I'm not a fan of Katy Perry at all, but Ed is a talented singer/songwriter. I think Prince was alluding ot radio and how it's forced down our throats by playing the same damn song 15 times a day.

I seem to be the opposite of everyone else but I find Katy n her tunes to be delightful most of the time 😀. Thinking Out Loud is a nice tune but that Shape of You is God awful 🙏. Only 2 songs I know by him. Y'all just twisting Ps words and shit. He wasn't no hater 😂. For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Prince was such a hater "Climb in my fur."

If that was the case, surely it would have been Taylor Swift he would have named and shamed?

Katy Perry's song "Birthday" is based solely on the 1979 album and specifically "I wanna Be your Lover". That is my own, personal, opinion.

I'm with you. Firework is a classic pop tune as is most of Teenage Dream. I even liked recently Double Rainbow and Chained to the Rhythm. Sure's she's gotten a little stale now and I'm not a fan of her reality show hijinx but her music is solid pop. Sheeran bores me with the looping stuff, but he's surely a talented guy. There's far worse than Perry and Sheeran out there.

He's wrong about Ed Sheeran. He's a one man band, writes he own music and is 4 albums into a solid career. He's even built his own estate with a recoring studio. Sound Familiar? .

Does Katy Perry stil even have a music career??

I'm not an Ed Sheeran fan at all. He may be talented but his music is bland, insipid and unmoving. I look at him as a modern day Phil Collins but with none of the edge, fun or catchiness or really, any of the good qualities that Phil as an artist possessed. Katy Perry is to music what fast food is to gastronomy. She's made some catchy songs herself, songs far more vibrant than almost aything Ed has ever put out but she's still a processed pre-packaged LCD name that's received more attention than she is worth.

Yeah, it's called the music business. Which he played a part in. Not everyone in it can be a gifted genius. "Climb in my fur."

The fact that Ed wrote "Perfect" is enough for me to give him some kudos.

Prince and damn near everyone in the business wants the popularity Sheeran has. If they deny it, they're lying. And lest we forget, not every single Prince put out was a life affirming philosophical uplifting piece of magic. Not everyone can be Dylan. I'm sorry but his later diatribes about music and those who make it reeked of jeaolusy or at best, old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn steeze.

Wasn't it Prince who said, post-WB, that he loved record companies, and that they did their job "and it shows?" Wasn't it Prince who said sometimes he just wants to call up the folks at Warner and say "thank you, man?" Wasn't it Prince who negotiated another WB contract in 2014 to release a couple of albums, which in turn also gave him his catalog owership back, and also setup the aborted Purple Rain Deluxe release as well? Wasn't it Prince who made deals with Arista, Sony, etc for distribution of his albums because he knew that they could get his record out more than he could on his often-faltering 1800newFunk or NPGMC sites? Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Prince had the fame but threw it away.
What Prince really wanted was the ability to say "this is the new trend" and have everybody fall all over themselves. He was really hurt by his inability to get play from the corporate owned radio stations.
You can tell the same from one of his last interview. He was frustrated that everybody wanted to talk about the past when he wanted people to focus on Stare. He thought that was a stone cold classic and the lack of discussion was discouraging.

I guess one needs to know when to surrender to new trends/artists graciously.

3000 users on DailyMail say Prince is music industry judge, jury and executioner versus 17 comments here sayin Prince a hater. It's just the way it is.
And he was definetly trashing both their music specifically:

WB spoiled Prince, contorting themselves at various angles to appease him and gave him a chance to grow and develop as an artist and funded his rise to and eventual breakout as a star. Prince is to blame for why he couldn't keep up the momentum of his popularity.

News to all, pretty much anyone on the radio in those later years PRINCE didnt like their music or how radio worked etc...so you make think its Katy and Ed but Prince mentioned a lot more, Lady Ga Ga being one, "Different strokes" is where he used that comment. He also used his "real music, real musicians" on a lot of the artists and music out there, JT and even Beyonce who you think he loved and he did, but he told her she needed to learn to play. So Prince was old school and the people he liked were from that Old soul approach to music, I mean most of them NEVER would get radio play. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I don't know too much about Ed Sheeran. Not sure if I ever heard one of his songs.
Not really a fan of Katy Perry, but I find her far less annoying and less overexposed than another big, overhyped female artist that Prince actually shared a stage with

The sad thing is that this was just seems to have been a private note he wrote to himself, probably in a moment of frustration because there are times when you can't get away from whoever the popstar of the day is. They could have been anyone.

I love me some Katy Perry, some of her songs were solid pop gold! As far as Sheeran goes, I liked his A-Team song a lot, but that is about it... [Edited 11/1/19 8:50am] RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...
