Has anyone ready mentioned Taylor Hackford? Ray, I guess Leon Gast was mentioned When We Were Kings?

I blame it on the scope of the subject.

It's like he really would've put out great single subject docs on Armstrong, Benny Goodman or Duke Ellington if he chose to.

I thought it came out great but I've heard the same criticisms you made when it came out.

His "Country Music" is coming out next month, and given the scope of THAT subject, I'm almost certain the same issues will arise.

Unless they tweak their formula.

Of course we'll all be watching.

Scope or no scope, begin at the beginnng. Burns dropped the ball on the subject, despite his status and all the fanfare. Get better input from the actual source of jazz, or don't bother. I won't be running to his country music doc either. growl.

edit - I will watch it, lol. That Dolly footage looks great.

cool Still, Mr. PBS needs to leave Prince alone. Too pedantic, lacking the flair and instinct needed to make those giant social and musical leaps come alive.

Albert would be great for the 80's, but not sure about the 90's forward. Although, he would certainly know the right people to use as resources.

Looks like he hasn't directed anything since 1997...

How bout bring Ava back! If the estate is gonna start managing PP and Graceland LLC is out, just let Ava finish what she started. I was really looking forward to her doing it, especially after the massive success of "When They See Us" along with her success with

"Queen Sugar".

LATimes says it is creative differences with Netflix.

With Netflix or the Estate? Doesn’t Ava have a long term contract with Netflix?

This is a snippett from the 8/19 LA Times article:

She does note she’s no longer working on Netflix’s multipart Prince documentary, saying she had “creative differences” with the company after working for a year on the project. “It just didn’t work out,” she says. “There’s a lot of beautiful material there. I wish them well.”

It would be disappointing if it’s just a lazy talking heads documentary consisting if B-list celebrities talking about Prince.

The new director has been picked.

Apparently, working without self-publicity. It's a good choice and no, none of you guessed correctly.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Really picked or did someone just volunteer?

Like most endevours in Prince-land these days everyone working on something over there just seems to be some amateur that thinks he's/she's an expert who volunteered to "help".

Spike, not just because of his obvious love for Prince but also because he's made some of my favorite documentaries, i like his docus better than his films. Funny thing was, Spike used to talk shit about Prince when he was young, back when he was against pretty much everything and anything.

Can't think of anyone else offhand that I think could do Prince justice.

I agree with this 100%. yes crysball eye

Laytonian said it's a good choice which implies the person is known.

I will be happy with an org note!

Well, considering the shitty movies they make I wouldn't be surprised.
