and what does he finally say? He’s conflicted that we got to hear it after he dedicated his privilege/fame to get what we haven’t what an obnoxious & cliquish thing to say, P’s music was not made solely for him to enjoy. You’re not gonna share those multiple outtakes of “Do Me Baby”? Brilliant! Shut the fuck up & enjoy it in silence. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t stop rolling my eyes whenever he mentions Prince’ name.
And this is coming from somebody who wants to like him. [Edited 11/30/19 11:53am]

Awwwww...poor Questlove. He thought merely having access to someone else’s artistic achievement made him special. With every release from the Prince estate, he’s less special and more like the great unwashed. What a tragedy for him. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I tried to like this guy. I want to because i understand loving music like a religion. Quest has amazing musical knowledge but everything I read from his mouth comes off ultra elitist and talking down. His latest tweet is so damn tonedeaf. I appreciate the thoughts about wondering about Prince intention and also about the hiss in the old versions. That was fine but calling out using his fame to gain access and then being upset sounds very low EQ. He brags about Wally, and now being able to play songs so people don’t ask him about where he got it and what it is. Can’t imagine hitting it off with this dude if we met. Music is the best...

Exactly. I fail to discern how he's more of an 'authority' than anyone else here, particularly given his strong bias towards material no later than 1988.

I do not know what this is...however... there was an interview with the guy who filmed it (the concert and the story elements) and he said that Prince bought back the concert film back but not the story parts... so how did this "sauron" get it? (and isn't that a lord of the rings thing?) [Edited 11/30/19 16:01pm] "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

To be fair though, he did play a fairly integral role in one of the best R&B/funk albums since Prince’s heyday (D’Angelo’s Voodoo).

Questlove's post made me lose what little respect I had for him. He's an entitled jerk. The worst part of his post for me was when he claimed Prince had run out of ideas in 1990. https://www.youtube.com/@PurpleKnightsPodcast

with all the problems going on in the world we should really care about Questlove not being the only one hearing some Prince songs..

totally blown up out of all proportion by some nut jobs! AND many missed the point he makes about the realisation that his /our hero isn't coming back.
Anyone who follows his social media knows that he phrases things differently.

Hey, the artistic achievements of Prince and our access to them, made all of us feel special. It's part of what made P so great. His songs, both live and studio, touched us and made our lives better. Maybe we all didn't receive or process that feeling the same way, but as an idea standing on its own, it lives.

Anyone who follows his social media knows that he phrases things differently. I don't have an issue with the realization, I don’t even have an issue with the post-90s output, it’s just opinion. I did have an issue with the “ya’lls” comment, it tells me he’s disgruntled he’s no longer gonna keep the humble brag charade and nobody is gonna brown nose him in the comments section to hear those “outtakes” anymore. Face it, the guy is an elitist douche, this remark didn’t really come as a left-field.
