It's ALWAYS been VERY sad to me that Prince(r.i.p.) didn't live long enough to reap the benefits of ownership of his master recordings to which he fought for the majority of his short but fruitful life. sad

My greatest concern was that Prince would be locked into a brutal lawsuit with WB just as it appeared that he was winding down his recording career. He obtained his masters and he was writing a memoir. It seemed that he was preparing for a more relaxed phase in his life minus recording/touring. To have that hampered by a lawsuit with WB because that distribution deal didn’t reap any results would’ve been the saddest thing to me.

What makes U think it would have? Prince(r.i.p.) did seem at peace with the deal or he wouldn't have agreed to it. Besides his tweet it seems like he held the cards to it. He just wanted more leverage and control of it.

"That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when eye was doing the Purple Rain tour eye had a lot of people who eye knew eye'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."prince

Third possibility: WB wanted to make the PR reissue as big as the forthcoming 1999 deluxe editions. However, Prince kept stonewalling WB for more money. There was a tweet by Prince before he died explaining the delay from his perspective. He said that WB was not paying the proper licensing fees and there would be reissues galore once WB decided to divide the “pie” fairly.

Prince & WB were two years into their distribution deal and nothing was released besides the Prince/3rdEyeGirl releases and vinyl reissues. Once Prince died, WB had to put something out, albeit hastily, hence the PR remaster.

Fourth possibility: Prince only delivered the remaster of Purple Rain to WB and had no intention of doing a deluxe edition like they wanted. He talked about doing a new best of with them but only made it as far as selecting the artwork.

Prince's sudden death left WB scrambling to capitalize on the moment. So they hastily assembled things from the sources they had on hand. 4Ever using a lesser source for Moonbeam Levels and announcing TMBGITW in the press release. Purple Rain Deluxe having a number of quality issues and announcing that it would have two concerts included, before the estate decided to auction off First Ave 1983 to the highest bidder instead of letting Warner have it.

Now that all of the tapes are cataloged in Iron Mountain and most of the legalities have been figured out, WB doesn't have to scramble. They request materials, Howe finds said material and then they compile it into a retail release. Easy.

There's no giant third party demand for the Summit video or the Detroit soundboard like there was for the First Ave 83 show.

My speculation is that this 1999 Deluxe release is a stress test for the market. How quickly can they release material and how much can they get away with charging before it starts to have an adverse effect on the sales numbers? I think things are going to ramp up considerably for 2020.

This is it right here. And I wanna go on the record right now that I'll happily pay up for a new, proper remaster of Purple Rain.

My speculation is that 1999 Deluxe was always planned for Autumn 2019, as a follow-up to P&M83 (Fall 2018). But then Originals got inserted into the timeline to get rid of the pesky Tidal deal and Warners also wanted that one (maybe eyeing a series of such releases?). But then logistics threw a bit of a monkeywrench into the proceedings: Originals wasn't going to hit physical media until the end of June, and the Deluxe edition would come even a month later. So now 1999 Deluxe had to shift to a later date, but there wasn't that much room to move due to the end of year rush. Plus there was Sony/Legacy's release schedule.

.

So we had it wrong by assuming Originals replaced 1999 Deluxe: Originals seems to have been a surprise release and 1999 Deluxe ended up with a slightly later release date than expected.

.

Curious what next year will bring. Warners is losing a lot of its catalog by 2021, so next year is their last chance to do something with the non-soundtrack albums. I'm kinda hoping for an astonishing SOTT box, but the issue there is that some of those outtakes are on CB, and that one is Sony's. Parade Deluxe and an upgrade to Purple Rain isn't that urgent since Warners will keep those rights.
