I loved Kid Creole & Coconuts as well, but The Sex of it was one of their weaker singles. Guess they took it out of respect.

I still think Prince should have kept that for himself. I freaking love his vocals on it.

August Darnell used a multi-cultural and multi-racial band, playing all kinds of cross over music and use a persona that must have made Prince smile. Lots of girls, zoot suits and the like. Check out Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band.

Yes, totally so. I was a fan before i even knew Prince. And when i did, I immediately put that link. That time i even said to myself that P knew where to get his inspiration...

It was my first, surprise, same day, announcement show out of many of Prince's(r.i.p.).We were packed against the stage like sardines. Of course I was up front against the stage. I remember Prince(r.i.p.) jammin "Mother Popcorn" as a soundcheck before the curtains lifted and we was peeking under the curtain watching Prince(r.i.p.) do scissor splits one after another. His energy & the band was non stop from start to finish. Prince(r.i.p) made being a fan exhilarating with one adventure after another. It was like being on a non stop musical rollercoaster.

He actually first played the song live (its debut) on September 5th, 1987 at Rupert's Nightclub in MN. I've heard the audio of that show, and it sounded great.

So, you got into the sold out show at the Reseda Country Club?? I would think it would have been mainly an "invite only" and VIP situation as the club capacity was only 1,000.

I love Prince's demo. It was a personal song, and his vocals just fit the lyrics so well.

August Darnell's run from about 1976 to 1983 or 4 is a pretty underappreciated golden age by a brilliant songwriter, frontman, musician, bandleader etc.

I prefer the earlier version of The Sex Of it though, even the later version with Prince's vocals ain't as good as that. I'm not mad on that turn of the decade, Graffiti Bridge-era production.

No “irking” here at all. I am far from the only person here who questions your “grandstanding” when it comes to Prince, and how you place yourself at every big event of his career. Anyhow, the double concert DVD from 1982 is excellent, so much energy. Plus I agree with the above comment that Prince probably used the Kid Creole influence in styling The Time.
