Purple Rain Ending

My favorite part of Purple Rain is the singing after the guitar solo. I suspect that most of us love that part of the song and those notes are forever in our hearts. I believe in my heart that he lives in those notes. Ironically, those were probably the last notes that he ever recorded in Atlanta.

I find myself ranking live versions of Purple Rain based on how long he sings that part. He often let the crowd sing it because he loved that part of the song so much that he wanted to hear the world sing it. But, the way he sings those notes are so beautiful that I often found myself disappointed if he only sang one bar or didn't bother to sing that part at all.

I'm not sure if he ever sang them more beautifully than the first time in August 1983. Do you have any favorite versions where he sings those notes? Syracuse 1985 and the American Music Awards 1985 also stand out. But, does anyone know of later performances where he nailed that part of the song? Thanks

If you mean the "Woo Hoo Hooo"s, then yeah, a special moment was in Frankfurt on the One Nite Alone Tour where he specifically stated that we wouldn't be gettin' our Purple Rain on.

.

Then, during the solo piano section,he started playing those chords and we, the crowd, immediately went on to sing the coda.

Prince got chocked up and exclaimed, "Aww, Germany!!! You haven't haven't forgotten me!!!"

.

He then played the entire song and we all "woo hoo hooo"ed altogether.

.

Nice smile

Beautiful analysis that warms the heart. I could be remembering this wrong, but occasionally (maybe because of the audience?) Prince would do this part during a particularly long intro to Purple Rain.

I prefer the Gold and zone Night alone tours simply because there was no Purple Rain. Amazing song, but I love those obscure shows with no hits.

I thought it was amazing to hear the crowd at the Super Bowl sing along to that part of the song. Let's be honest, those people weren't there for Prince, but during his performance he still had them eating out of his hand.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Whenever I hear him sing it it just fills my heart. It is the essence of what he is. So bitter, so sweet, so gentle, so powerful and so Prince. I'll have to check out that Frankfurt show. As far as later versions, I like the Brit Awards from 2006.

The Belgium show from 2015 when he began the song with the whoo hoo part was perhaps the most special. He spoke about the fans maintaining his legacy at Paisley Park. The best part is when he said that he ate light. I get so nostaligic and miss him so much. For some reason, I miss him most on Fridays.

True, they weren't there for Prince but I bet most of them left with a little piece of Prince in their souls! biggrin His performance is still named in the top three (if not the top spot) of half time shows.

Beautiful analysis and cool since I’m listening to that Atlanta recording right now. If I ever want to listen to Purple Rain, I play that version

Those notes he sings are sometimes the only thing that can describe my emotions and pain sometimes.

I also took the meaning of this song very simple; song about a friendship or relationship ending then ‘reaching out for something new’

Thank you for the memories, I've seen 13 concerts (1992 - 2014), this one was the best (with Days of Wild as absolute highlight).

a version that I fondly remember was when Prince played the Basement in Sydney. The crowd singing part of Purple Rain was, certainly spirited, and if not musically beautiful, certainly was enough to scare evil spirits back to hell. Sort of like the bagpipes on AC/DC a long way to the top lol
