Purple Rain deluxe From the Vault vs Originals

You can only have either the Vault disc from Purple Rain deluxe or Originals.

Which would you pick?

For me From the vault just edges it.

1. I have other versions of all of the originals.

We can fuck is a stone cold masterpiece.

Computer Blue Hallway Speech and Father's Song alone win for PR Deluxe. Add Roadhouse Garden and We Can Fuck? Electric Intercourse studio version?

Love And Sex, which I had never heard of, is awesome. I never really liked Wonderful Ass as much as others do, but still nice to have it!

PR Deluxe Vault for the win.

I'm listening Originals more than PRD.

I love the Originals progression, while the PRD has got some problems here and there: Love and Sex is "mashed" between a very long version of Dance Electric and a wonderful "monstre" like Computer Blue. Roadhouse Garden is artificially attached Our Destiny, and the last one, Our Destiny has got poor sounds on it (I hate the cymbals). The Velvet Kitty Cat and Katrina's Paper Dools moment is a bad choice for the progression, IMHO, the songs are too different from the contest as kind of music and as quality of composition.

Romeoblu

I love them both.

Pr deluxe has more individual big hitters. The Dance ELECTRIC, Computer Blue, Electric Intercourse, Love and Sex, Wonderful Ass, We Can Fuck, but Originals is more consistently great throughout.

A tough choice I would go for Pr deluxe due to the fact that the originals songs are all available elsewhere, albeit on the whole in inferior versions.

I finally purchased Originals. Some of these tracks make no sense ("Make Up", "Dear Michaelangelo") when they could have used the amazing Family and Jill Jones tracks. It could have been so much better with a better tracklist but I now consider it a worthwhile release. P&Mic '83 is too for a Prince fan. I think I prefer Originals to PR Deluxe but it's pretty even. Some gems, some throwaways.

If you listen to the Nick Bolas interview with Peach & Black Podcast, he implies that there are more volumes coming of "Originals". I forget the number of possible tracks that they had to choose from, but it was enough for several CDs of Originals.

Remember, Jay-Z had a big hand in selecting the song choices for Originals Volume 1. Love, Thy Will B Done was pretty much a demand, hence why it's on a disc of mostly early-mid 80s songs even though it's out of place.

Pretty sure the Tidal contract is now complete with Originals. I don't think you'll be seeing any more exclusive stuff going to Tidal.

The PR Deluxe disc feels like a slightly more coherent listen to me (presumably because the recordings were made in a shorter time span) and features more personal favourites, so I'd say that.

Well I hope the lukewarm sales of the first Originals doesn't discourage them. It shouldn't. There can't be much cost putting out collections like this. They will be priofitable even if hey only sell about 30k seach.

Releasing this tracks like this rather than tying them into an album era is smart in my opinion.

I'd hate to lose Prince's version of 'Holly Rock'... but I'm not giving up 'We Can Fuck' for nobody! The Vault for me.

"Originals" has reminded me of Prince's greatnes. I resisted buying it because I don't care for demos and/or muddy audio. Turns out the set isn't just a bunch of spartan demos. I was a raging diehard up until "Emancipation". Some great tracks but it was the first Prince album that had tracks that bored me. Back then I even liked "Judhead". Long story short. 80s Prince is godlike and most of "Originals" is from that magic 1979-1989 period.

I didn't get to contribute to the other thread so here's my rating/review

Sex Shooter 7.5

I'm actually glad its here because it's the only Appollonia song I could ever tolerate. So it's Prince singing? Still makes it unnecessary to bother with the other version again

Jungle Love 9.5

Just as good as The Time's version. I thought "what's the point?" but it's a joy to hear Prince do it

Manic Monday 6

First let down for me. Just an inferior take with not much more than a guide vocal. In this case the Bangles version is just strikingly better and makes this filler

Noon Rendezvous 7

Prince's performance is better than the song itself.

Make Up 2

They could have left this one in the vault thank you. It is tedious after the first 45 seconds

100 MPH 6.5

Would be a 9 if it didn't sound like a bootleg

You're My Love 8

Suprisingly good. Find myself singing it it often.

Holly Rock 7.5

Thought it was crap before I realized the video was an edit. Track comes alive in it's extended form

Baby You're A Trip 10

Simply Prince at his vocal peak and the song is quite good itself

The Glamorous Life 8

see "Jungle Love" comments

Gigolos Get Lonely Too 9.5

I forgot how great this song was. Amazing that he gave things like this away when he does them just as good if not better than the known versions

Love Thy Be Done 10

Holy friggin shitballs this is marvelous. I already knew it was.

Dear Michaelangelo 6.5

Prince-lite. Definitely something he properly gave away.

Wouldn't You Love To Love Me? 5

Sorry I'm a snob about audio quality. This is bootleg-grade

Nothing Compares 2 U

Sinead's version is one of the greatest songs of the past 30 years. This version is better than the live duet with Rosie and it's cool to have

Overall Grade: 8

There bettter be more volumes of this. Just way too many missing.

Tough one to call, but at least the vault CD uses mixes done at the time and not new mixes like most of the Originals release with too much reverb on the vocals which is atypical of the era(s) that the tracks come from.
