Give back the chains... (who is the female voice?!)

I think it would have to be Carmen Electra. It sounds like her to me. There is no credit at princevault. I know it could also be Mayte. I've wondered this for years.

Probably right. I'll try asking on Twitter and report if she answers.

Hi ea1313,

.

Have you ever seen the '3 Chains Of Gold' home video? Or heard any of the unused interludes for the prince album. The 'Give back the chains' line is part of the overall drama / story that is woven throughout the album. I can assure you that it's Mayte's line.

I have seen the movie and have the outtakes but it has been a long time since I revisited either! I hope they will put 3 Chains on a deluxe Love Symbol. Thanks for your answer. Unusual it isn't on princevault!

Surely Mayte. Have you seen the 3 Chains O' Gold VHS movie/video-collection?

Thanks! Yes, I have seen it, many times. I was way too young to be purchasing it too. My local record store overlooked the warning label. I still don't recall Mayte reciting those lines. A good excuse to revisit.

It's Mayte...obviously! Some of you need your ears cleaned! rdhull?!? Nothing like Rosie's voice!!!

Even logically you can work it out as Mayte is the main star of the film and song.

Actually, I have it on good authority that it's Sheena Easton doing a very convincing Chaka Khan impression. The reason she's not credited is because Warner Bros were worried that the public would find it a bit racist.

It's James Brown. He owed Prince for calling him up onstage with Michael Jackson.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

You guys are nuts!

Too much time on your hands and not enough intellect to go with it.

Freaker, calm down. We are joking/messing around. But true, we don’t have enough intellect and too much time.

So funny, because back in ‘83 I had this crazy dream that Prince knocked over a plastic post while trying to get off stage with MJ and JB razz biggrin

I'm going to go with Mayte. Funny, I've been listening to that song lately.

The album, sad to say,has not aged well.

The first time I heard it, I thought, "Wow! What a convoluted disappointment- but much better than D & P. "

It's definitely Mayte, because she's actually speaking the words in the ridiculous 3 Chains O' Gold video.

*

I wasn't listening during this period, but I actually really like the song 3 Chains O' Gold now. I love how it starts with the softer piano and lyirc and then builds into the big sound. Prince's version of Bohemian Rhapsody I guess smile I love the the first verse too:

*

If I don't think about the fact that she left me
If I don't see the pearls fall from the sky
If I don't hear the accusations of blasphemy
If I don't feel the tears in my eyes
This is the best day of my life
You say you'll call me and then and then you don't
I'll want to kiss you and then I won't
We both do nothing and call it love
Is this love?
Is this love?
