Hope not. Prince's original vision for the record should be respected.
. Like the UK vinyl from back in the day? Or the first CD release that omitted a track? .
Release Vault track under a clearly marked Demos banner. I get that these type of "Deluxe" versions are the norm in an industry where actual artists are rare, and few if any have creative control over a re-release, but Prince Estate has more power than this. He was clear about not wanting his original vision diluted in this way.
. You're talking about the dude who did "1999 The New Master", an atrocious record. Stop it. You’re also talking about the dude who made one of the greatest, most innovative and important albums (1999) of all time. That being said, this release shud not be treated the same as the original. A huge part of the package must be tastefully aimed straight at the hardcore fanbase. And there is no reason that WB/Estate shouldn’t get this right. |

SO ???.....we will See in few days if this info/rumour is right or not?
. Yeah sure, they're going to release an album on THANKSGIVING. . Sheesh, that person couldn't even be arsed to link to their source, which is an amateurish video from "Prince's Friend" who obviously likes to believe utter nonsense. . (Seriously, what is it with this cottage industry of Prince vloggers who all are unable to produce watchable videos that get to the point? A point which often could be made in a single tweet -- yet they seem to need a five+ minute rambling video which makes less and less sense the longer they go on.) What would you know about Thanksgiving? You’re a million miles from America. |

"Delirious" and "Something In The Water" both have unreleased alternate versions but yeah...if this is true I hope it's 30 actual unreleased songs (or significantly different versions of released tunes) and not just a handful of unreleased tracks and 19 different studio outtakes of Little Red Corvette with slightly different mixes. |

this is all it says:
CONFIRMED! Following many rumours, we are thrilled to confirm that a Deluxe Reissue of 1999 will be the next release from WB. The issue is set to be very similar to the Purple Rain reissue and to contain both a Vinyl, a CD and DVD. We will post more information as soon as we are allowed #Prince #Prince4E |

. No they have not. They've posted a video full of conjecture which features the awesome logic that their extremely solid sources are telling them the album isn't happening so these sources must be confused. I'm with Bart. I don't argue with people about my opinions. Scram. I said what I said. |

Why was PR not of this calibre?
Why can they now deliver somwhat of an actual box set? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry. |

.
Two theories:
.
1) When WB claimed that this was the intended release that Prince had a hand in they were actually telling the truth. As such an expansive posthumous release wasn't on the table at the time. (I highly doubt this was the case, but maybe there is some truth to it).
.
2) Minimise risk. Being the first deluxe set, I guess they didn't want to go overboard to see how the public responded to it. The same reason why the vinyl release was a single record and not a multi LP box set. Hopefully they are pleased with how Prince's stuff is selling at the moment. |

Third possibility: WB wanted to make the PR reissue as big as the forthcoming 1999 deluxe editions. However, Prince kept stonewalling WB for more money. There was a tweet by Prince before he died explaining the delay from his perspective. He said that WB was not paying the proper licensing fees and there would be reissues galore once WB decided to divide the “pie” fairly.
Prince & WB were two years into their distribution deal and nothing was released besides the Prince/3rdEyeGirl releases and vinyl reissues. Once Prince died, WB had to put something out, albeit hastily, hence the PR remaster.

It's ALWAYS been VERY sad to me that Prince(r.i.p.) didn't live long enough to reap the benefits of ownership of his master recordings to which he fought for the majority of his short but fruitful life. My greatest concern was that Prince would be locked into a brutal lawsuit with WB just as it appeared that he was winding down his recording career. He obtained his masters and he was writing a memoir. It seemed that he was preparing for a more relaxed phase in his life minus recording/touring. To have that hampered by a lawsuit with WB because that distribution deal didn’t reap any results would’ve been the saddest thing to me.

Prince & WB were two years into their distribution deal and nothing was released besides the Prince/3rdEyeGirl releases and vinyl reissues. Once Prince died, WB had to put something out, albeit hastily, hence the PR remaster.
Fourth possibility: Prince only delivered the remaster of Purple Rain to WB and had no intention of doing a deluxe edition like they wanted. He talked about doing a new best of with them but only made it as far as selecting the artwork.
Prince's sudden death left WB scrambling to capitalize on the moment. So they hastily assembled things from the sources they had on hand. 4Ever using a lesser source for Moonbeam Levels and announcing TMBGITW in the press release. Purple Rain Deluxe having a number of quality issues and announcing that it would have two concerts included, before the estate decided to auction off First Ave 1983 to the highest bidder instead of letting Warner have it.
Now that all of the tapes are cataloged in Iron Mountain and most of the legalities have been figured out, WB doesn't have to scramble. They request materials, Howe finds said material and then they compile it into a retail release. Easy.
There's no giant third party demand for the Summit video or the Detroit soundboard like there was for the First Ave 83 show.
My speculation is that this 1999 Deluxe release is a stress test for the market. How quickly can they release material and how much can they get away with charging before it starts to have an adverse effect on the sales numbers? I think things are going to ramp up considerably for 2020. |
