Purple Music is sublime.
Every version of Possessed is amazing. This one’s brilliant.
Amazing collection.

I get what everyone’s saying about the sound. I don’t think it’s reverb but something is cold and a bit metallic to me. But I’m just stoked to have these in this quality on an official release!

Am I the only one whose "I can't Stop This Feeling" initial screams seem lower than the singer voice and who hears a Moonbeam Levels's drum sound too close to the rest?

Possessed (1982 Version)
What an absolute treat to finally have this is great quality! It's already been discussed to death due to its prevelance on bootlegs, but I will always regard this as the superior version of the song. This really should have been the lead single.

Delirious (Full Length)
I've always prefered this version, but I don't really think it was essential enough to justify a place on here, esspecially when there are alternate version of other album tracks that would have been much more interesting to hear. I would have been happy with the bootleg we already have in steller quality.

Purple Music
I've never been a huge fan of the song, although that's not to say I don't like it. Hearing it in this quality is certainly nice - I'm rather surprised by the mono drum track, as the bootleg doesn't sound that way (but it's probably been through several thousand filters).

Yah, You Know
The 86 version definitely has more energy with Eric's horns overdubbed, but this is certainly an interesting listen - especially the double-tracked vocal. I'm suspecting this is a new mix.

Moonbeam Levels (2019 Remaster)
Finally a definitive master of the track. It's obviously not a remix, so it's interesting that the outro has been cut off most bootlegs/ 4Ever.

No Call U
Another rockabilly song - and probably the worst of the batch. It's not bad, but it drags on way too much and is repetitive.

Can’t Stop This Feeling I Got
I'm really digging this version! It sounds like a gateway between Controversy and 1999.

Do Yourself A Favor
This is one I never really paid attention to on the bootlegs. It has a real early-80s City Pop vibe for me. It's a very enjoyable four minute song that goes for nine.

Don’t Let Him Fool Ya
This has always been a favourite. The quality it a bit strange though - it's increadibly boomy and sounds cassette-sourced.

Teacher, Teacher
I've always considered this a throwaway track. This version doesn't change that.

Lady Cab Driver / I Wanna Be Your Lover / Little Red Corvette (Tour Demo)
It's certainly an interesting peice. At points, his background vocals seem to perfectly match that of his band at the time!

Nice review and have to say I agree with most of your thoughts. This set was not as good as CD3 but the ones that stood out for me were:

Purple Music (already heard many times in boots but quality seemed much better and enjoyed even more when I put this on the headphones..you can get the added layers which I never picked up on before)

Moonbeam Levels (awesome to get the full track with ending...makes me wonder if it continues?)

Do Yourself a Favor (this was always one of my fav boots and nice to get a clean copy....i actually like the ending)

Teacher, Teacher (I never was a fan of this when released on bootlegs but I really liked this version...most would probably disagree but I think its much better than the later release).

I never could hear what was different between the two bootleg versions of Purple Music so for me this released version is THE ultimate version and the bootleg versions can be deleted. smile It's got the "time for your morning bath, Sir" lines, so I'm happy. Prince's embarrased "oh no, I don't want to play anymore" amuses me endlessly. lol

I do like the two versions of Possessed that have been released, but IMO, by far, the best version is live from Syracuse '85. That's a blow-the-damn-roof-off performance. I watched that one again yesterday because it had been a while. Ended up watching it 3 times.

This is a top 5 Prince album if released as is. Everything is a big winner on this disc, and it includes some of his all time great songs in “Moonbeam Levels”, “Purple Music” and “Possessed”, which is far better in this incarnation than any other, IMO. “Do Yourself a Favor”, “Yah, You Know”, “No Call U” would more than hold their own on any Prince album, too. And the extended “Delirious” is excellent!

Love hearing these early versions of “Can’t Stop This Feeling I Got”, and especially “Teacher, Teacher”. I’m in absolute heaven.

You're not the only one. Those harmonies are a crucial part of the hook of the song and they've buried them to almost inaudible levels. Annoying.

I have no idea how this 2nd disc of vault tracks seems to have so much less interest than the first disc. If someone told us 5 years years ago that we'd get a CD of unreleased material containing Possessed, Purple Music, Moonbeam Levels, a 1982 recording of Can't Stop This Feeling I Got, Do Yourself A Favor, and a studio demo recorded for band reference that mixes Lady Cab Driver, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Head, and Little Red Corvette, we'd have all peed ourselves.

Can anyone help here - the version of Yah You Know is obviously the '82 version but some one mentioned the '86 version with overdubs (sax etc).

I assume this version is out there somewhere. Can anyone tell me (without posting links of course....) which bootleg the best version of the '86 one is on?

Many thanks.

My thoughts...

01 Possessed (1982 Version)
Decent, but not as good as the versions on PR Vault or PR tour video

02 Delirious (Full Length)
Not one of my favorites on 1999, so a longer version doesn't excite me.

03 Purple Music
This is great. Song is a little repetitive of course, but there are just enough quirks to keep me interested all the way through. I'm really surprised Prince didn't release this at the time, at least as a b-side.

04 Yah, You Know
Pretty cool song. It took me awhile to get into it. The story on the 1999 podcasts by The Current got me into it.

05 Moonbeam Levels (2019 Remaster)
Very good song, but a bit redundant to have it on 2 posthumous releases.

06 No Call U
It's good, very good even, but it doesn't really grab me.

07 Can’t Stop This Feeling I Got
I want to like this more, but I find it to be just ok.

08 Do Yourself A Favor
Awesome

09 Don’t Let Him Fool Ya
Decent little tune

10 Teacher, Teacher
Ok, but the tone of the music doesn't fit well with the lyrics.

11 Lady Cab Driver / I Wanna Be Your Lover / Little Red Corvette (Tour Demo)
Another great one

Overall
It's very good. I just prefer the Vault pt 1.

Huh? Why doesn't it?

It's just a chill little alt rock track from the perspective of the Lolita character. Seems fitting to me.

Music just seems a little too upbeat for such a serious subject. Interesting that you say Lolita; I figured the student was a male, but maybe not.

I do think the Lolita character in the song is male, but idk what to call male versions of a Lolita. Lolito? lol.

I think, especially with the work W&L did to it, the song is intended to have the light-hearted vibe to it despite the nature of the subject matter. It's entirely possible that the character isn't underage and "teacher" (and the related terminology) is used in a tongue in cheek sort of way.

But look at songs like Sister or Ronnie Talk 2 Russia. He did a lot of upbeat songs about serious subjects.
