I asked Sony about this and they said at the moment they only have the go-ahead from the Estate to do reissues. This can stretch to things that were technically released but in very limited quantity such as "The Versace Experience" but as it stands, not to totally new compilations like WB did with "Originals" or things not released at all in any form.
I think it won't be too long before that changes because soon enough they'll have reissued everything. This year alone we've seen Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth, Rave Un2, Rave In, Emancipation, Chaos & Disorder and Versace. So that's a pretty hefty release schedule.
I don't know what's next but there's still TRC, 20TEN, Lotusflow3r, Crystal Ball that will hopefully all be in the 2020 schedule and then I imagine serious discussions will start about where they go from there.
I'd like to see some similar projects to Versace as well. Perhaps the NPG Sampler Tape or NYC Jam Of The Year/Face Down.
Looking at what Sony could possibly release, under their reissues contract, there is very little left!
However, for me the ultimate releases would be those post-Warners releases that were digital only, such as; Xpectation, N.E.W.S, The Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse.
One Nite Alone would be nice and 20Ten would be awesome, both would look great on large format vinyl.
I can't see the point of re-issuing The Vault Old Friends for Sale. And I'm sure all fans already have Cd and vinyl for The Rainbow Children.
So nothing really left regards albums.
Even thought Sony can't touch most WB material I desperately hope for Record Store Day 2020 someone re-issues on vinyl and CD the epic, Japanese exclusive, ''STRANGE TALES FROM THERAIN.''

The Sony Legacy contract is very specifically for post-Warners re-issues and nothing else.
Obviously that could change, but that would be a new contract.
This has paused the Warner's re-issues due to market saturation.

Third and final unboxing of the week - The Versace Experience! Feel free to check out the video here.
Thanks for a week of cool videos.
Have you listened to the Versace Experience CD?
I was wondering if the CD still has the same hiss as does the MC and digital release.
Oddly the bootleg versions are crystal clear yet the official version is so very very bad!
It's bizarre the official curator of the vault is failing at quality control.

When Sony says it can issue things that were technically released, does that mean physically released, or released period? In other words, could they finally release hard-copies of some of his internet-only releases, like the Chocoloate Invasion and the Slaughterhouse? Those were officially releases, just not in physical form.

Yes, post Warners.
Yes, Sony can re-issue only physically released CDs?
Or, yes, Sony can also reissue the internet-only CDs (e.g. The Chocolate Invasion)?

I'll buy C&D and maybe Emancipation... maybe (it's an album with select number of cherished songs and a lot of dross - I suppose it's perfect for online streaming and playlists, but not for vinyl).
Hopefully The Rainbow Children and The Undertaker are near the front of the line to receive this treatment. Hundalasiliah! |

Question: Does The Versace Experience come with a booklet of any kind or is it just a digipack case? I've pre-ordered Emancipation for a fairly reasonable £74 off Amazon.co.uk [Edited 9/8/19 15:15pm] 3121... Don't U Wanna Come? |

As much as I want to have Emancipation on vinyl for the sheer audacity of it all I can't really justify the price, and it was designed for CD anyway. I'll probably only pick up the Versace Experience CD out of these. |

I never listen to Emancipation in one sitting.
I kind view it as 3 separate albums, with disc 3 getting the most plays. |

Ridiculous.
The less discs available, the more the music is compressed to the grooves. Album quality then suffers. Incidentally, the vinyl for "C&D" is labeled wrong. "Zannalee" is on side A as it should be (to segue from "Right The Wrong") while Side B starts with "I Rock...". This misprint on the jacket may or may not make this edition all the more limited. I have now listened to the first 2 albums on vinyl.
They do sound better than the original CD's. There is by no means worlds of difference but details stand out more on the vinyl.
There were a few songs that really stood out as being improvements. Most notably was the Holy River and Saviour. I did a vinyl CD comparison for a few tracks and in each case the vinyl had more depth and instrument separation. [Edited 9/13/19 15:07pm]

I'm afraid that's not even an issue.... the ALBUM wasn't compressed to hell, the MASTERING was on the original CDs....
So saying that pressing it to vinyl - with a separate and specific mastering for vinyl - would make no difference, is simply not true.
I'm currently listening to the vinyl edition of Emancipation, and - like all the recent Sony reissues - it knocks the hell out of the original CD version. It's not brickwalled, there's far greater depth, warmth and clarity.
If I had my way, Warners would be banned from releasing any more Prince music. Give every album to Sony and let them reissue everything - they are FAR ahead of Warners at the moment in terms of audio quality.
Hopefully Warners' 1999 Deluxe will even things out, but anyway, right now I'm partying like it's 1996! |

Anyone experiencing Emancipation for their first time ever and it's on vinyl will think they have a worn dirty record when they get to My Computer. I forgot for a moment it had record noise included on the track. |

Listening to the vinyl now... sounds really good. Only downside is a few typos on the credits that aren't on the original artwork and some of the artwork is slightly pixelated but that's understandable... i'm a designer so i notice these things . Love the box and covers and inserts though, great boxset. [Edited 9/14/19 12:49pm] 3121... Don't U Wanna Come? |
