great album, however not impressed with the remaster at all. 'bold generation' sourced from tape sounds better than almost every track on this remaster.

I really disagree. So far I am loving it. It is particularly nice on Let's Pretend We're Married where Prince's harmony vocals really pop out and on DMSR where the individual guitars can be heard distinctly.

Has anyone actually listened to this in full yet?

I'm going through it now and DMSR sounds different with certain keyboard bits added and missing.

And the spoken words in AUTOMATIC fade in and out to the point that you cant hear some of what he's saying!!! eek

I agree it's really loud and clipped 9dr compared to previous editions of 14d, extremely disappointed, the life sucked out of it.

I was noticing earlier today about Automatic. The talking section is panned left to right and back but I am not 100% sure if that didn't occur in the original. I did think the vocals were a tiny bit low.

As the leak shared with me is MP3, I'm waiting till I pick up the discs Friday to listen to disc 1 so I can do a comparison with the original CD.

I've just been comparing my original CD with the new CD and I'm really disappointed to say I do in fact prefer the original CD.

Yet again this suffers from everything being made loud so the music clashes with the vocal, what was once quiet is now loud - everything is much louder.

Some parts to the new remastering are good but overall I'll stick with my original CD.

cool

Based on the leak I suspect this remaster will be used in the same way as the Purple Rain remaster - fine for streaming on my phone/playlisting on Spotify, but stick to the original if I'm looking for high quality listening and, you know, dynamics.

.

Which "original" CD? The one missing a track, or the later "complete" edition which uses a different master IIRC.

I think it's safe to say no one is talking about the actual "original" CD that was missing D.M.S.R.

Obviously they're talking about the 2nd edition that includes the whole album.

I'm sure anybody that would buy this set, already upgraded from the 10 track version to 11 track, IF they ever had the 10 track to begin with.

I have the 10 track version in my collection, didn't know any different and it was quite some time later when I realised there was a missing track. Also obvioulsy have the complete version too.

RIP sad

Sounded great when I listened today, particularly “D.M.S.R.” and “International Lover”.

Yep sounds fantastic. Not too loud and its sounds crystal clear. Drums and bass sound so much more satisfying

I never had the 10 track but I did learn the album via the cassette and am STILL not used to Free being after Automatic, lol.

It always (and still) strikes me about Little Red Corvette how the album version has vocals clipping all over the place, and the Special Dance Mix is much cleaner. How did this come about? It clearly is a different mix.

Still, I'm happy they didn't 're-mix' the album version for this remaster (it's only a remaster after all).

Duane Tudahl's book says they reconstructed the full version from the scraps of tape left around when the track was originally (physically) edited for the album, once that was done they made a copy and added overdubs and remixed it.

I think the remaster of the original album, rather than a remix is a missed opportunity.

I know the estate can't win ('Don't touch it!), but it's kind of sad that How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore take 2 in sonically in a different league that the remaster of the bside on disc 2.

In theory, they have the tapes and abilty to remix 1999 to the same sonic quality of HCUDCMA Take 2.

Songs like 1999, LRC, DMSR and Automatic would really benefit from a remix.

I know that opens up the debate, but when I listen to The Beatles remix of Let It Be (naked), its unbelievable how fresh it sounds, despite being 50 years old.

I largely agree but even amongst those who are ok with it there'll just be more debate on how they remixed it wrong.

lol You're right. I think they should just bring Peggy in as executive producer and say, here's a fresh mix, but you don't have to buy it.

Some instruments on D.M.S.R are reversed left/right compared to the old CD/HDtracks versions. Haven't noticed any difference on other tracks yet but haven't listened much yet.

Some tracks seem to be reversed !!! For example, the rythm guitar on the song 1999 was on the right channel, now it's on the left...

.

I've just began reading Duane Tudahl's book and this did surprise me.
.
According to Susan Rogers the traditional way Prince made a song would be to mix it, print one complete stereo mix onto a half inch tape, then print a second copy to edit for the LP version, and then possibly a third copy to edit down again should they be making a 7" single. Using this method the mix would always be the same as all versions would have all been printed in the same session from the same mix.
.
However, in the case of Little Red Corvette' the LP version was made by cutting the original 2" master tape in one session (August 1982). That tape then had to be reassembled for the 12" mixes in a seperate session (January 1983). As such the mixes ended up sounding different. There must have been some error during the August 1982 session.
.
Knowing Prince and his 'c'est la vie' attitude towards recording the distorted vocals probably didn't bother him, as was the case with 'The Ballad of Dorothy Parker' and 'If I Was Your Girlfriend'.

I am glad I was not the only one who noticed this! I was going crazy comparing it to figure out of I got a really bad rip of the HD Tracks version or something lol
