I'm a little surprised at the various interpretations of the store clerk lol - not gay and not a woman clerk imho who knows maybe i have interpreted it wrong - i guess everyone naturally is free to interpret a track any way they wish * As already mentioned above the comment by Prince as the store clerk is to the effect of "..I get a bad back too .. every time my boyfriend leaves!" * To me there never was an ambiguity - imho this was clearly Prince as a 'Male' store owner/clerk taking the piss outa (joking around with) the Woman customer by cutting to the truth about why she wants the device by quickly imitating a woman saying "oh i get a bad back too... evertime my boyfriend leaves" * ps long live prince.org God Bless Prince

I think the boyfriend line is meant to be the natural reaction of his old woman character. If it was meant to be him he would have just spoken normally. Like in the song Movie Star - he uses his normal speaking voice. | |
